1. My "student" double bass is a zeller. It's had a pro set-up & some gentle repairs with the seams working their way free over the 2 years I've had it. Bought it second hand with a bow, case, pick-up etc. (if you need a bow I have one spare) for a grand off an advert on gumtree.

Strings can be a pain as there are lots of different sorts & they're all sphincter-tigheningly expensive: however, keep your eyes peeled on here & ebay & there tend to be quite a few "tried these on my bass, they didn't really work" which are worth investigating. Plus you can always move them on here or on ebay with "these strings are like new, only had them on my bass for a week etc etc". Strings seem to vary more with individual basses than electrics, and the feel can be quite different between them.

Do you have a teacher who you could ask to try any basses out? It might cost you an hour of their time, but I have to say it's worth it.

  2. For sale one sparkly blue bass. Not made any more, so no manufacture's link. They do make the 'funk unlimited' which is as I understand it the same bass.

It's the 2-e.q. single pup version. Comes with hard case.

Bought from this forum from Marcus.

Available for try-out / pick-up in Egham or Central London.

Reason for sale is two-fold: gassing for a nicer double bass and I've got too many 4's! I've got a Sadowsky which is staying, this and a Musicman stingray which perform much the same function: obviously if I could afford it I'd keep both.....

It's in good condition: not abused but well loved. Neck pocket is tight. Bolts are a bit rusty as seen in the detail photo, and I tonked it on a monitor inadvertently which means it has a small chip on the bottom.

Feel free to offer trades but really I'm after cash to fund my double bass addiction.

  3. Up for grabs is my beautiful f-bass studio in black and white ceruse.

I bought this on here from bassjamm, and I believe the following is a review of the actual bass:
    http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9619

Reasons for sale are two-fold: I want to sell some of my collection to fund a nice double bass, I'm only playing 4s these days. I'd say it was in perfect condition: it's recently had a pro set up and new output jack fitted.

Feel free to PM me with questions / trade offers, but I'm mostly up for cash to fund my double bass addiction!

  4. Still for sale! Bump.

C'mon people. There must be SOMEONE who wants this gorgeous bass?

Do you think I'd get more bites if I converted it back to a 'normal' tuning?

  5.
Just out of interest. What gauge string do you use on an F#?
It's the bottom 4 from the warwick dark lords, then a single in the same series; so a .175.

    http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/...gsDark-Lord/7XE

  6.
I was wondering do any classical players know any easy-ish solo pieces. Preferable something that doesn't go wildly out into the thumb position. Also i dont ind cello music but will it have to be transposed.
Ive been playing suite 1 in g major by bach so far, at a slowed down pace.
Just some music to really push me outside my lessons were i mainly perfect technique.

Also what are some good strings for bowing. I find my ones don't grip no matter how i try as much as i would like. Maybe its the softer petz's rosin I'm using.

    Thank you
    Sam H
I'm particularly fond of the Simandl Etudes.

    http://www.amazon.com/Etudes-String-Bass-F...l/dp/0825829313

I've got a version with play along CD, but I had to have it shipped from the USA.

    http://www.musicminusone.com/simandl-compl...des-p-1077.html

  7. When playing scales & arpeggios on the upright: yes. Helps tremendously with the pitch.

When playing Maiden covers... no. I'd run out of breath after the first 16 bars & wouldn't have time to take a breath. :)

  8. For sale, a Carvin XB-75P.

I've had this from new since I lived in the USA & bought it circa 2004. It's a wonderful example. The flamed koa top is lovely!

The reason for selling is that it's just not being used any more due to a shift back to a 4.

More details on the electrics etc are available on the carvin museum site:
    http://www.carvinmuseum.com/playersgallery/xb75.html
    http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/images/04-lb75.html

Note that this is a 'P' which means it has the piezo under the bridge, so the controls are volume, balance between the magnetic pickups, balance between magnetic & piezo. Three band eq.
The small switch is a coil tap. Mostly I run it 100% magnetic & 50/50 between the pickups, with a little tweak of eq where required. (See sound files below).

    It's also electronically tagged.

    On-line review:
    http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/images/...xb75review.html

Comes with a hard case and shipping.

It's easy to slap on due to slightly wider than normal string spacing on a 5 (~18mm) and plenty of room in front of the front pup: Ed Friedland describes his carvin as 'a slap monster' on his slap bass DVD.

    Here he is in action:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_3Ec0DsfxI

You're welcome to try it out in Thorpe (near Egham) and I can deliver to the centre of London if you want to save shipping.

I'd prefer a straight cash sale, but I'm open to trade offers.

  9. 1) How long have you been playing Bass Guitar/String Bass for or both?
    Bass Guitar: 20 years
String Bass: Aged 15-18, then a gap, now about 2 years. So 5 years in total?

    2) If you don’t play string bass/bass guitar have you thought of doubling up on either to get more recognition as a bass player?
    N/A

    3) Who are your favourite exponents of both string bass/bass guitar?
String: Scott LaFaro, Garcia-fons, Ron Carter, Rufus Reid. In a less musical sense, the guy that does contrabass conversations, Jason Heath, has done more than any other individual to advocate the double bass on the internet.
Electric: Wooten and Pastorious are probably the most innovative / original & therefore

    4) Do you think that both the bass guitar and string bass are important as bass instruments?
Yes. I but I also think the Tuba, Trombone and Bassoon are important. I'm not sure what you're getting at with this question. If you're asking which I think has made more of an impact, in recent history, it'd have to be the electric bass.

    5) What genres do you think are important for bass players to listen to?
    Whatever inspires them.

One of the things I love about the bass is that it's an incredibly versatile instrument: from classical to Jazz to death metal. The electric bass is also a very young instrument in the grand scheme of things. I think it has some evolving to do.

    6) Do you think electric guitarists can learn to play bass guitar more than string bass?
There's a reason the bass Leo designed in the 50's is called the 'Precision'.

    7) Do you think bass can be used to solo as well as accompany other instruments?
Yes, but it's not something I'm particularly interested in listening to, or performing.

    8) Do you think it is important to learn to sight read?
Yes. I'm with Wooten on this one: It's important to be able to read, write and articulate in any communication medium, be it language or music. I can sight read English, I should be able to sight read music if I'm fluent.
(Actually I'm still on 'Dr. Zeuss' / 'The Red Pirate' music wise, but you get the drift).

    9) What do you think of bass guitars such as 5 string/6 string e.g. as being an add-on to the bass players role?
You should ask this at extendedrangebassist.com.
This is a natural part of the instrument's evolution: as strings and amplifiers (?and musical taste?) have changed to deal with both the lower frequencies and a greater frequency range, it's natural that an instrument fills the void. Might as well be the bass. Where does the Chapman stick fit in to your question? It's not something that could have existed in the 50s because of the technology issues. Is it still a bass? Certainly it's bassists that seem to take to it.

    10) What are your opinions on electric upright basses as a substitute for the string bass?
I think they are an instrument in their own right. I don't think they'll ever replace the string bass in the same way that electric violins won't replace the violin. I wonder if there are violin forums that argue this?

    11) What is the best amp to use for bass guitar or string bass?
Electric Bass: depends on the setting. I like an ampeg or GK 800RB into an 8x10.
String Bass: I use a bassbase (GK) into an accugroove tri-210 as it has a nice even frequency response.

    12) What pickups for string bass are the best for capturing the natural tone of the instrument?

I haven't yet heard a piezo that yields the true tone.

  10.
Hi,

Just adding some trade options -

Apart from a Yamaha SLB200, I would also be interested in the following

    - vintage maple fretboard jazz basses
    - upscale maple boarded jazz type basses 4 or 5 string
    - really nice fivers e.g. Wal/ W & Tronics etc

Plus top up of cash in the trade...

    Cheers!

    Nick
Would that stretch to a maple boarded F-bass studio? It's not *exactly* a jazz type: but it is quite upscale :-)

  11.
Try this site....
    http://www.kissfanshop.de/GeneSimmons/cost...Gene1973USA.htm

Click through the years to choose which one you want to try... he had many different outfits (almost one for each album/tour)

If you're doing it as cheap as possible then your ideas are already on the right track :)
Excellent link - thanks.

  12. It might be a touch cliche: but we're playing a Halloween gig, and I want to go as Gene Simmons.

Question is; does anyone have any experience or good photos from which I could base my costume?

Best internet resource I've found is here:
    http://www.legendaryhalloween.com/gene-simmons-costume.html

I'd prefer to do this on the cheap. I think it'll have more mojo that way.

    I'm thinking:
Charity shop for black bottoms / (several sizes too small).
    Army Surplus for black boots.
Pound shop for knee pads, plastic tubing & Black Wig.
    Halfords for Silver spray paint.
Pet shop for studded dog collar
