1. Hi W well if you have them out of your bass, sure why not...but if not, i thank you for the offer but since everyone agrees these are NOT the original Duncan Designed PU's, please don't finally i was just curious to determine what they could be but ultimately what matters is that they DO sound real nice ! ;-) are you happy w/ your new toy ? isn't this an amazing bass for the price & a GREAT way to try out a fretless without spending a small fortune ? i AM thrilled i got this... man, when i was a kid EVERY bass that cost this little, it's fretwork would shred one's hands to pieces & they'd sound like s***e !!....LOL.... although there are plenty of high-end basses i WOULD get in a heart beat if i had enough funds to blow, fact is i'm having a ball pursuing this ''very cheap/well built/upgrade electronics later'' approach - there REALLY are some little gems out there costing next to nothing sure, one doesn't get any of those amazingly good looking exotic woods/top of the range hand finishes BUT....sound wise ? WOW !!
2.
The pots & wiring look OK - but; "then there's this green thing, printed on it's side : K 42Y - 2, 160V, 0,0047uF +/- 10%" you've either got an extra zero in there or it's the wrong value cap, typical Jazz bass cap should be .047uF. Does the tone control seem to work, or not much difference? Someone has definitely upgraded the pots to good quality & right value/type CTS, 250K A = Audio Log, 0626 = made in 2006 week 26. The Russian cap was probably sold as an expensive 'upgrade' from ebay or similar, so could well be the wrong value. Cheerz, John
hi John no the zeros are as printed in the cap ( capacitor ?.. ) & although the tone control does work now that you mention this it does strike me as having a somewhat limited range & flat feels treblier ( for lack of a better word..) than i think it should - all the way for more bass adds not too much bass, all the way to the treble side adds quite a bit of treble could this be caused by the cap value you mention or is it part of this type of PU's ? my other basses are either P/J ( Cort Action 4 A w/ standard electronics..) or in my Cort GB35's case : Delano J/MM + Delano Sonar2 preamp, both use a blend pot... cheers
3. hi guys i agree w/ you guys - the bass has definitely been redone using nicer parts : a friend of mine who works in this music store were i get my strings, etc...tried it & he told me that it was definitely quieter than originally, he also liked it's tone a lot the volume issue is very much so as Mr.Foxen states above & now that i know it's ''normal'' for Jazz Basses i have no issues with that - it's just that in every other bass i've had this was never the case since they were of the 1 vol.pot/blend pot variety not knowing any better i was left wondering if it had been tinkered w/ by someone w/ good intentions but lacking some expertise as for the wiring diagram, i got that exact same one & yes everything is fine i think all i need to do for now is to try out raising/lowering the PU's & get used to setting one volume pot to slightly less than all the way up one more problem solved - thanks guys !!
4. well, not wanting to take advantage of you guys but since we're all here & considering you are a lot more knowledgeable than me in these matters... even when i was only thinking about buying it, i've been toying with the idea of getting a preamp for it... now on my Cort GB35 i got a Delano Sonar2 preamp & it sounds AWESOME but 1 - wouldn't it make this bass sound a bit like the Cort 2 - in your experience what would be a preamp that would bring the ''sonic signature'' of this instrument forth but still preserving it ? if it brought a bit extra ooomph to the table i wouldn't mind either....
5. ok, did the photos - if curious you can check them here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/13706825@N03/sets/72157634522800076/ all seems pretty good, i compared the wiring to the link you sent me & as far as i can tell, it's all there the pots are CTS, ref nº 013446 250K A 0626 CTS then there's this green thing, printed on it's side : K 42Y - 2, 160V, 0,0047uF +/- 10% any ideas what the PU's on this bass could be ? besides having absolutely no identifying marks the only thing is that blue tape - typical of any manufacturer you guys might know ? not that it matters since as i said, it DOES sound quite GOOD - i'm just curious what they might be.. Mr.Foxen : i understand what you're saying, not knowing this just shows how ignorant i am !! :-b anyway, all your input is MUCH APPRECIATED, this forum rocks...many thanks Nuno
6.
Thought this was gonna be a cheech & chong type thread
if only !!....LOL....
7. i just took the whole thing apart to take some photos, would appreciate if you could take a look sometime later/tomorrow - as far as i can tell it all looks kosher, the pots are CTS but the PU's have NOTHING on them that could shed some light but a friend in a musicstore played it & told me they are definitely quieter than Duncan Designed original PU's !?....
8. thank you for your input ! i had a look at the Seymour Duncan site but thought maybe the Squier had a wiring of it's own i definitely have to take it apart & get some photos happening otherwise .....
9. Hi guys just dropping by to ask a couple of things about my Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass, recently acquired 2nd hand for 200€.. the pickups are definitely NOT Duncan Designed - since they bear no markings whatsoever, i'll pull them out one of these days to check out if there are any clues under them... they sound quite nice & are on the quiet side of things as far as hum & other ''afflictions''... however it's the pot's behaviour that baffle me a bit : 1 - i have 1 Volume pot per PU & 1 tone pot for both PU. when i set BOTH vol. pots to their max, the sound kind of ''ducks'' a little !? 2 - if i back one or the other a tiny bit the overall level actually goes up 3 - if turn all the way down either of them & the remaining one to it's max i get a full sound as well, w/ good volume, punch, etc... looking at the control plate & without having pulled it out, i can see the knobs are a bit further away from the plate than usual in these basses - could they have been replaced - ''upgraded'' !?.. - w/ what seems to be longer shaft ones & maybe even the wrong type ? what would the original spec be ? perhaps even an original wiring diagram so i can compare what was & what's there ? it's not like the bass DOESN'T sound good - it does & it's tone is actually quite nice but i never had anything such as this volume ducking happen to me before so i'm a bit baffled last but not least : i think i'd like to make it active - what would be ''the right way to do it'' if there's such a thing... now i can't but tomorrow i'll post some photos - any suggestions about what could be off would be most welcome many thanks to all Nuno
10. welcome Marco um abraço & hope you enjoy this forum, it's GREAT !! ;-)
11. Hi Lozz196 just dropping a line to let you know it has arrived, it's in GREAT condition - really well taken care of.. - i've already played with it & yes it does sound like a quality piece of kit now all i need is to dial in an EQ i like & take it from there, a couple of pics just for fun : http://www.flickr.com/photos/13706825@N03/9078854762/in/set-72157634200278558/lightbox/ & all lit up & ready to go - damn, it even looks prettier than a Christmas tree ! ;-) http://www.flickr.com/photos/13706825@N03/9076608559/in/set-72157634200278558/lightbox/ again thanks for your help !
12. leave it to Basschat to get almost instant replies to one's plights !! thanks guys ;-) this particular amp has an air inlet in its fascia + a fan in it's rear panel & Mr. Ian Savage - don't be cheeky : i already ordered the 25U, refrigerated rack for those !! what do you think ? i wouldn't be caught dead w/ one of those dinky 1U things on the road man, i've got standards....LOL... so 2U it is then.... cheers guys
13. Hi Guys here i am again, pestering everyone w/ questions that probably got answered a million times - my apologies if that's the case ! but....i couldn't find much about it here so, here it goes : this monday my Hartke LH1000 bass head arrives, it's a 2U high head & although most of the time it will be at home sitting quietly on top of my cab or an adjoining table, fact is it WILL go out & have a ''good time'' every so often.. so i want to buy a rack for it, a plastic one will be enough since no one is going to be tossing it around, i will doing any moving, gently, lovingly, carefully - damn, i just realised this almost sounded like a soundtrack for a soft porn.... LOL... anyway, i'm considering getting something like a Gator or Rhino, SKB, whatever, whatever but my problem is i'm NOT too comfortable with the idea of getting a smaller 2U rack case for it - somehow a 3U or even a 4U makes more sense to me as in - extra space for air to ''wick away'' heat from it, etc ? even add a fan or two ? am i over-thinking it & a plain jane 2U rack will be just fine ? oh, by the way, i live in the algarve ( south of Portugal.. ) were temperatures in summer easily climb up to 42, 45 degrees Centigrade ( 115 Fahrenheit ?.. ) for 2, 3 weeks every summer & most of the remaining 4 summer months are steadily around the 32 to 37 degrees Centigrade mark ( 90 to 98 F ?.. ) the rest of the year being quite mild
14.
Says the man judging a huge swathe of people by their nationality rather than any actual qualities of individuals.
......LMAO !!!!......people are people regardless of nationality, creed, race, whatever....we ALL do the same stuff ! ;-)
15. Hi Lozz196 & sorry for getting back to you so late : was away for a while on my dirt bike, no computers, no stress - BLISS ! i hear you & i'm SO VERY tempted to get it, actually sod it !! i AM getting it....LOL.... i posted the same question/request on Talkbass & since the answers were all VERY positive i'm going to go for it when i get it i'll let you know again many thanks cheers Nuno
16. hi guys after selling my 30 year old Peavey Combo 300 i've recently bought a Warwick WCA411 Pro secondhand & a new Hartke LH1000 to have at our rehearsal room but was left with nothing to play at home looking up the OLX site i spotted a Eden Nemesis RS410 combo for 450€, nice & tidy & i got curious about it - after all Eden has a quality reputation right ? & i figured it would make a perfect combo to replace my Peavey at home since for rehearsing/gigging i'm kind of set now... problem is that no matter how i phrased my Googling, little or nothing came up in the guise of reviews, posts, etc... about this combo - which to be honest i found disconcerting so here i am to solicit your help once again oh great ones : anyone who has had or played with this combo, knows of horror stories involving it would you be so kind as to share them with me ? pretty please ? is it reliable? does it cut through a mix in a band setting ? does it go loud & punchy, type of tone, etc, etc.... just so you have an idea of the ''void'' on this combo out there this is the ONLY thing i found in YouTube, home to most everything that exists on this planet & yet.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K7D1JI2URE any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks guys Nuno
17. me ....AGAIN !! talk about NOT letting go ! ;-) just dropping a line to tell you i went ahead & did trade the LH500 for the LH1000 - for an extra 129€, you know ? what the hell, it IS hard to resist... since i'm planning on building a 15/6 fEARful in the near future & later on when budget allows a 15 fEARful sub to go with it, i thought i might as well have those 750W @ 8 ohms/1100W @ 4 ohms of the LH1000 in bridged mode + it weighs basically the same &.....yeah, it's true : i'll never grow up ;-) anyway, when the fEARful build starts i'll post some photos : i want it to be WICKED !!! again thank you so much to all who chipped in
18. hi again... yes guys you were right : the LH500 ROCKS, swings, skas, shuffles, ''blueses'' - it does everything & quite well i tweaked & tweaked the EQ & yesterday when playing with the guys, EVERYONE complimented the LH/Warwick combo's sound effusively since the jam's format on thursdays is along the lines of anyone can bring an instrument & join in & even though there were 7 people playing a variety of things, i didn't need to set it on more than 6 to pump out a nice, massive sound so MAYBE i should consider playing at lower volumes at home !?....LOL... when we finished around 4AM, the EQ settings i ended up with & which sounded absolutely FINE in that context were : Bass on 5, Mids on 3 & Treble on 4.5 the tweeter attenuator on the speaker was set at about 9 o'clock, my basse's EQ set flat & my Zoom B3 as usual had the compressor on & a slight pinch of chorus, set so it gives a ''drive like'' sound to the lower end & a bit of shimmer to the higher notes this way notes were punchy, warm yet detailed & chords sounded fat, almost menacing even but with a nice ring to them & each string could be heard clearly - no mud whatsoever so a big thank you to all, i sure appreciate your input helping put my mind at ease it's official : i LOOOOVE my Hartke LH500 ! ;-) cheers
19. Hi guys please forgive not addressing each one of you - you are so many chipping in, it's great !! yup, i definitely must play around with the LH500's EQ ! as i said earlier, i used to play with a Seymour Duncan 400 bass head coupled to a 2X15'', 4Ohm speaker cab i built, an exact replica of a friend's Ampeg 2X15'' cab.. when i plugged in my 78 Precision it sounded absolutely nuts : creamy, molten lava like with a fierce kick in the gut thrown in for good measure when needed, LOTS of headroom, all in a very primal/physical kind of way. you could lay 3000 instruments on top of it, it wasn't a very ''obvious/forward sound'' but if i stopped playing EVERYBODY would notice something WAS missing later when i sold it & quit playing - long boring story - i'll spare you.. - i kept my Peavey, ''just in case'' & when i came back to playing the bass i DID have to fiddle with it to ''kind of'' replicate the sound i had & loved - ALMOST being the operative word... the Peavey, as honest & hard working as a 30 year old combo can be, tends to always have a ''in your face'' kind of sound & it took a lot of adjusting it's reasonably flexible EQ section to make it sound pretty decent BUT.....it's still what it is !... & i have been playing the hell out of it for a few months now so...yes, i might have interiorized it's sound as a ''reference'' by now ! as for this little guy, the Hartke LH500...as soon as it got it out of the box & plugged it in ( it took like....15 secs flat !?...LOL...) it immediately sounded very much like the Seymour Duncan or at least as i remember it sounding but baffled me by apparently ''lacking'' the punch the Seymour definitely had hence my immediate reaction this could be due to a less than perfect cab/amp interaction !? even if in theory a 150 or 200W amp SHOULD suffice to make this or most any reasonably sensitive cab go loud.... i've read the EQ section in the LH's user manual & mind you i've only played through it for a day now - so i'm sure lots more must be achievable.. - i'll definitely toy with it some more & see what results i manage mind you, it's true i DO play quite LOUD at home : since all my neighbours are out at work for the day until 6 or 6.30 ..... ;-) ..... i just get something going through my hi-fi by R.A.T.M, INXS, Skunk Anansie, King Crimson, etc, etc....& yes, loud enough so it feels like the band is in the room playing with me/me with them - otherwise it doesn't ''move me'' enough to REALLY get into it, you know what i mean ? what can i say in my deffense ? i'm an animal & definitely NOT fit to live in an apartment or in polite society for that matter !....LOL.... anyway, i'm waffling....regardless of the results, i WILL post back to pass on my findings thank you so much to each & everyone who chipped in, it's MUCH appreciated & needless to say but if ever any of you is in my neck of the woods, drop me a line - at the very least we could go grab a beer, annoy the neighbours or something... cheers guys !!
20. Hi Adrenochrome my original reaction was that perhaps mine being the 8Ohm, 600W cab ( also bought 2nd hand over here & brought to my door.. ) it might just be too demanding on the LH500 which ''only'' pumps out 300 & some watts under an 8Ohm load - or am i simply becoming hard of hearing in my old age ?...LOL.... as i said, i have a couple weeks to fiddle with it & that's what i'll do, it does have such a great tone cheers
21. hi Conan yes, you might be right : up to 5 it's like hardly anything happens at all volume wise !? i only found it odd since my only reference as far as bass heads was a Seymour Duncan 400 amp head i had a LONG time ago & man, with the volume set on 5 one could hardly stand next to it - it would literally make the windows ''bulge out'' if you know what i mean since Session has a 14 day return/no questions asked & a 66 day exchange policies for anything costing above 40€ ( free carriage back to them for the 14 day return !? how cool is THAT ?.. ) i'll definitely play around with the LH500 volume & EQ settings because i DO LIKE it's tone & maybe it's the way i've set the EQ - i've read it works in a pretty unconventional way i'll start off by taking it to our weekly jam session tonight & see how it sounds there - sometimes just playing alone at home things sound different whatever i do, i'll post back - many thanks for your input Nuno

24. ohhh....... you're BAD !!!!! ;-) giving in is SO SWEET !...LOL...
25. Hi guys i'm back.....with a vengeance !!! ;-) FINALLY ! my Peavey Combo is sorted - a friend gave me the contact of this guy near where i live, he does mainly repair work on mixers, power amps/ PA maintenance & such so i sent him an email, we made an appointment & today i took just the Peavey's amp section leaving the cab at home.... got to his place, he had already sourced a schematic for it & started immediately working on it - right there in front of me !? after checking & re-checking, measuring & re-measuring FINALLY he found what was causing havoc : one contact of a teeny weeny zener diode was badly oxidised so it ''de-soldered'' itself loose-ish & developed an intermittent contact with the board & a badly regulated current ( 23V instead of 15 i think he told me.. ) check the photo here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/1370682...ream/lightbox/ - the faulty ''wire'' is the one facing down, towards those condensers when i asked him how much i owed him, he turned & charged me 50€ for 3 hours labour, 2 extra 4A fuses & a cleaning spray - how cool is that ? as i was leaving, since he's worked w/ all sorts of Peavey gear over the years & knows most inside out, he guaranteed me my combo is ready for another 20 or 30 years !!...LOL... plop, plop, fizz, fizz.....aahhhhh.....instant relief !! yes , life is good again ;-) only one big problem now : since i had psyched myself up that the repair would be terribly expensive, i kindda decided to get this simple yet very sexy little Hartke LH500 head & build a couple of 12/6 fEARful cabs to go with it ! so let me ask you : what am i supposed to do now with this ''acute case of unreleased GAS'' ?? talk about coitus interruptus, jeez !!...... anyway i want to take the opportunity to thank all for your input/suggestions - it 's been VERY appreciated !! cheers guys !...
