I can't seem to find any equivalent active pickups for a J bass in the UK. If anyone knows of anything please let me know!
-
Thanks, the pickups I was looking at were from this link. As someone mentioned, it does show all the import duties etc: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EMG-JVX-Set-Active-Jazz-Bass-Guitar-Pickups-BLACK-NEW-AUTHORIZED-DEALER-/321558426882?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item4ade603502

Thanks for that. I guess it's just worth ordering the ones from Thomann then which should escape the charges?

Hi all, I have a '74 Fender Jazz bass which I love the look and feel of, but mostly do slap and have my eye on some EMG JVX active pickups. eBay (from the US) has them for £110 delivered to the UK. Thomann has them for £148 delivered to the UK. I can't seem to find anything about buying from the US and paying VAT and other costs. Would the £110 be the final price I pay or I would I be guarenteed to have to pay VAT at customs somewhere along the line? I think Royal Mail add a slice on too don't they? Thanks in advance.

Yep, they are a bit out of sync, but still can't quite get it! I have nearly got the jist, but there are some extra ghost notes and stuff so it's still not quiet right!

Ok. I have been playing bass for a while now and can pickup most stuff by ear, learning new techniques takes a while, but usually get there. Then I see these videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvP5qkSY16s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhtACpexx38 Both videos have a similar pattern. I can't work it out. I can't see any tutorials or slowed down versions. I can easily make out the notes but can't fathom out the pattern he uses. It's some kind of slapped harmonic I think. All I need is so kind of slow motion tutorial! I am desperate to learn this style. Any help or pointers appreciated!

Pickguard for my fender deluxe, impossible to find!
logicred replied to logicred's topic in Accessories and Misc
Thanks all. Cheers for the tip Mr Zed. I think I will go down that route. My Tort pickguard is no good to me so I could always sell it on or spray it mat black (which is the effect I want) and and protect it somehow. -
Having recently got hold of a 2005 USA Fender Jazz Deluxe 4 string bass I wish to replace the tort shell pickguard. I thought these would be ten a penny on ebay and on the internet. I can't find ANY in the UK! It's basically one of these for a 22 fret cutaway body '98 upwards. http://www.wdmusic.com/pickguard_jbad4_300.html Any UK suppliers????!!!! Thanks in advance.

This bass was given to me after being stored for years. I have been onto the Matsumoku forum and it's been identified as an early SB-600 model with a set neck so possibly quite rare? Anyway, the pickup has been replaced with a single coil and I need to get it back to original. Does anybody know about the pickups for these? I think they are MB-1 or something. I understand I can by new replacements from possibly here: http://www.rautiaguitars.net/aria-pro-ii.html. If anyone else has any info on these basses I would like to know thanks!

Hi all, I have a Rockingbetter 4003 Bass and have tried to restring it. I have purchased a set of GHS Bass boomers (long scale) and measured the fretboard to the bridge which is correctly 34". However, it has a long bridge on it and the strings enter it right at the edge of the bridge which means the part of the string where it tapers at the end is about 1cm from the nut thus the cotton part is actually on the fretboard! What am I missing here? I tried an old string from somewhere which was the same too. Am I supposed to get a different set for Rickenbacker style basses? Thanks

Hi all. Anyone know of somewhere in the UK where I can get a replacement MM Sterling RAY34CA pick guard? I am sure I read that they are not the same as normal stingrays.

Thanks for your replies. I think we need to hire a hall to test our current kit before doing a gig ;-) Some great advice.

Hi all. I am the bass player in a 5 piece funk band. We practice in a small square rehearsal studio with a large supplied PA beside the drums and the bass/guitar amp facing the drums (kind of in a circle). Sounds great and now ready to gig and this is where I have no idea what we do/need in terms of speaker layout/PA. Please help with the following SMALL GIGS - For smaller gigs (pubs/clubs etc) do we just use the PA for vocals only and then simply use our instrument amps as normal? - Would the PA then go behind the singers (x 2) so we don't need any monitors? - At what point do we require monitors for small gigs and what would we put through them? Thinking about it, it would surely be just the drummer who would need to hear vocals/bass/guitar through a single monitor as everyone else can hear the instruments? - In terms of monitoring levels, would we just have a dedicated person giving a hand signal to say what's too loud/quiet and then adjust accordingly - I assume we don't mic up the drums at all. LARGE GIGS - At what point do we all go through the PA, I assume for larger halls etc? - I guess we will always then require someone to man the desk to sort out levels? I fully appreciate that it's trial/error too and I won't know until we start to gig, but I need to know the basics for our first gig! Any help/pointers appreciated.

Thanks fella. I have in fact just managed to get a secondhand Zoom R24 for £200 which I think is similar to the R16 but more tracks and more phantom power etc (which I don't need but it was a steal at this price!). It is 100% what I need. Quality is great, easy to use, built in Mic's are fantastic. When finished playing live, just press a button and via USB all transferred straight into Reaper via WAV and I edit that way. Yes, the Zoom has a built in editor to mix down, but why bother when Reaper is so cheap and has infinite possiblities ;-) Very pleased with the result.

Ah ha, it appears that Alesis do a £100 USB FX model which gives a stereo mix, and a USB 2.0 FX model which is just over twice as much and this provides 8 separate outputs via USB which is what I need. Gets good reviews, but twice as much ;-( I read an old post somewhere that suggested that most people don't need the mixing element, just the recording element and can make do with outputting as 8 tracks to a memory card, so am now looking into this which sounds like an even better solution!
Cheapest.... an Alesis multimix 8 will get you 8 seperate ins to your lappy via USB - around £110 new.
Thanks. This device sounds perfect, but one of the latest posts in this thread says that it won't record as separate tracks via USB (at least the 4 input one won't). Just as a stereo mix?

Budget of around £130 to get things moving. Having played with track recording on a laptop I really like the idea of going the laptop + external device route to be honest.
-
Thanks all. That's good info ;-) I will take a look at some of those devices. I don't have firewire and have no PCMCIA slot. I appreciate what you said about live recording. I could probably do both in fact (record live, but then remove the vocals and mix them in later to get them perfect).

Hi all. I have taken a look through the forum, but am a bit confused. We are a 5 piece band (2 singers) and at rehersal I want to record us on a laptop each on a different track so can mix down later. Is there are mixing device that will take 5 inputs and output as USB to software so I can do this? My laptop is quite old and I am guessing that perhaps a beefy processor is needed? I want to purchase something S/H ideally. Even a 4 track version would probably suffice if the price was right and we would have the vocals on one channel. Also, we reherse once a week and during the rest of the week so I want us to make the best use of our time and start recording songs during the week (to get the best quality) by doing the following: 1. Insert the original MP3 cover track into Audacity (or whatever) as a new track 2. Play my bass line as a new track 3. Email the RAW bass line track and MP3 file to the other band members who do the same. 4. The end result is a 5 track RAW file which can then be mastered. Is this the normal way of doing things? Thanks for any pointers.
