2. It's on gumtree can't put a link up cos I'm using the gumtree phone app £400 Inc hard case. Someone on here grab this, if i hadn't just got my SUB I'd be all over it
3.
This is not the first time that I've seen this kind of selfless offer on BC recently; what a lovely bunch of folks you all are. Group hug! I bet you don't get this on other forums.
I have to agree. Am new to the forum and am finding it to be a really friendly and informative resource. The only downside is the unhealthy dose of GAS I keep getting. Mcnach I would very much like too take you up on your kind offer. Will send a pm.
4. I take it that is a pretty simple mod To carry out? Just a wee bit of rewiring/soldering? Thanks for all the infos.
5.
Don't forget your strap and your appliance. Heh, heh.
6.
My first ever mm was one of these and I'd still say it was the best sounding one I ever owned even compared to a 25th anniv 5 string I had at one point. Only bad point was the non profiled edge digging in to your forearm above the bridge but that was a small gripe. Great to get a bargain like that. Enjoy.
Cheers geezer It is an interesting sounding one, with flats on it, it sounds more like a classical instrument than an electric bass which is frankly awesome In a previous life i played in a hardcore band and the non profiled edge would probably have destroyed my arm if i we're still fast picking. Now I'm trying to learn finger style it's no big deal.
7.
The SBMM guy has stated that the preamp and pickups are different in their instruments to those made by EBMM. Having a centre detent knob does not automatically mean it is cut/boost, and if it is, it does not mean the centre detent is where the flat point is...
It kind of sounds like it can cut the bass, where the US one just gives you bass or more slightly different sounding bass. I'm sure you're right about the positioning of the centre detent (thanks for the vocab) not necessarily being in the right place and I'm not that surprised about the different hardware. The Indonesian one is a great and probably a more versatile beast, but i have fallen for the warm tones of the EBMM
8. Hi John Pm'd back Sold, pending discreet liaison
9.
Time to have a peek inside at the pickup and preamp on both basses imo, I would get a push pull pot fitted for series parallel on the usa bass.
Is fitting a push-pull easy enough to do?
10. Having just had a proper play around I have come to two definite conclusions. The flat wounds sound too flat for want of a better word on the us sub, so will be putting round wounds back on. The pre amp on the other one is way more responsive, you can almost get a P tone by cutting the bass and using a pick, even with the flatwounds on and i definitely can't do that with the US version.
11. all i know is that the indonesian one has cut and boost on both the treble and the bass, since there is a little midpoint "notch" that the pots click into. other than than that i am just getting confused, but that's nothing new
12. Hello Selling my Sterling SUB ray5, since I now have a MIA one and can't justify keeping both. Looking for £250 for it and am not interested in trades because I'm already in too much trouble This was bought just over a month ago, has some light pick marks on the scratchplate, but is otherwise in pristine condition. For clarity, this is the Made in Indonesia version. Am based in Edinburgh and would be most happy if someone could pick it up, or would be prepared to meet somewhere within a sensible radius. I still have the cardboard double skinned box and packing pieces that i received it in and would be happy enough to arrange couriering, so long as this was at the purchasers risk and expense. Any questions, please feel free to ask. 14. Hello I'm finding the differences pretty hard to put into words. Main ones are these Indonesian sounds best (sounds most like) for another one bites the dust and has a little more edge when played finger style. The american one seems to have a really really warm rich tone. It sounds nice playing just a simple major scale. Really smooth sustained notes. The pickup is different (on the 5er anyway, i notice that on the four string versions they are the same) in appearance anyway but I don't know enough to know if there is an actual difference. I really like the slab body on the US version. I was worried since i am a little bit on the bony side but it it's very comfortable to play. It weighs a good couple of extra kilos which might bother some folks but means no neck dive and may be why the sustain is better. The nut is really well machined on the US compared top the rubbery one on the Indonesian version. In general i found out easier to get a wide range of tones from the Indonesian one, but i prefer playing the other one. So much so that the indonesian one is going to have to go. I can take some detail close up comparison pictures of the nut, frets, pickup etc. If anyone would be intetested in seeing them. I doubt I'd be able top record anything worth hearing given my lack of technology and having to swap strings back and fOrth for a true comparison.
15.
Well played old mate! I must have missed that one although not sure how, I have been trauling for a sub 5 for a couple of weeks! Glad you are happy, hope I can get a hold of one soon, this GAS is killing me!
I had serious GAS ever since getting the made in Indonesia version, but am feeling better now. At least you'll be up against one less person when the next one comes up. Good luck.
16. I think that i may have been exceptionally flukey Excited to get it home, clean the dust, grime and mold off, new strings, new battery and plug it in. Am also looking forward to hearing the difference between it and my indonesian version (which i ordered before realising there was a superior version available if you looked hard enough).
17. Absolutely made up to have gotten hold of this beauty, spotted it just after it was listed on ebay and snaffled it. it's very dusty, but has no evidence of even light use. mislisted as a sterling sub and therefore was listed at the current market value of the sterling version. where's the lucky git emoticon? Who said you can't still find a bargain online
18. wearing the bass low slung to ensure that (i thought) i looked right on stage similarly to above buying a bass so that it looked right, rather than because i liked the look of it and wanted to own and play it on its own merits
19. on gumtree in Bradford http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/ernie-ball-musiman-stingray-4-string-bass/1036401199 seems like a bit of a bargain
20.
One thing I will say though is that Musicians Friend/Borderfree (the International shippers) could improve their communications significantly.
Agree I recieved my bass last thurday from MF and if i had spotted your original post I would have commented. I was sent the identical message as yours and when nothing happened for five days, I emailed them asking what the deal was. they responded with a give it another five days and contact us again. the bass arrived three days later at which point they sent me a final email telling me that they had found out that my bass had been successfully delivered. If there original email went along the lines of "your order has been successful and your goods are now with the courier, who you will hear nothing from for several days, so don't panic", that would be great. I too paid the duty up front and all went smoothly on that front. a good system
21. Cheers guys. Glad to finally be here
22. Just bought and received a wee ashdown after eight amp from Steve. Kept me well up to date with regular progress messages and amp arrived well packaged. Wouldn't hesitate to do business again with him
23. Hi there Have returned to playing bass after a 12-year absence (notwithstanding a reunion gig 8-ish years ago) and have been reading and taking advice (selective advice as most do) from your forums and finally received my bass (modern S.U.B. ray 5) yesterday and amp (Ashdown after 8) today. desperation during this absence led me to turn my crap acoustic guitar into a really crap acoustic bass. actually, all the strings bar the low E sound good. will be dropping it off at a charity shop in the near future. if i'd had the budget i would've opted for the US made SUBs, but too hard to justify at this stage. A link someone posted on here about the recent ones being cheapish on musiciansfriend, led me to spotting a 2nd hand 5er on their site that worked out at just over £200, including shipping and duties, so i just went and bought it. I used to play in a hardcore band that recorded a couple of demos, but other than that have never played the bass live. Used to play Euphonium at school but was only taught treble clef, so part of resuming my playing is to learn to read bass clef. Also my technique was more than slightly lacking the last time i played bass, so i have vowed to spend at least a little time at the start of each session on this. can't think of anything else other than glad not to be a lurker anymore
