Absolute bargain, someone will be happy with this one !
It is a super bass indeed.
The neck on these is quite substantial, and very confortable, closer to the Yamaha BB series than to a Jazz type neck.

Did the Fralin split 51 eventually arrive and how did it sound ?

I am considering having the samed upgrade on the same lovely bass, and wondering if the magnet stagger is an issue or not. The flat profile on the original pickup sound just fine, and I would fear a volume varation between the strings with the raised pole pieces.

Traded a bass with G.
He did arrange all the admin and the courriers both ways to and from outside the UK (with all the extra tax form things). Excellent communications and solid bullet-proof packing shipped as fast as an arrow.
The bass is in pristine condition as stated.

I have owned one and only sold it to a good friend as I did unsurprisingly feel more comfortable on long scale basses.
The new owner loves it and she has never played a better bass, well made, a wide array of tones, and flawless build quality.

Those small differences give the seamingly boring conventionnaly shaped Js and Ps endless appeal.

I've done it on old Fenders in order to double check the date stamped on the neck or for adjusting the trussrod, but I would not take those high end neck apart from the body without being suspicious on having a slight effect on the general set up.

- Please note I do not have the gear to make proper soundclips and tone comparison - This is purely subjective.

The difference between a rosewood and a maple neck has been discussed all over again.
I have always tended to prefer a maple board, with which I have a better feeling.

Yamaha is well known for its consistent build quality.
The Yamaha BB2024 and BB2024x series are particularly consistent from one to another.

I have spent ages searching for a maple board Yamaha BB2024MX, and have found one to compare with my BB2024 (now on sale, as the MX was quite pricey)

Specs :

The BB2024 weights 4.1kg

the BB2024Mx 4.1 to 4.2kg

Both happily built by same guy (m. Kobayashi)

Strings : both have new D'addario EXL160 nickel round wounds 50 . 70 . 85 . 105

I have tried to set them up as identically as possible, including the pickup height

Testing conditions :

I have compared them many times at low volume on a Phil Jones briefcase at home, a very clean and faithfull little amp.

I have spent a few hours playing both on a Fender TB1200 head with a 2x10 and 15 cab.

Feel :

The BB2024Mx seems to have more high mids and very deep lows, as if it was EQed a bit, with a little cut in the low mids

The BB2024 rosewood board feels like it has a more linear tone, but does not lack any of the overtones the Mx has.
I thought the rosewood grain did dim those a bit. It seems it does not.

Switching from one bass to the other - especially with the Precision pickup only, to which I am accustomed - they feel different.
The Mx maybe a bit brighter, more aggressive, and the rosewood has a little bit more of that big punchy hump in the low mids the Precision lovers do love.

Both are really similar, and the Mx is the one I prefer considering the looks, the fingerboard wood, and the rarity on the market, but the BB2024 with the rosewood fingerboard actually, and oddly, feels a bit better to me.

It may have something to do with the setup. Maybe the BB range was designed to be bright enough with a rosewood board, and is perfectly balanced like this. Maybe the difference is not related to the fretboard.

That is absolutely not a scientific approach.

I would have liked to have the gear or know someone locally to make a comparison video, but I will probably have to sell the 2024 beforehand.

This model is considered as one of the best P/J basses out there.

Now discontinued, it was carefully made in Japan by mister Kobayashi, and cost 2.900€ new.

IRA and ARE treatments do the job : endless sustain and great response as on a vintage bass.

The pickups are superb, the 3 way switch allows an uncompromised Precision sound, a more compressed P/J tone, and even the J is useable on its own.

Only selling this as I have a BB1200s and have found a BB2024MX (Oooooooooooh !!!!) with a maple board.
This is truly one of the best basses I've played, but I can not justify keeping it.

I had not thought about a Japanese calendar, and that makes total sense.
The guy at the FujiGen factory may have felt resentment against the American Fender guys.

And the headstock decal is 100% 80s Japanese

I happily bought this Squier JV 57 reissue from a local retired musician who was the only owner since 1985 (and was primarily an accordion player)

The serial number suggests it was made mid 1983 from what I gather.

The one ply pickguard and raised A string pole pieces seem to validate this is a 57 ri model

The trussrod needed a little tightening when I swapped the rusty old strings for a set of 50-105s.

And then I had to take the neck off...

... and found these inscriptions which seem OK:

but this date : isn't it wrong ?

At first I thought it read 6-22 38, which could be a somehow reversed 22 June1983.

Is the 58 a joke from a Japanese employee?

Would any Fender / Squier expert have seen this before?

This is superb.

There aren't many 83s around.
The neck is wide at the nut indeed (44mm), but quite thin front to back, and the edges of the fretboard are a bit stiff, making it a rather uncommon profile.
I like it.

These Dan Smith era Fenders are the last ones built at the Fullerton plant.
