You looking for any trades on this one?

  2. Hi chaps

I've got terrible GAS for the black 'Ray currently for sale, and unfortunately need to sell this to buy it. It's a lovely Hot Rod Red Jaguar in excellent condition, and is absolutely cool-as. See pics for evidence. It has a ton of sounds available - just check out the Fender website or Youtube for details.

I might be nit-picking, but I've deliberately held the back of the bass up to the light in order to capture some very light swirlie scratches on the back. Under normal light you can't even see them (and they exist on all of my other basses, too), but I just wanted to be as accurate as possible in my description. Aside from that, it looks brand new.

The bass is 3 years old, never gigged, and has actually never even left the house.

The RRP on this bass is £699, but you can get them for £649 on the net. The last few advertised on here have been for £499 and £425.

Instead of the usual haggling, I'm going to set the firm price on this to £400 collected or meet up, or £425 posted. I'd really prefer a meet up, as I don't have a case for this, and could do without the hassle of packaging it all up, and praying that the courier doesn't play cricket with it (as has happened in the past!). I live just off j.12 of the M40 (near Gaydon), but can easily get over the Birmingham if this is easier. I also travel a reasonable amount with work, and often go to the office in Farnborough, so there's definitely scope for a meet up.

    Any questions, just ask.

    Cheers

Here you go - excuse the crappy pics. I'll throw in all the dust you see in the pics for free, and yes, I know the table and bench need re-varnishing. The missus reminds me every weekend :)

As you can see, it's absolutely as new. In fact, I just peeled off the plastic coating on the pickups. If I don't get my asking price for this (or a decent trade, and I'm happy to trade up with me adding cash for the right bass/amp/fx unit). I'll keep it and stick some flats on it.

Any other questions, let me know.

    Cheers

  4.
Is the icon series the american name for contemporary in the UK??
When I bought it in the States, the chap told me that the Icon was the US equivalent of the Contemporary.... Not sure if that was salesman talk, but from playing a Contemporary in a music shop in the UK, they looked and played identically....

  5. I bought this during a business trip to the US late last year. One of those "seemed like a good idea at the time" impulse buys. Apart from getting it out of the (nice, fittted, extra cost!) hard case for about an hour, I've really never used this.

It's a US-only model, but I've seen a couple of UK retailers advertising them as "1 of only 100 in the UK", so I guess they might be filtering through to the UK.

I paid $429 plus $130 for the case at a time of really crappy exchange rates, typically.

I'm asking £249 plus £20 towards courier costs for this. Or, if you're in the Warwick / Solihull / Farnborough area, we can probably meet up FOC.

Pics are now in post 10 below!

On the trade front, try me with anything remotely musical (or even, non musical!).

    Cheers

  6.
That's an Epiphone ET-280, built by Matsumoku in Japan around 1975. This one looks like a great car boot find, it appears to be all original apart from missing a bridge cover, which is usual.

These come up on Ebay every so often & probably would go for between £150 - £200 on there. I'd recommend leaving it stock - these are getting quite collectable & "upgrading" components (tempting as it might be) will adversely affect its future value.

Yeah, that's definitely the one. Just found the 1974 Epiphone catalogue online, and it's shown on there: -

  7.
I think if I did have any criticism of my ric is that it might be 'over-finished' if that's not too much of an oxymoron. A few coats of paint less on the neck might make it a bit less sticky in a sweaty pub environment. Could just sand it down I guess. A roadie I once chatted with was convinced that it was really the amount of paint that went on the rics that gave them their unique tone. Think he was pulling my leg though :) I do know that whenever I take it to open jam sessions everyone wants to play it, they do seem to carry a mystique. One player was almost teary eyed when he gave it back to me as he'd been playing for years, always wanted to play a ric and never got chance so I'd fulfilled a little dream for him. As long as they look sensible I'm OK with others playing my ric these days though I was a bit protective in its early years. It passed through a few hands at the Nottm bash bass a few months back and genrally got a thumbs up...

Bloody hell - did you have to post that photo? I've been trying to put off buying a Jetglo, but seeing yours here has just caused me to start Googling for stockists....

  8.
I used to love Musical exchange, I could spend a day there, it always felt like they had a couple of hundred basses there but it was probably less.
If you're driving down the M40 it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull off on the B452 at Ealing and pop into Peter Cooks Guitar world, they only have about 15 basses on display but have loads on theie stock list - they just fetch it for you from the warehouse, nice people and open to haggling.
I always find Denmark st is a bit of a let down.
    Good luck
I spent many a Saturday in Musical Exchanges... I got my first bass from there (Westone Thunder 1, in 1984), my Jetglo 4001 (which stupidly I sold at the age of 17 to fund a holiday with my mates and have regretted ever since), my 70's Precision (sold here), and my first double bass. And you're absolutely right, it did seem like there were hundreds of basses you could just grab, sit down and have a play with. Happy days...

Thanks for the heads-up re:Peter Cooks - just had a look on their website and that looks like the kind of place I'm looking for.

  9. Thanks for all the replies. I think I might plan a visit to PMT (great name, whoever thought that would be a good idea? :)) and Reverb over the next couple of weeks. However, sounds like it'll have to be Denmark Street to satisfy the mooching requirements, especially as it's only £18 on the train on a Saturday.

    Oh, and doctor_of_the_bass - 63 basses? 63 BASSES? That's not an interest, that's a disease

  10. Hi all

I feel the need to spend a day mooching round guitar shops, but haven't a clue what's on offer any more. In the old days, Musical Exchanges in Birmingham used to be a fantastic place to spend a day, full of loads of second hand kit, as well as brand new stuff. The Bass Centre was also just around the corner. However, I know they've both closed down (and changed hands several times), so I don't have a clue where to look these days.

I've looked on t'internet, and can't find much in the way of help, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Incidentally, I live about 45 mins from Birmingham, so it's probably not too much more of an effort to head to London on the train, and maybe look there, so any recommendations of good shops to check out in London would also be appreciated. I've never done the Denmark Street thing, so maybe that's an option?

I'm not looking for anything in particular (although maybe a Jetglo Rickky if I see one!), but I'd like to find somewhere with a decent selection of 2nd hand stuff.

    Thanks for any suggestions....

    Mark.

  11.
Don't be so sure!! Mwahahaha!!

Lovely to meet you mate - seems we could have chatted all evening! Maybe I will sell the Epiphone and spend it on an AP Royal Oak Offshore from TZ!
Great to meet you, too. Next time, we'll make it the pub instead of Tescos cafe....

I hate to break this to you, but the only way you're going to get an AP Royal Oak via the Episphone is to put it through the window of your nearest high end jewellers!

Hope this raises a few quid for BassChat (and equally, I hope it finally ends up in Tayste_2000's hands).

    Cheers

  12.
Thanks . . . I think its the contemporary that I should be contemplating ! . . . sounds like the better option ?
    :)
If you are interested in the Icon, I've got one that I bought back from the US on a business trip 2 months ago. It was one of those "blimey, that looks nice" moments in Guitar Center, which I regretted as soon as the credit card bill arrived! I paid extra for the fitted case too.

Let me know if you're interested.

    Cheers

  13.
Thanks, I was after a free one in return for a review :)
Tell you what, I could easily make 300 dollars worth of recommendations to make your website work better/sell more boxes/get you more gigs if you fancy an exchange

I know Si and trust his judgement. I'd order one on the strength of him saying it's a decent bass.
