The colours I have most trouble matching are lake placid blue and Pelham blue so I haven't found anything I'm really happy with for my LPB Squier bass IV or Gibson thunderbird non-reverse in faded pelham blue. I'm currently using a black stretchy comfort strapp with the thunderbird.

I'm surprised the Perri's one doesn't match your Thunderbird. The Jack Casady is Faded Pelham Blue and it's almost bang on. Admittedly FPB does appear different colours in different lights but it's still close.

Just goes to show how different instrument colours are from different manufacturers, even when they're called the same thing.

  2. I have the blue Perri's strap on my Pelham blue Jack Casady.

The blue against blue, and sheepskin against cream plastics couldn't match better if it had been designed for this bass. Even the tan suede rear is a nod to the browns of the knobs and natural woods.

I’ve not really been present at that many auditions, only poor one I remember was a guy who turned up and had learned most of the songs in the wrong key, no idea which versions he’d listened to.

Don't feel bad... he joined our band! 😁

    Good tune!
I don’t remember their bassist Graham Knight using a Dano though - thought it was more often either a Jazz

    or a Rick?
I was in a group that supported Marmalade in the late 70’s, a great band and really nice guys. Often

    overlooked / underrated IMO.

To be honest I don't know a lot of the bands output (something I need to rectify) but any time I've seen a video of this song it's been a Dano, I think.

    Maybe not then.

I honestly think that if there had to be only one model of bass guitar then it should be a Fender Jazz neck on a Fender Precision body. Probably why I like the Sterling RAY4 so much, as it's pretty much a Jazz neck on the body of something descended from Leo's attempt at a "better Precision than a Precision". I even prefer the RAY4 to the more upmarket RAY34, which definitely felt like a better quality bass (and on a par with the US made Stingrays I've owned) but with a neck that wasn't so easy to move around on.

It's hard to disagree with this.

  6. Just to add to this thread.

I'm always saying on here that a Longhorns looks are deceiving, it looks like a toy, but then you plug it in and are blown away, every time.

Well, I was relearning some tunes using Amazon Music and random linked songs continue when your chosen one finishes. A song came on and I was instantly WOW, what a bass tone.

Then I recalled the bass player was usually seen with a Longhorn, so I assume that's what's on the recording.

Enjoy a huge grinding bass tone. 😎

  7. Just seen this on Fezbok.

One of, if not the, sexiest bass ever made!

The last 4005, the Shaftesbury faker, was getting on for £5k wasn't it?

I'm guessing these will be similar.

I'm more than happy with the HW in my avatar. Genuinely can't see the Rick being any better.

  8. Bass players and producers are fine, can't vouch for the rest of the band.

  9. Hey all.

I have another quirky bass to give some TLC. A 1978 USA SD Curlee.

Firstly, thanks to @Velarianfor picking this up from the seller and packaging it ready for the courier for me. Thank you.

I've had a little play today and I think it has the ability to be a very nice bass.

It has issues but it is 46 years old and completely original so can be forgiven.

The bad points, frets very worn (so someone played it lots) crackly jack and tone doesn't work, the action is a little high and the trussrods are a known problem, although I haven't tried to adjust it yet, and it's cosmetically tired.

The good points, brass Grover tuners, brass nut, brass bridge, brass covers on the back (do you see a brass theme here? 😁), Dimarzio Model P pickup with series/parallel switching and Dimarzio pots.

Unconventional build but a very solid, substantial build. Mahogany body with a three piece maple bolt on neck that runs almost the entire length of the body, so a kind of neck through/bolt on hybrid. Frets are fitted directly into the neck with no fretboard.

It sounds really good in series, clanky as the pickup is close to the bridge, but still thick and powerful, kind of like a Rickenbacker, parallel sounds a little weak but could be useful.

The paint is wearing its battle scars with pride, chips, digs, scratches and checking.

Not yet decided how far I'll go in cleaning it up, time will tell.

It came in an old but substantial flightcase which was a bonus.

  10. It's not a Yamaha BB but it's probably of interest here as the pickup and electrics are based on his BB1200S.

Eastwood have just released the Hooky Viking Pro, based on his Eccleshall hollow body with the BB electrics.

Pretty pricey when compared to the Jack Casady or similar.

Definitely interesting though with a reverse P and active electrics.
