Sorry but i am gonna disagree with this. It should be a lot different getting lessons from someone who is primarily a bass player than someone who is primarily a guitarist. The role of bass in any ensemble/band/group whatever you want to call it is very different to that of a guitar and in some ways the teacher should convey that whole approach throughout the teaching rather than just a few licks that sound good on bass and guitar. You might be lucky but i would think you would be better off finding a decent bass teacher who is also a bass player.
you can disagree all you like, because somebody learned guitar first doesn't mean that they aren't also as good on bass, or maybe even better. The point is, and we have already established this, music teachers, especially bass teachers, normally play more than just bass, because teaching bass on it's own does not make enough money. my guitar teacher was a drummer for many years before he was a guitarist, that doesn't say anything about his guitar ability at all. I think i know what you are thinking, - "loads of guitarists only think they can play bass" and i agree, but then, loads of guitarists can actually play the bass.

maybe getting a lesson from a guitarist isn't such a bad thing? i know some guitarists that are really good on bass, and they well tell you if you are picking up bad habits from not getting proper lessons.
Thanks dude. It does do you good to realise where your weaknesses are and even a few lessons should do that. I recommend learning to do your major scales via the circle of fifths - helps with recognising key signatures too. I run round the scales in order in my head if I can't sleep You can easily work out a formula for getting to the next scale - start with C, sharp the fourth then take the fifth note as the start of the new scale , then just keep going till you hit c#. There's a formula for doing the anti clockwise flat keys also
cheers for that! when i said i want to incorporate theory into my lessons, i meant the ones that i will be teaching. I did take theory lessons for a few months and i still read up and practice scales etc. although theory for a new starter won't involve much really. i would focus more on the actual playing ability first and get that up to a decent level, then introduce them to scales and such.
I've had a few lessons and although I can't commit to going regularly, it made me realise just how much I didnt know and how many corners I'd cut. theres a certain value in that. He also praised some things that I'd taught myself so it was quite an affirmatory experience.
indeed, i noticed the same thing myself when i dropped my lessons for a year, then resumed them, and realised i had done myself a massive dis-service, because yeah, i was playing my favourite songs, but no, i hadn't developed any sort of musical ability in myself other than playing other peoples songs. so i decided to just jam alot more and read up on theory. Theory is something i want to incorporate into my lessons, it really helps if you are a theoretical person, like me. Good luck Geek99!

The place where i get my music lessons that only has one bas teacher now has 2.... they asked me to be the new bass teacher on a premises they are opening soon Hopefully i can persuade a few young antrim people to buy lessons off me although i'm not expecting anything great from it, but i'm happy to be asked to be a teacher

think the police might be owed some royalties on this one

somebody should tell him he can take the mic out of the stand, rather than taking the whole mic clip off the stand. -
oh, i know a joke about oil! you get olive oil from squeezing olives, and sunflower oil from squeezing sunflower seeds.... but baby oil, where does it come from? ok, it would be funnier if i told you it in person.

hey guys, looking for some advice or information if you don't mind. I have a 1998 ashdown ABM 400 head. It has a silver faceplate, and doesn't have one of those vinyl covered cases, it is just bare metal. anyway, i got this about 8 months ago, but i have been wondering about it. I was told it was 250 watts... I think it is 400 watts, unless it was changed down to 250 at some stage for some reason? also, i can't seem to find any info about this head online anywhere. all i know was made in 1998, and it has a silver face, rather than the slightly later blue face. Thanks.
depending on the design brief... the bmw guys who designed the bongo went for basswood. Ok they also designed the bongo so possibly that doesn't say anything - but just that everything is chosen for a reason. the "fender woods" of alder and maple I'm guessing were chosen to use partly as they were cheap for Leo to get his hands on.
I wouldn't deny that, but i would even make a bass from alder before basswood. Basswood tends to have a very dense, non-projecting sort of quality, which makes a very dense tone. I suspect it hasn't done it so much in the case of the aerodyne because it has a very slim body. -
How has your day been as a bassist?
What's so bad? Does it fall apart?
no, stop being ridiculous, i just said i don't normally agree with it. You are trying to start an argument over nothing here. -
What have they done to you?
there are far better materials to build a guitar from before basswood. -
Sounds like it can be used as shower gel!
don't think i haven't tried! i was going to use it to polish my car though....
Rickenbacker object to people making copies of their basses? Quite right too. People should make their own original looking basses. As for basses that I don't like ..... anything Fender but also those Fender Aerodyne Jazz and Precisions or P/Js or whatever both look and sound horrible. They really should have been badged as Squiers.
W.H.A.T!!!???!!! Aerodyne jazzes look and sound great in general! i don't know if you have played one for long, but it was maybe a bit of a dud. you might be biased because of your dislike of fender. -
Been a few years and it dont stink yet. On a similar vein though, anyone on here found anything that will lubricate strings ? there used to be some stiff that came in little aerosols, but I cant find any mention of it these days. I just bought a new Precision and theres way too much zing for my liking, I'm too tight fisted to change the strings just yet but they sure are taking a lot of playing in.
you want to lubricate the strings? ....FAST FRET! I use fast fret for all my strings, all my fretboards, all my necks, all my bodies and all my hardware. fecking lovely stuff.

when you say laminate, i assume you are talking about 3/4/5/6 piece necks, and not encasing the necks in plastic? -
It's not just about strength - it's about stability. A one piece neck can move. Three piece neck means any movements are further minimised because the movement of one piece of wood has to works against the movemnet of another 2. Net result? They generally don't move anywhere near as much as a one piece. As for glued timber, you only have to look at a Gibson headstock break. It breaks once. You tightbond it. Drop your Gibson again, the headstock will tend to break anywhere but where the glue is.
no, they clearly said it was stronger, not more stable. -
Yep. Milty get youz facts straight!
youz?.... alright. I am a trained joiner, and in my experience, 2 pieces of timber glued together tended to not be as strong as a single piece of timber. I think it was a fair conclusion to draw. and i have seen the scarf joints break off before. was i totally wrong? I don't think so. -
The scarf jointed necks are stronger than the one piece ones. Is all of the point of a scarf joint, the grain keeps going in the right direction, its the one piece necks with angled headstocks that break off, like on Gibsons.
ssh! don't like you -
You have a point. Flame off. I was thinking of the epi t-bird, most of the gibby ones I've played have balanced ok. It's just that the heads tend to snap off for no good reason.
the heads snap off because they are a different piece of timber from the rest of the neck, scarf jointed onto the top of the neck. They do this so they can tilt the headstock back and avoid the strings jumping out of the nut or anything like that. lots of brands don't do that, because it weakens an already weak part of the neck, but i suppose its personal preference really.
