1.
* Standard R 'n' B groove * Ooh Baby I got love gravy And I don't mean maybe Ooh Yeah! Gonna foam at the mouth Like a dog with rabies You gonna have my babies, girl Then your norks will go south. Your body so shapely You makin' me capely - But there's no such word as 'capely', ooh yeah. * Continue in similar vein until music business becomes financially and morally bankrupt * - Oh, wait...
"Even though there is no such word as capely maybe, you and me, baby could use it repetitively, until the general public see That is has made it's way into the dictionary, oh yeah!"
 2.
I'm assuming you are being serious because you've been a gobsh*te in the past on similar subjects, so I am happy to say that your pronouncement is absolute bollocks.
HAHA! I don't think all pop is crap. There's a lot i wouldn't listen to, and some that i would. If i wanted to make a hit pop song, it would be probably just for fun, and money, and not really for the love of it. But it's all down to personal preference. Nobody can ever say that a certain type of music really is crap, because that's just really confirming to other musicians that you are an idiot.
 3.
You should start a separate thread with that... and stand back with a bowl of popcorn to watch the fireworks
haha! Maybe i will.
 4. Baby, Gravy, Maybe, Rabies, shapely, capely... hmm... "Baby, gravy, maybe? OOOHH, Baby, Gravy Maybe? OOOHH" Justin Bieber would be so much better if he sang about gravy.
 5.
But what about lyrics? The chord progressions are the easy bit, the words and arrangement are the killers.
Yup, but i just listened to "Otherside" by RHCP and sang the "Double rainbow all the way across the sky" song over the top of it. Personally, i don't think i could write lyrics that would be accessible at all. But if you have a good place to start, and are a bit of a wordsmith, it probably wouldn't be too difficult.
 6.
You forgot E in there too So many pop songs are in the key of E major!
But F isn't in the key of E Major, so therefore the pretty standard FGAC progression isn't in the key of E Major. I wonder why it is so common? Is it just nice to hear?
 7.
Realistically, do you think you could? It's something I am going to try over the next few months, write what I think are three commercial songs, and sign up to TAXI and see what happens, just for fun
Don't most pop songs just stick to a common progression using F G A and C? I don't think i would have the skills or knowledge to produce it, But i could probably write a progression and bassline for it. So no, i couldn't write and produce a pop song entirely by myself.
 8. It's both. I want to record my music, and also learn how to record. It's a project with many sides to it for me. If it goes well, and i get a bit of a portfolio built up, then it might get me into uni, which as many will know, has been my goal for a good while. That isn't necessarily the motivation behind it, but it would be a good byproduct.
 9.
I wouldn't be a guinea pig... I'd get someone who has made all the design moves already. A custom bass is a lottery at the best of times as you never know exactly how it will sound until you plug it in.. so you don't want to add to that if the wood cominations and joints are not a well-trodden route fo the builder.
I would imagine building an acoustic is infinitely harder than building an electric, and this guy builds acoustics for a living.
 10.
Oh, I agree entirely! When I mention a specific wood (maple, ash) is because I like the look of it, nothing else. One of my favourite basses is made of plywood (my red Squier). I'm not precious about "tonewoods" in electric instruments.
I've come to think that the wood choice makes very little difference in electric instruments. Rosewood doesn't sound warmer than maple on a fretboard, they sound the same. The most important parts of an electric instrument are the pickups, the bridge and the nut. Tonewoods are a bunch of flim-flam i think.
 11. The electric guitar mic be a slightly driven sound, because it would really only be used for solos.
 12. You would record electric guitar in the same way, wouldn't you?
 13.
If you add up your monthly shopping bill and send me 15 percent of that amount you can pretend you have been there!
What's 15% of £6.36?
 14.
I think the best advice given here so far is keep it simple. For example one of the most enlightening moments I had when recording was realising that two mics on a drum kit in the right place sound better than ten mics that arent absolutely perfect. Four mics is now my personal favourite if I can. It makes the kit sound incredibly real, and still really powerful. More mics tend to dilute that reality, and more oftne than not introduce phase issues that are very hard if not impossible to sort out. Dont go for more than a DI and a mic on the bass, do get a 2 channel reasonable (ie the very best you can afford) 2 channel interface. WIth which you will be able to record you bass and make it sound great. You dont need a mixer, and a decent recording mixer is going to stretch your budget to breaking point (because they cost stupid money). Spend the money on the interface instead. You really only need two channels, the best of which are the Babyface or the Apogee Duet, MOTU are good (next tier down lets say), M-Audio have done usable interfaces (nothing spectacular). If you can the Steinberg UR824 is good enough to record a live album with according to Michael Wagner from Wireworld studios ( and he is extremely well regarded in the industry) - actually he used 3 of them but the point is they are good enough, it will give you 8 channels off the bat and you could go mad as a duck thinkin up complicated ways to record your bass . If you got one of those you would be able to ditch the DI too as it has instrument level inputs. Its overkill in a lot of ways for what you need, but its stupidly good kit for the cash. A lot of ways to skin this particular cat, mixers arent in any of them that are worth while in my opinion....
Cheers! looking at the Apogee Duet 2 now. Seems like a serious piece of kit! My imagination just overtakes my skills sometimes But rest assured, after a while, i'm sure i'll be doing all the stupid things i shouldn't be in the interest of experimentation. And just as a side note- If i do this well, it could possibly even get me in to uni. It's definitely worth spending the money on in my eyes. (just not studio mixer money )
 15.
In short no. It's a live mixer by the look of it. No direct outs, no tape ins, not suitable for recording properly. Why are you determined to fight the advice of the people on here so hard? It's good advice from experienced people who have been there and done that and are entitled yo the T-shirt.
I'm sorry? what advice am i fighting? i'm getting the DI box, as you recommended. I'm micing the bass cab as you suggested. I don't understand what advice i'm fighting. I know you have an absolute ton of experience, and that is why i asked, and i had hoped from a response from you in particular when i posted, Simon. (not that i don't value the advice from others, i do). I'm an absolute novice remember.
 16. recording. I said earlier in the thread that i wanted to get a mixer, nothing fancy, just something to do, but i was told not to even bother spending my money on something like a behringer xenyx.
 17. Nobody is ripping off the Fender designs. It was patented, and i believe the patent has expired now, meaning that it's public knowledge, and they can't open a lawsuit against another company because they are "Stealing their designs". That being said, that IS NOT what this thread is about. Funny how you can start a well meant thread for those interested in a band or artist, and it turns into an argument about bloody copying basses!
The big S on the top of the headstock suggests it's a Sarwick. Or a Spector...
I had been awake for over 20 hours at the time, i think i was lucky to even notice it had been uploaded and see that the rig is different! Although i do hear he has a few sarwick's that he uses sometimes
 18.
To be fair, it does include theory and technique videos. Some of them are pretty awful (the one on syncopation springs to mind) but a lot of them are at least as good as the videos on YouTube that many people work from anyway. Again, I don't think it's a one-stop solution, but it's a much better tool than I originally expected.
That's true, but it won't ever tell you if what you are doing is good or bad, other than the notes you are playing. Bad positioning, bad chord shapes, bad right hand technique, it won't tell you if you are doing it wrong. I don't like YouTube lessons eater for the same reason. If you're going to learn an instrument, get a teacher and do it properly.
 19.
Yep a Spector. The design that Warwick totally ripped off for their Streamers Nice trousers by the way!
That's what threw me off! it's pretty similar, but when i looked at the fancy inlays and headstock, i realised my mistake. Cheers, i got them at Aldi... oh, you mean Flea? my apologies.
 20.
The bass is a Spector.
Yes! that makes sense!
 21. I'm actually not so sure now that it is a Warwick.
 22. It's Flea in 89, with a Warwick, and an Ampeg amp and cab. I've never heard or seen him with that rig. Although i do wonder if he uses Ampeg gear for the studio? 89 seemed to be a time when he was trying out a lot of different gear. He did use a Wal bass and an Alembic epic bass on BSSM and OHM respectively, along with his stingray on some tracks within a couple of years of this gig. Quite curious if you ask me. Maybe it was just a notion that took him, like when he was using Acoustic amps for a few months in 2011. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtT04QYIxVo
 23. You're absolutely certain the batter hasn't leaked? My first action would be the change the battery, and in the process of doing that, do all of the above. I wouldn't take the chance which a preamp, especially if i was relying on it for a gig.
 24.
I cant understand why anyone shops at Waitrose? You can burn money at home for free without even driving there!
Because you need to shop somewhere where other people speak like they have a mouth full of marbles i suppose? I've never set foot in a waitrose. We don't have them here.
 25.
waistcosts!
Ok then, a couple of general rules about waistcosts. 1- The bigger the waist, the cheaper they are (speaking in terms of those who might sell themselves for money) 2- The bigger the waist, the more they will cost (speaking in terms of a night out, particularly in a restaurant) There's your waistcosts for you.
