1. I have the Mag 300 Evo II head and 2x10 cab, and think it's great. The rehearsal room I use has a ABM 300 through an Ampeg 8x10. I took my head along and honestly noticed little difference between the mag and ABM. The 2x10 cab is a bit on the heavy side though.

  2. High quality multi effects, easy to use - as simple as a few stompboxes. To me, the highlight is the distortion section. Models some well known pedals pretty well, and allows you mix with your clean sound.

It's about 3 years old, but is in good condition - maybe a few minor chips in the paint etc.

Recently, I've only been using the tuner and compressor (both of which are excellent!), so it makes more sense for me to use individual pedals. I've already bought a new compressor, so I need some cash for this ASAP to get forgiveness from my good lady.

£120 delivered within the UK, or knock a tenner off for pickup in Airdrie (near Glasgow). Can also deliver locally.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  3. I have Peavey Ampkit for my iPad, and have both the available bass amps - Ashdown ABM 900 and Trace Elliot 1215.
I don't have any problems with latency whatsoever, but I do find it a bit noisy, especially when you add some dirt. It does have a noise gate which does a decent job.

I've never used it live, but often use it to practice. It's a bit more appropriate at midnight than 300 watts....

There's a large choice of effects to choose from - they're typically modelled on well known pedals. They only cost a couple of quid each too. For example, the Octapuss (Boss OC-2) is £2.99. At the very least, it lets you demo effects for the price of a happy meal!

I'd also recommend the free version of the app ahead of the paid version. The only difference is that some amps and pedals are bundled - but seems guitar rather than bass oriented. Better spending your cash buying the amp models and effects you actually want.

If you already have an iPad, it's worth spending £20-£30 on the guitar interface plus £4 for the Ashdown amp model and whatever effects you want.

thanks for the info, I've just measured my 2001 MIM and they are different sizes (now happier) got the info below from talkbass which is quite interesting and may be of help to others with MIM Jazz's.

Yes, seems that the different pickup size change (only) occurred in 2001 (with the same body style). But MOST of those pickups were NOT noise cancelling, just different sizes, that is to say the pups were NOT reverse wound/reverse polarity (RWRP) in relation to each other and still have flat pole pieces. So turning the volumes on both all the way up did NOT cancel hum.

Since 2004/2005, the pickups were not only the appropriate (different) sizes, they have the raised pole pieces under the A and D strings, indicating they are the newer noise cancelling pickups, although not technically reverse wound/reverse polarity (RWRP). Turn both volumes all the way up and they cancel noise AND cause a midrange "scoop" due to frequency cancellation of the mids (called phase cancellation in physics), not due to true electronic hum cancellation--think of it as 2 waves of water coming together, one peaked and one troughed, that cancel each other out. This is due to the distance between the pickups, and not due to RWRP. Technically, he said you can also get this by setting both volumes at identical settings anywhere in the range, but that is almost impossible to do, so just crank 'em up and control the volume with your amp.

You CAN find Fender Mexican / MIM jazz basses from as far back as 2001 that have the raised poles, but they are hit and miss. As with any assembly plant, different runs on different assembly lines used different stock as it was available. Although what I said above is the "official" Fender line, there were certainly times when the "stock" pickups were unavailable and the "improved" ones used, even as far back as 2001 when they made the initial change to different sizes but not noise cancelling. Then as shipments of the "stock" pickups were available, they'd change back for a bit to use up the old ones, then back again to the new ones. Fender "tech-dude" contends that if most MIM jazz basses from the 2001 era that have the raised poles on different sized pickups are probably after-market replacements (i.e. MIA pickups or Fender Custom 60s, etc.) installed by the owner and later resold.

So, in a nutshell, from 2001-2004, you could have a MIM bass with
    a) 2 pickups that are the same size with flat poles -- i.e. 2 "neck pickups" in the neck and bridge position with minimal, if any, noise cancellation
    B) 2 pickups of different size with flat poles -- i.e. standard sized pickups, but not true noise cancelling at full volume (similar to (a))
    c) 2 pickups of different size with raised poles -- i.e. standard sized pickups that ARE noise cancelling (with mid-range scoop desired by many jazz players) when both volumes turned all the way up.

As you move away from 2001 towards 2004/2005, you move from (a) to (B) to (c). Mostly (a) to (B) occurred during the 2001 model year as the body routs were made almost immediately. Then by 2004/2005, everyone was made with (c).
My MIM Jazz is from 2002 and has RWRP pickups of different sizes, with raised A&D pole pieces. I had no idea of the differences when I bought it new, but I did try several different Jazzes and this one was simply head and shoulders above the rest - both in sound and feel. I asked the salesman what the difference was (except the colour!), as they were all MIM Jazz Basses at the same price. His response was 'it's all in how they're set up'.

I knew that older JBs didn't have different sized pickups, but the rest of this is news to me - really good info. I've always consider myself fortunate to have picked the bass I did ten years ago - (it's still my main bass today and won't be parted with!), and now I know at least part of the reason why I liked it.

  5. Hi,

I wonder if someone could help me. I have a six outlet PSU powering all pedals. There is a terrible hissing noise, which I've narrowed down to my Ashdown Drive Plus pedal.

Ashdown connected to PSU, all other pedals powered by battery - no noise

All other pedals connected to PSU, Ashdown powered by battery - no noise

Ashdown and any other pedal connected to PSU - very hissy.
This isn't just the usual hum you get when using pedals with a PSU - it's very loud. I've also tried the pedals in different orders, connecting to different outlets on the PSU, but the hissing remains - except in the scenarios described above. I've tried two basses (Fender Jazz and Ibanez ATK) and several cables - it makes no difference.

I can just run the Ashdown on batteries, but if anyone has any suggestions how I can resolve this, I'd appreciate it!.

    Thanks,

    George

  6. Ok - I really need this gone ASAP or my missus is going to kill me! We don't have space for two bass amps apparently.

Cash isn't a huge issue - I'd rather see it go to a good home than take it to Cash Converters!

Price dropped to £75, or will happily swap for pedals - I need a tuner & compressor, but anything considered.
Set of decent Jazz Bass pick-ups or something like that might also do the trick

  7. I love my 10 year old Fender Jazz, almost like an extension of myself! Can't beat the slim neck, low action and clear tone. Often consider changing the pickups for something with a little more bottom end, but never seen it through, scared I'll lose the tone I love.

Also have an active Ibanez which I like sometimes, but is out of favour at the moment, just a bit too ballsy for what I'm doing just now. I can't seen to cut through the mix with this one without cranking up loud, and ends up sounding too muddy.

    (Edit to fix typos)

  8. Great little amp! 120 Watts, 1 x 12 Speaker, dual channel.
Small enough for home practice, but also big enough for band rehearsals and smaller gigs. For bigger gigs, it's ideal as an on-stage monitor - especially given it's wedge shape and DI out.

    Full description here: http://www.behringer...cts/BX1200.aspx

I've just bought myself something a bit bigger, so I need to get rid of this to make some space. Or I could end in the deep stuff with the missus.....

The amp is in perfect working condition, except from the following minor problems:

    1. Handle on top slightly mis-shaped
    2. 'Ultrabass' effect won't switch on (basically an octaver)

It's a few years old, but is in great condition considering it's age.

I'm looking for £100 cash, though I'd consider swaps music gear. Particularly interested in decent bass effects pedals - but I'm open to suggestions (basses, speaker cabs, guitars, keyboards - what do you have?).

I'm near Glasgow and can deliver within reason. Given the relatively large size and low value of this, I don't think it's worth anyone's time paying to courier this.

Any questions, just ask and I'll respond ASAP.

  9. Hi Bert & Scojack

Yeah, I do like the Ashdown Drive Plus. I like using it for a bit of extra bite, as opposed to all out fuzz (which isn't really my cup of tea!). I find it pretty versatile as it has separate high & low drive controls.

Also, upgraded my amp sooner than expected - bought myself an Ashdown Mag 300 Evo II head and 2 x 10 cab to go with it. I'm going to try to flog the old Behringer in the 'For Sale' section.

    George
