2.
mmm. that is very sexy indeed. Very sexy. Same colour as my 4001...
Is yours a white gone cream (as they tend to)? The CS is the only Ric made in this colour (the photos are actually a bit washed out; it's yellower than it looks in the photos.).

  5.
What ???? Duff is a terrible player, an insult to Bassists everywhere If memory serves me right he was a guitar player who couldn't get a gig as a guitarist so started to play bass. Thas hardly does our beloved bottom end justice
Doesn't that go for half of us? Actually, I think Duff's ok. But then I tend to like quite twangy, guitaristic players (The Ox, Chris Squire, Joey DeMaio, Lemmy, Stan Clarke, Mark King, JJ Burnel etc etc). Although I also love Aston and Mr Wobble...(hey! a new bass-related Mr Man!)
  6.
Don't hate me, but I think Rutger Gunnarsson, the chap who played most of the ABBA bass lines, is a superb player... Go on, force yourself to listen to stuff like Money Money Money, Dancing Queen, One of Us... Some great melodic lines.
+1...one of my all-time faves (also best pop band ever IMHO). I'd also add Leigh Gorman of Bow Wow Wow. Very inventive and melodic, good chops, and utterly unique; to this day I've never heard anyone who sounds anything like him.
  7.
Not a Mach 1-3. I'll let go of some of the Pro basses to get one of these
Hey, if you let any Pro's go let me know (still trying to fulfill my Leigh Gorman GAS 20 years on)!
  8. Mine's number 199 of the run. It's a great bass; I just prefer my '73 4000 and my '72 4001 (my '73 4001 is currently with a man in San Francisco being refurbed... ). Looks like it may not be going anywhere anyway as I've had no interest yet despite posting it in several places (I'll try and get pics up later). I'm not going to let it go for less than I want (I don't need to sell it) so we'll see what happens.
  9. Hi I'm considering selling my '91 Rick 4001 CS Signature. It's one of the early ones with the longer headstock and thinner neck (actually the slimmest Ric neck I've played, and I've played dozens). Well played, several dings, scratches etc, some minor paintwear (the paintwork on these always seems to suffer somewhat if you actually play them). Comes without the silver case (never got it; bought used) and I don't have the original cert but do have a copy. I've had one before and am a member of the Rick Resource Forum; it's definitely legit. Great player, big sound but I'm loving my old Rics more. No actual need to sell though. I'm a newbie here so it may take some time for me to work out how to post pics; however I'm happy to send high res pics to anyone interested if you drop me your email. Can take pics on request if necessary. I'm looking at £1650; although it's got player wear and comes without the goodies it's still rare & collectible and is one of the earlier more accurate ones. I would however consider a deal (maybe a swap) on any early checkerbound Ric with the full width inlays as long as it's structurally sound. If it's got walnut headstock wings, even better. I may, repeat may, consider a deal + cash on a decent Jaydee MK (but would have to be a lightish one, under 10 lbs if such a thing exists; chronic back problems!) or Wal Pro 2, or possibly another Sei bass (but not a Jazz). Of course if anyone fancies throwing an Alembic Rogue or similar my way I'd consider that too. Would maybe consider a Pedulla MVP of some description but given that the going rate for those in the UK isn't great it would have to be accompanied by a decent amount of cash (no disrespect to Pedullas which are great, but I know from getting rid of my last one!). Just to add that I'm only considering this at the moment so could change my mind......
  10.
I have both Rumour and Spitfire basses, both custom built for me by Bernie, the Rumour in 2003 and the Spitfire 3 years later in 2006. As I already had the 'full on' circuit in the Rumour (with the HB pups) we decided to go a different route with the Spitfire and Bernie put Single Coils in it (disguised as HBs so visually the bass has the 'GB' look) and also fitted the 'In Line' jazz control layout which to my mind suits the visuals of the Spitfire better as well For me apart from the sonic differences (due to aforementioned pup differences) the biggest difference is the neck/balance/weight thing. The Rumour (being a thru neck) is both balanced perfectly and light. The Spitfire (by comparision) is slightly neck heavier as well as heavier overall. It also has an 'older school' sound (if that makes sense) although, due to the Rumour circuit, still has a massive array of tones on tap and definately has that 'GB' sound No need to go into the support/service side of things that Bernie offers as you'll already be familiar but if you're considering a Rumour I'd say 'go for it' as they are comfortable, light, ultra playable and sound the dogs - I'm sure Bernie would loan you one if you wanted a test drive! Failing that if you're ever in the North Devon area (unlikely I know!) you'd be more than welcome to come and have a widdle on mine! Cheers Dave
I see your avatar is a Jaydee. How do your GBs compare in the real world to your Jaydee (assuming you still have it?)

    Wal's...

So, having been out of the Wal loop for years, was Paul originally working with Pete? BTW, if anybody is ever selling a Pro, let me know.....
  12. Ah, I see. You replied to the wrong post; just seen the other. No probs! What are the chances of replying to a different thread mentioning Rics and ending up in my thread?
  13.
a £500 ric? WOW! I've seen trussrod covers go for nearly that! What sort of ric was it? Welcome (i'm new too and shy, but had to ask about this ric!)
Hi Dan......er, I can't see the quote you're referencing. Was it on my first post elsewhere? My Fireglo '72 with checkers, full width sparkle inlays and walnut headstock wings cost me £490 in a sale 1993; it had been in the shop for a year without selling at £680. It's probably worth 4 to 5 times that now. Not that I'll ever sell it, it's my favourite bass.
  14. Hi! I registered a while back but haven't got round to introducing myself (busy busy, busy...). I've been playing since 1980 (cripes..), and have mainly played original stuff (I'm a writer as well as bassist); as my mate Stu will tell you, I have a bit of a problem with playing more than a couple of covers in an evening (not technical I hasten to add). Over the years I've had 9 (?) Rickenbackers (currently got 4, 2 x'73s, 1x'72 and 1 '91 4001CS which I may be selling), 3 Sei basses (currently got 1), 2 Alembics (currently got 1), 2 Jaydees, a Wal Custom, 4 Statii, 4 Warwicks, a P, 2x Js, a Pedulla MVP, and numerous other bits and pieces which I can't remember at the moment. I try to get my hands on everything there is...just in case....and on my GAS list are Wood&Tronics, another Sei, more Rics/Alembics (always), Jerzy Drozd, CB (Bordwell), GW, another nice Jaydee, another Pedulla and a Wal Pro. And anything else that I see at any give moment, pretty much. Mainly play pop/rock, powerpop or indie/funk, although I happily Garrison out at home (or what passes for it ). Don't really get on with Fenders & Fender-type instruments but that's my fault not theirs. If anyone has one of the basses on my GAS list that I've not owned already I'd be interested to hear your opinion of it. Oh, fave bassists are Chris Squire, Lemmy, Glover, Hughes, Rutherford, Lee, DeMaio and Camp (big surprise eh?), The Ox, Leigh Gorman of Bow Wow Wow, JJ Burnel, Stu Zender, Stanley, Mr King, Jamerson, John McVie, Garrison & Gwizdala, Jah Wobble, Macca, JPJ, Phil Lynott, Mick Karn and doubtless countless others.

    Alembic

As others have posted, Alembics are very idiosyncratic. However, to try a single bass and attempt to judge the brand on that seems, with all due respect, rather strange. I play every bass I can get my hands on and have yet to play any single brand which is 100% fantastic. My favourite basses are Rickenbacker, Alembic & Sei, but I've played examples I hated from all three makers. FWIW, my Alembic is probably the best bass I've ever played, bar my 72 Ric (which is like part of me). And I've owned Wal, Jaydee, Status, Warwick, Fender, 3 Seis etc etc. I've also played several F Bass, Fodera, Overwater, Roscoe, Carl Thompson etc etc. Try some others. When you've played several, then make your mind up. It may be they just don't float your boat. Of course that doesn't make them less than "the dogs danglies", as "the dogs danglies" are a matter of preference. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's bad; it may be wonderful to someone else as everyone has different requirements. Generally speaking I don't like Fender or MusicMan much but they seem fairly popular!
