1.
Are you serious, mate?
Yes. He is one of the worlds top bassists* like it or not, I don't believe he's the best, both technically and musically people do surpass him, but with seeing clips like that, I can see why others people do think he's truely great. To be clear I was commenting on the video rather than his career and output.

*Note, top bassist could consist of say him being in the top percentile of the world's population of bassists and out of 7 billion people who could possibly play........

  2. The Academy needs a bit more advertisement anyway, it had a blitz in the papers when it was announced the other year, but don't really see much about it now in the local area.
It's had some decent names play there since it opened, granted I've been in Pompey so I couldn't go, but I've heard it's not a bad venue.

  3. As for the pre-amp, there are a few threads on BC: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry265536 is an example.

I think the reason why it gets less mentioned is because a fair few people know about it on BC, they consider it as part of the bass for custom builds or as an upgrade fairly frequently, or at least they do on the threads I've been reading and it's no longer a spanking new product. It's accepted.

    Edit:

As for the cut down basses, I do remember a thread about it being planned, I wasn't aware they'd got off the ground yet.

  4. Hmmm, what're you feelings on classical music?

Transposing stuff from other instruments to bass is a good work out for your reading skills as well :)

You could always branch into metal and rock, for starters Iron Maiden and Metallica have good songs and quite a few awesome basslines.

As for improv, sing a bassline that fits with the song, then play what you sing. Easy to say, suprisingly difficult to do.

  5. If you want to find out if it's really unique and maybe get a small little proof of that from EBMM, might as well go on their forum and ask nicely. Not to mention if you open it up to some of the serious EBMM people in America, someone may be interested in paying top dollar for it and will be ok with paying for the shipping.

I have to ask, if you've managed to blow up 4 amplifiers, are you using them correctly? Because managing to blow up four different models seems much more like user fault than manufacturing fault or a run of very bad bad luck.

Not saying it isn't possible to have 4 unreliable ones, but just strikes me as excessive.

  7. Filled it out.

Not a brilliant survey, barring a couple of errors such as "disposable" rather than "disposal".
The question about "improving" tone is wrong and you've already mentioned the negative tone alterting aspects (which I presume you're thinking of loss of low end), perhaps it should be reworded to mention it won't be detrimental to your tone like other pedals can be.

  8.
I Hope the Tokai are are better build than the Epiphone. I will give it a go and if i dont like it i'll try and shift it on ebay. There are are a few sites showing how to move the strap nut including a thread on basschat.
Epiphone are normally pretty good across all the instruments I've tried.

Granted, the other poster has picked up a Friday afternoon special, and being honest, my current second hand Epi T-bird is also a Friday Special as the bridge isn't centered properly, which I can't be arsed to fix as it was bought on the cheap, although I'll concede the finish on mine is brilliant and sounds fantastic.
Neck dive isn't an issue as you can move the pin off the horn to behind the neck heel (imo, might be too far, might get away with just moving it a couple of inches down the horn), and my first Epi Tbird I bought blind from new (and regret selling) a few years back was perfect barring one very minor smudge in the finish by a pup cavity.

Try before you buy I think, but like I mentioned, hold out for the pro.

As a fyi, new Epi T-birds are around £215 now (with delivery), but the new Pro's will be just shy of £400 with delivery from the prices I've seen.

  9. Wait for reviews on the new Epi Pro if I were you, they should be hitting shops end of this month in the UK. Like mentioned in the aforementioned threads that have been linked to, it could fill the gap between the completely different current Epi T-bird and it's Gibson counterpart nicely.

  10.
Thinking about it some more, in absence of any funds to get a Mike Lull, I think I'll have to have a look at the Epiphone Thunderbird Pro V and if I like it get one and have it refinished in solid black to get rid of that horrible stripy neck. Anyone know what the ETA of them is in the UK?
Thomann seem to be expecting a delivery on the 24th of this month.
