Gutted at this news. I was a big fan of Bernie during the 'good Whitesnake' era 😢

Do they still do Oranjeboom lager?
They had a terrible tv advert for it in the 70s / 80s with a cheesy tune lifted from some other programme ..
Yes it's still available...horrid stuff🤮

If a questionable song has a good bassline then it's a good song.

I played unlined fretless for a number of years and always used rounds (Rotosound Swing no less). I found them far more zingy and dynamic.
I just don't get the current flatwound trend, especially on fretted basses. Hey ho, that's just me.

Fair enough. Sorry you got a Friday afternoon special
No worries 😁 ... just my luck.
I bought it online sight unseen (from Andertons?) a bit of a shot in the dark but worth a punt.

Indeed, this is what warranties are for
True but I just didn't fancy it.

You didn't send it back and try another?
Nope, didn't fancy another after the first experience.

Okay...
So I bought a new Sire jazz bass about a year or so after they were released to rave reviews. Sadly I was disappointed with the QC.
Amongst other minor quibbles more prominent issues included one of the inlays sitting proud of the fingerboard by several millimetres (and at at a quirky angle); a faulty input jack; a preamp which failed after several days.
In my experience they were overhyped.

Thankfully I only have to pay nothing to not see or hear her at all...

Does anyone run a simple set-up anymore?
I'm seeing bass players these days with crazy pedalboards in front of them.
The only pedal I have is a Polytune.
What happened to bass, lead, amp?
My gigging setup for many years as my TC electronic amp has a built in Chorus...

Just saying...

Grow the nails on your plucking fingers, play with a low action and use a bass with a maple neck/maple fingerboard combination.

Love them or loath them Geddy's vocals are a significant part of Rush's USP.
After all they had a level of success which is unimaginable.

There are too many great players out there to mention... a few that spring to mind who I rate.... Verdine White, Bootsy, Marcus Miller, Anthony Wellington, Chuck Rainey... I could go on all night.. but these give you a flavour of what I consider a good bassist. Often prominent in the song, but not overplaying
Great players for sure!

I was asked to think about covering some 'Rush' (Geddy Lee)....
I was totally underwhelmed by what I heard in the bass department.
Fair enough, horses for courses.
Out of interest, who does impress you in the bass department?

Having never actually played a metal specific bass I'm curious about whether they're actually anything more than just a bit metal looking.
I'm a bit curious about the Ibanez Iron label basses as a replacement for my P bass
You have a P bass, no replacement is required!!

Right stupid question, and probably something I should have figured out a while ago.
For what it's worth I don't think this was a stupid question at all.

If memory serves me correct I believe Jaco was in part sleeping rough in NYC around the time of this production.
Heart rending really. Never is there a truer maxim, 'When you laugh the whole world laughs with you, when you cry you cry alone'.
It's all about context: everything always is. In retrospect my guess is a lot of young players won't get what the fuss was about but this footage features a genius talent already set on an irretrievable tragic course. He was on the cusp of being snuffed out and in part he craved it for some blessed relief from his demons.
For me he was an absolute beast on the instrument. A monster player and a cool cat. The best.
