1. Foxton's the reason I first played bass. I love his stuff - always lots going on, but most importantly, the bassline always fitted the song. Scrimped and saved when I was a kid to buy a jetglo Ric like the one he used on the Going Underground video. I can remember being horrified that I actually didn't sound exactly like him when I plugged it in, too :)

Having been a fan since I was a kid, I think I can play *most* of his basslines.

To add to the list of more obscure tracks with nice bass lines above: -

All Mod Cons
David Watts
Mr Clean
In the Crowd
Butterfly Collector
The Planner's Dream Goes Wrong

To be honest, it's hard to find a Jam album without a couple of corking bass lines on!

2.
£835 for the basic Pbass according to the WEBSITE, not sure on the JJB model, i'm sure someone on here has one though, but i would think it would be round about the same as the custom P bass's, maybe slightly more

Edit: Heres a THREAD about it
Cheers - I missed the prices on the bottom of the spec page.

3. Hi all

I'm on the lookout for an older P bass, so this one has to go. It's a 1997/98 USA model, which I bought a couple of years ago from OldGit on here. It's butterscotch in colour (or "custard" as OG called it!), and has a rosewood fretboard. It's now got a white scratchplate on (I noticed that the tort one had a small piece by the jack missing when I took the pics yesterday, so swapped it back for the original white one as you can see in the last couple of pics). Last year, I got a SD Quarterpounders professionally fitted, which has provided a better range of sounds, and I've also got the original Fender ones, too, which will be included with the sale. Comes with a good quality locking Fender hardcase, as shown in the pics. Oh, and I've just put some fresh Rotosound flats on it a week ago, too.

One small issue is the marking at the back of the neck. I've taken a macro photo of this, to highlight it. It was like this when I bought it, and absolutely doesn't get in the way when playing, but I wanted to highlight it anyway. It should be stressed that this is cosmetic marking, and is just on the surface, and looks a whole lot worse in the photos, anyway!

From seeking advice on here, I'm told that £550 is about right for this (in reality, with the pickups and hardcase, it should be closer to £600). Straight sale would be great, as would a part-ex against an older P bass (or poss. a Jetglo Ric). If anyone has any nice trades, let me know.

Cheers

4.
I'd keep it man unless you really aren't playing it. That's a fine bass, as nice as P basses come.
I know, I know... I should really keep it. However, I've never really taken to this one (for a reason I can't put my finger on) and it's all been made worse by me playing FunkMunkey's '69 P bass a week or two ago. I'm now in love (or obsessed!) with that and want to try to get something a little more vintage.

It actually looks great with the white scratchplate on, too...

5.
+1 - chuck the broken one in the bin.

You probably won't get anything extra with the basslines pup installed, so it might be worthwhile to put the original back in as well & sell the quarter pounder separately
Yep, I've put the original pickguard back on now - it's actually white (not black like I thought it was), and looks ace!

Might well stick this on the For Sale section in the next day or two - sounds like £500 - £600 is the going rate...

Cheers

6.
I'd estimate £5-600 for a straight sale. Lovely bass by the way!
Thanks. You know, it really is a lovely bass. OldGit told me it was a lovely bass. Funkmunky played it and said it was a lovely bass. SO WHY THE HELL DON'T I GET ON WITH IT? Aaaaarggggghhh!

7. Hi all

Thinking of selling my P bass. It's a 1997/98 USA model, which I bought a couple of years ago from OldGit on here. It's butterscotch in colour (or "custard" as OG called it!), and has a rosewood fretboard. It's got a tort scratchplate on (with a small part which just bloody snapped off as I was unplugging it to take pics!). I've got the small snapped-off bit, as well as the original black scratchplate, too, which will be included. Last year, I got a SD Quarterpounders professionally fitted, which has provided a better range of sounds, and I've also got the original Fender ones, too, which will be included. Comes with a Fender hardcase, as shown in the pics.

I'm thinking of listing this in the For Sale section (or trade against a vintage P Bass or something else "nice"), but I have absolutely no idea what it's worth. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Oh, and no "Hmm, it's worth about £50, I'll take it off your hands" type posts - I may look stupid, but I'm not quite that dumb. Well, maybe, but you know what I mean :)

Cheers

8.
I've played a 73 P for a short while. My 62 AV Re-Issue is truly a great P bass, others have said it's the best P they've played too.

Personally I'd find a good AV in a shop and pay more.

Sorry I can't offer a more direct comparison.

Under a grand is good, is that including duty and VAT?
Thanks for the reply - I know it's always down to personal preference at the end of the day, but just wanted a general opinion...

The grand is based upon me picking one up in the US. I'm supposed to be off there soon with work, and we also have a Christmas trip to Boston planned...

9. Hi

I accept that there are good and bad examples of both 'real' vintage and brand new basses, but generally my question is this: -

Since playing Funkmunky's beautiful '69/'70 P bass, I'm rapidly becoming obsessed with finding something very similar (or steal his, whichever's easiest :)).

My question is, how well do the new Vintage series P basses stack up against the real thing? I've been looking at the '62 re-issue, which I could get from the US for just under a grand. Is there a big difference? I know it's all down to personal preference, and it's probably a stupid question, but some thoughts from anyone who has played or owned both an old P bass and one of the new reissues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

10. Thanks chaps. I been in GC before (albeit in Grand Rapids when I was there on business), and loved it. Came back with a set of pickups for me P bass and a Hofner Icon! Glad to see that there's one in Boston, too, so will make a trip into there.

That Daddy's place looks great, too, but a little out of the way. I somehow doubt that Mrs Tredders will share my enthusiasm for traipsing around guitar shops....!

11. Wow, so many to chose from. Here's a random selection (from looking at the "Most Recently Played" section of my iTunes: -

Rescue Me - Fontella Bass
Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
Bernadette - Four Tops
Eton Rifles / Funeral Pyre / Tubestation / Malice - The Jam (in fact, pretty much any Jam song!)
Substitute / Won't Get Fooled Again / The Real Me - The Who
La Femme d'Argent - Air
Barbarism Begins At Home - Smiths
Bed's Too Big Without You - Police
