Pleased the Lekato has worked out.  As I said earlier, for the money it has to be worth a try.

re. distance from router.  I assume your Aux out that you feed is XLR; can you not simply get an XLR to minijack lead and site it away from the router?  I actually run an XLR across to my side of the stage so that the Lekato is nearer to me.

I do the same with my lekato 5.8, I plug an xlr cable into the mixer and the other other end into the transmitter and haven’t had any trouble. We stated using one for a wireless mic as well, but that goes straight into the mixer

I would never have had the courage to dep without having done some jams.

The two key points are (1) no one dies and (2) usually someone leads the song who wants to do it and unless it's really well known everyone else is flying by the seat of their pants, not just you.

I once had the conductor of a symphony orchestra explain the detailed structure of his guitar song to me and a drummer. We just looked at each other and managed to dive in at the right point.  The rest was guesswork...🤣

I have been to one before, and kind of cheated as I knew the band and their set list, and so learnt a few of there songs in advance. Unfortunately the ones I had learnt they played as the warm up to the evening 😂.

in the end we had a run through of a few that I hadn’t prepared in advance and it was fine.

There is a local one this Wednesday, and I am going to try and get to that.

  3. I keep advertising for dep opportunities on Facebook and join my band, but limited success so far. I got offered a couple that were subsequently cancelled, and then one on a date that I couldn’t do.

I am going to start going to some local jam nights to see if that leads to anything. These are well out of my comfort zone as I like to be prepared and rehearsed before playing, and am not at all comfortable with jamming and improvising, but will give it a go and see what happens.

  4. I tried to put my KZ ZS10s into an old ACS custom molded pair of ear plugs. They just about fit sat at my desk, but I think if I was moving around playing they would fall out, unless I taped them to my ear, which I don’t really want to have to do.

Am  now looking at getting some ACS molded IEMs,  but I also need some new molded ear plugs as my current ones are 5 years old and don’t quite seal properly. Need to decide which ones to prioritise as can’t really justify getting both at the minute

What about a dep for Mr Homebody? 1 gig a month is hardly enough to keep it tight.

He sings and plays guitar, so would be quite hard to get a dep for. It’s a frustrating situation but am trying to be proactive about it.

I've had this with Club Foot, where the original bassine was recorded by the guitarist, and the live version of the bass solo is very different to what's on the recorded version.

We played Club Foot on NYE and I have to go into 100% concentration mode for the solo. To my amazement, people were singing along to the bass solo, something I’ve never experienced before! This meant I had to concentrate even harder, to try and zone out the drunks!

  7. The brain works in funny ways. I was struggling with Long Train Runnin by The Doobie Brothers before Christmas. I had a look again yesterday after a few weeks break and got it no problem. This year I am trying to work on songs that are outside of my normal rock/indie genre to try and widen & improve my playing.

Last minute fill-in gig at a regular venue just popped up for tonight...we've nothing in till the 29th after that, tho the BL is a real gig-ferret, so there may be more. We've 25 or so gigs in for 2024 (inc NYE) so far, there'll be more..

We were going to use Jan to refresh the set list and maybe even have a rehearsal, we'll see how much time there is...

Thats great to have so many gigs booked for 2024 already. We've got 11 booked so far, but one of members doesn't want to commit to anymore, which is frustrating so I am busily trying to find dep opportunities or a second band

Back home from our NYE eve gig at The Oak in Sevenoaks. We had our first gig as a band here earlier in the year and so it was nice to be back.

gig went well, the pub was very busy but it took a while for the dance floor to fill up, but when it did it was chaos. Drinks being spilled everywhere, mic stand & iPad knocked over, people walking across the band area and tripping over our cable etc, I am amazed that nothing got broken.

the very drunk crowd did spoil the enjoyment of the gig due to constantly having to keep an eye on the equipment. I had to move my couple of pedals to the back of the stage by my amp due to spilled drinks.

we ended up moving some of the songs around to try and be more adaptive and reactive to the crowd. We initially dropped Club Foot but then ended up playing it just before midnight. The crowd were singing the bass solo, which was a very bizarre experience as no one has ever sung along to a bass solo at a gig before!

overall it was good fun and only half an hour from home. The main downside of today was getting some of the band lights out of the garage and discovering a leak :(

one of the cameras that we set up to record our NYE gig got accidentally set to time lapse mode, so we ended up with a three hour gig condensed into 1 minute

I don't think the UK has that robust a tipping culture to support a bucket pass around.  We barely tolerate tipping waiting staff, taxi drivers and hairdressers BECAUSE we're paying for something at the time anyway - to cold call people who have no direct business relationship with you, who believe that all music is basically free, magically happens and you're having fun so why should you be getting paid - I can see why the bucket comes back empty sometimes.

We generally push it most at the end of the gig, with something like "we'll play another song if you buy us a beer" kind of thing.

The tip jar is labelled as "beer money" as well. The way I see it is that if people are having a good time and want to buy a beer/chuck in a couple of quid then that's great, but if not that's also great, as long as they are having a good time

$100 tip aint too shabby. Maybe we should start a tip jar for our bands. Not something i've ever seen over here in Scotland altho i know some bands do it.

    Dave

We started doing doing it as we played our first few gigs for free, just to get going.

so we took the tip jar (a £1 bucket from B&Q with a flyer stuck on it) to try and make a little bit of cash and have just taken it ever since.

The most we have got is £90 and the least was £0

I was encouraged when I saw a punter drop a hundred dollar bill in our tip jar. Lol

We got 10p in our tip jar last night 😂

we think the problem was that it was a very young audience (20s/early 30s) and everyone was paying at the bar using Apple Pay and no longer using cash

I’m probably being a bit thick, but what do the (X)’s indicate.

They were ones that we were going to cut if we were running out of time to get to midnight. As it turned out we had plenty of time so played everything.

ps you are not being thick as I also had to ask what they meant 😂

  15. The YouTube bass videos are great, and I always appreciate the people who take time to post them with the tabs.

I wish that was available when I started learning 30 odd years ago.

me and the guitarist were talking the other day about what it was like buying a tab book and trying to follow along

  16. I am noticing more and more that when I listen back now to songs I learnt a long time ago and have been playing ever since, that what I thought was the bass line was nothing like what was actually recorded!

I think this is a mix between me now having better audio equipment and headphones, and general improvement as a player.

  17. Normally after a gig we would play a playlist of some sort through our PA whilst we pack up etc.

For NYE's gig I have said that we need shouldn't do that as it adds to the packing up time, as we can't breakdown the PA & mixer etc and we are all keen to get out of there ASAP.

On a side note, I saw today a quote generator for a wedding band, and on their list of options was an after gig playlist put through their PA, and they were charging nearly £200 for that as an extra add on to the main gig fee.

Well I'm very much a rookie and not seen any of the ones I have struggled with here and so will stay quiet about most of them!

That said a largely simple song - all right now - has an instrumental section that has a bar of standard fingering in the money zone followed by a jump to right up near the bridge with the open A played with the thumb, repeated over and over. Getting the notes in the right order and close to on time, just needs tidying up now!

    Screenshot_20231229_080820_Dropbox.jpg

I played this song at least once a month for 20 years and never realised those open A’s were there 👀
