This was my first proper long scale bass back in the very early 70's....my Mother killed it by leaning it up against a radiator....had a neck like a long bow after that and totally unusable! This one looks in lovely condition though..

Eq flat all the way, when I used the amp at gigs and rehearsals..
It's inherent tone is pretty much spot on, no matter what bass I used it with.
I generally preferred to have the drive switch in all the time as I like the extra colouration it gives to the sound.
I don't use the drive switch but I'm going to experiment with it. Thanks.

Yeah, never touch it.
It basically reduces the mids the more the contour control is wound on.

Everything flat for me too - I just turn the input gain up until it starts to get spicy. It sounds mint.
With the contour off?

Default is 12 o'clock for bass & treble and contour all the way off then add contour as and when needed. BUT, the whole point about these amps is that you'd struggle to get bad sound out of them.
My gig basses are Andy Rogers s-s 3-pickup passive custom builds with flats so that won't help you much I guess.
You're absolutely right, these amps sound so good without much tweaking. I usually set the bass and treble around 11 0'clock and have the contour set at around 7-8 o'clock...it simply hits the spot for me using a MM bass.

Just echoing all the positive comments about these. I love mine, especially the bass/treble/contour arrangement. GLWTS
Out of interest, what settings do you use and with what bass? Cheers Steve

Brought back some fond memories of this little combo when l was with a Meatloaf tribute band using a Trace stack and playing with a loud drummer......kept up no problem and sounded really good too!

I absolutely love mine, the R400 is the best amp l have ever played through. The new owner will not be disappointed.

Another message from the aforementioned gentleman... bearing in mind I've made no contact with him since he sent his last message. His version of events is spectacularly skewed, we must have been in different dimensions or he had taken a very large dose of something 'special' on his journey home that day. Clearly he is after an arguement. He'll not get one.
I'm afraid thats what happens when Snow White has sex with Dopey!

This is a top quality bass, both in build quality and tone, it sounds phenomenal. Excellent condition apart from a tiny ding at the back of the strap button at the bottom of the bass. Can barely be seen up close.
I have upgraded the bass with the following - Norstrand NP4a pickups/CTS pots/Switchcraft jack/WD Black 3 ply scratch plate/tug bar.
Set up by the man himself...Mr Jon Shuker and is very easy to play all up the fretboard. Ernie Ball Super Slinky 45/60/80/100 strings fitted.
Sorry I don't have the original parts as I really didn't intend selling this bass.
Comes with the original fender gig bag in great condition.
Absolutely any trial welcome. Sorry no trades thanks.
New central heating boiler has forced the unfortunate sale.
I really don't want to courier this bass due to no packaging/bad experience, so pick up preferred but would drive to meet up with petrol cost.
Thanks for looking.

I had that once, I explained it to eBay, they reviewed it, the waived the selling fee when I relisted the item.
Thanks binky, I'll try that.

Had a guy recently who bought my hifi speakers but didn't pay...I lost out on the 80% sellers charge and ended up selling to someone else and payed the full sellers charge. There are some proper tossers/chancers/idiots on ebay!!

The HH was so heavy it induced medical injuries just by looking at it, in at least 3 of the bass players present! Eh @cd_david 🤒
I had one back in the early 80's and can testify to that. But because of the delays and backlog, lm still waiting for the operation!

I used to have an American made pro 3 with the blue lettering for years and it was a great amp. For some reason some bassist found it underpowered but as long as you kicked in the eq section l never had a problem. As someone mentioned, the pre amp is really good.
Is it worth having it repaired?....its worth having it looked at tbh.

Such a shame mate, although l'm pretty good at repairing things till they're broke😕

Bass players were real men back in the Trace Elliot days. That 8x10 combo weighed 14 and a half stone. 😮
Quite right too......and most physio's/ osteopaths were driving around in porches and ferrari's!

Loved seeing these old vintage amps/combos. I first started out with a Dallas Arbiter Slider amp which was really hopeless for bass guitar! Fortunately l left school, got a good job and bought the heavy powerful stuff that would murder my back these days. Glwts mate.

I didn't think they were interchangeable?
I have 2 x super compacts mk3's and I asked Alex if I could swap my silver fronts for metals ones and he said they weren't designed to do that.
Maybe its different on various models?
My bad....they aren't metal but black cloth........I get it now.
