Thanks for the heads up! iPlayer link to save anyone else the search, Euan Hastie is at about 1h06 but it all looks worth watching/listening to. I concur that the Markbass rig is Michael Mondesir's and Hastie isn't using it.

I don't think I've seen anyone play upright left-handed before, have I missed anyone notable who does this or is it rather unusual?

I can’t seem to embed any footage, but checkout Nicolas Dubouchet on YouTube or Facebook. He’s a fantastic lefty player

Taking a chance on an old thread… I’m looking for a Fender Dimension USA Deluxe V HH, if anyone has one or sees one in the wild… please please send them my way! Preference is for a black body/ maple neck.

Exactly what I had, even the black body/maple neck. Nice bass, sadly no longer with me. Hope you find one.

  3. A very special hand built electric bass guitar by world renowned American luthier Rob Allen. With its chambered body (with walnut top) and piezo pickup system, combined with the LaBella nylon wrapped strings and small frets, this bespoke instrument is ideal for jazz or for copping that acoustic, almost upright bass sound.

This example is crazy light, yet balances superbly

  4. White with white pick guard, lovely roasted maple neck. All latest spec from this current model including 18V re voiced preamp. Not a heavy bass and comes with Musicman fitted hard case and “case candy”.

I brought it brand new just over a year ago for a specific band which I am no longer playing with, so not getting the use it deserves.

New equivalent would be at least a couple of £thousand (some colours nearer £3,000!) This is as good as new with no marks I am aware of.

My 2001 Stingray now has a Nordy MM4.2 pickup, a John East MMSR preamp and a series/parallel/single switch. A lot of tinkering, but it sounds great. (I especially like series mode on the Nordy and a little low mid bump from the John East).

But I think what I like about it, probably even more than the sound, is the body shape. I just find it super comfortable - it really ‘fits’ me. Ditto the neck profile actually.

My current probably-daft-but-still-tempted idea is to get a (lightweight!) Stingray-shaped body made and have the neck and electrics from my Fender Dimension HH fitted to it. I really like the Dimension pickups/EQ (which might be a relatively unusual opinion), and it has a great pro level Fender neck, but I can’t seem to bond with the body….

Agree, I had two dimensions; the pick ups for me, are the most comfortable to rest your thumb on and sound great. Not so keen on the body shape. I think Fender threw everything they knew at the Dimension; really tried to make a modern Fender (for all the good it did them!) Much more thought went into it then the current Meteora IMO

Think it's still Neil Fairclough on bass?

Yes, I’m sure it is. I had a chat with him a few years ago when he was playing with a friend of mine at a local theatre. Seems like a really nice bloke. Next time I saw him it was at the O2 with Brian May standing beside him in place of my friend! He looks to have done pretty well for himself!

  7. Admit I haven’t read whole thread, but for a cool chick with a BF in a band I’d go for a second hand Mustang; they’re cool, a bit Indy and easy to play and learn on. They’re short scale so not as much of a handful a P or J, also lighter all of which is handy if you’re used to instruments with a shorter scale. Second choice would be a short scale or medium scale Jaguar for similar reasons

I can’t comment on all instruments, only my own. I have 3 US Precisions with maple fretboards and 2 US Precisions with rosewood fretboards, all the same series, with same pickups, same strings (of the same age & gauge) and all set up the same. The rosewood ones sound deeper, the maple ones more twangy. It was especially evident in band practice. Whether that’s the same with all of them I can’t say, only in relation to my 5. And as I’m getting another rosewood one next week I’ll find out if it’s 6 of the best!

I’m with you on this. Wood or construction must make some difference. I have had my classic 50s P for 11 years (it’s a great bass). When I first had it I played more rock stuff and it excelled. More recently I have played more 50s/60s material and I’d have thought the bass (with flats) would be perfect, but no, still rocky. I changed the pick-up for a Fender custom shop 62 to improve, but still wants to rock and I can’t get the tone I hear from others with a P with flats. I have tried different strings and it does change the sound, but that bass’s personality shines through even with different pickup and different strings.

  9. I have an Ibanez EHB1505 33-35 scale and I’d say Yes, I think it helps. This is because it encourages better technique and the position of the wrist is more natural. Also the stretch on the higher strings is reduced.

  10. I have the Ibanez 1505MS. The advantages for me are:

    1. Light weight

    2. ergonomic

    3. good, tight B string (35”)

    4. Rounded, full G string (33”)

    5. Compact size, despite long scale

    6. less stretching to fret the notes

    The disadvantages are:

    1. Doesn’t fit with band image (unless you play in a metal band etc)

    2. It’s stereotyped as a “metal bass”
