1. Afternoon all

On my way to work today, I spied a bass in the local Cash Converters window out of the corner of my eye as I went past on the bus. I walked back and had a proper look, but struggled to identify it. It looks like something from the SR range, but I can't really match it up with anything on the Ibanez website.

Anyone have any ideas? Could it be a potential bargain? Sorry for the dodgy photos, didn't have time to go in and ask to have a proper look at it.

  2. Dispatch from Amazon is 2 to 4 months. Has anyone found it available a bit quicker than that? Anyone know if this is compatible with the iPhone 5/5C/5S? It looks like the old style connector, if that's the case I'll have to purchase to Lightning adaptor for it. Very intrigued by this, already playing with the app on my phone.

If I wanted to spend £200 on a Precision bass I would hold out for a Silver Series Squier. I had one and it is the second best Precision straight off the bat that I have played (the best being my newly acquired JV). They are lightweight, have a beautiful neck and a warm, dark, woody tone especially with flats on.

I second this, I love the one you sold me ;)

    Just noticed this, what?

This is me being half asleep, it is of course valve.

Can't seem to upload a photo, but I used to use the Tour 700 with an ABM410 and my guitarist used a 6505 though a Marsall 4x12. I never had any problem matching him for volume. I never even strayed past the halfway point on my amp for the 2 years or so I used this rig and that was about 500w at 8ohms IIRC.

I can only suggest that the 4x10/2x10 combo may be inefficient. Maybe you should try using just the 4x10 for a rehearsal and see if that helps?

I remember, you sold me the head :P we're rehearsing tonight, so I'll try just the 410. Ta.

You are stuck with the limitations of the 2x10, both those cabs are the same impedance so power is split 50/50. You need to use two cabs the same it will make less issue. As it is, cut the low eq, crank the mids, 5150 users nearly always mid scoop all to hell because they want to be a bass and a snare drum at once. Loads of mids, and play high and widdly until he starts playing the guitar parts.

This is what I thought may be happening, thanks. Two 410s is a bit much to be carrying around, so I might have to rethink my cab situation. Cheers.

  6. Afternoon all

This seems like a silly question and I feel a bit silly for asking it, but I'm really starting to doubt my rig's power and reliability.

I use a Peavey Tour 700 with an Ashdown ABM 410 and ABM 210 cabs. The amp puts out 700watts on that 4ohm load; the 410 is rated at 600watts and the 210 is rated at 300watts.

Now, I know wattage isn't a clear indication of actual power (from what I've read anyway) but I really do struggle sometimes to match my guitarist's volume during rehearsals (a valve Peavey 6505, 120watts, with his gain set at around 2-3). I have to push my pregain halfway and postgain to maximum to start matching the volume of his head.

The trouble is with the amp going that high, the speaker protection starts kicking in and I have to turn down in case my cabs blow (more specifically, the lower rated 210).

Now, I know valve amps are significantly louder than solid states, but should there really be that much difference between 120 watts valve and 700 watts solid state? Could there be something up with the head, something wrong with the cabs, or are they just unsuited?

    Cheers

  7. Here's my little setup, the mixer's out of action until I can afford a new power supply for it, and I'm desperate need of some studio monitors, but you get the jist of it. Works very well for what I want it for.

Pino will also excel in any given musical situation......but for me, JMJ was the ultimate NIN bassist! :)

I always struggle to decide whether I preferred Jeordie or Justin playing bass for NIN - it's so close I just can't choose between them.

Unfortunately, after watching some videos from the Tension tour, I'm really disappointed with Pino. Excellent bassist, not going to dispute that, and because his comfort zone is purely bass, NIN has live bass on songs like Head Like A Hole, Wish and March Of The Pigs now, which has never happened before. But he just looks so out of place, is completely stationary while playing and to be honest, looks entirely uninterested in being there :( I'm sure that's not the case, but that's just the way it comes across.

  9. My two Epiphone Thunderbirds, between £250 and £350 each (bought new), found them both better to play than the Gibson variants in the shop. Both in need of a good setup now, but I wouldn't change them for the world. I'd gladly pick up several more when I can afford to!

Ibanez GSR200 (bought new, around £250) which I sold a few weeks ago (and regretting it) was a cracking bass, missing it already. LTD B15 bought second hand for about £130 is the best 5-string I've ever played, put Bill Lawrence pickups into it after the stock pups failed, and made it even more fun to play.

And last but not least, the Squier Silver Series Precision that I bought today from a fellow Basschatter. Got home with it around 4pm today, haven't put it down since, an absolute dream to play and gorgeous tone.

What happened to Charlie Clouser? Loved that guy! And I see on twitter that Trent has Robin Finck back in the band. Should be interesting to have such an old influence back in the fold.

It's interesting how Trent Reznor and Marilyn Manson always seem to recruit musicians that barely seem to be able to function in day to day life but are capable of incredible artistry and musical foresight. Really very clever musicians!

Not sure if Trent and Charlie are still on good terms or not. Robin however has been playing with the band since 2008 (and was invited to play back in 2005 as well but he was touring with Guns 'N' Roses at the time).

Oh dear god. I guessed that something was different seeing how crazy he went on stage, really looked like he was exorcising some demons, but that's sad man.

Poor guy, hopefully he manages to come back and channel it into music or something, get himself back up!
Indeed, he apparently never abused drugs or alcohol but the health issues were obvious to the rest of the band through the extensive touring, which ultimately led Trent to not ask him back after the Year Zero tours.

Fantastic guitarist, such a massive, precise sound, and a huge stage presence, I really hope he pulls through and gets back into music again too.

Ooh, I haven't heard much about Aaron, he's one of my favourite ever guitar players just for NIN alone, always admired his ability to produce such chaos while remaining totally on spot and in control.. What's happened to him lately? I usually read up about these things, but alas... I'm lazy.

Yup, going to be different that's for sure!
He's suffered from mental problems over the past few years, mental breakdown, diagnosed with bi-polar, major depressive disorder and other illnesses. Has completely quit music, has all of his gear in a storage locker and admitted in a recent interview he has completely forgotten how to play guitar.

He still does it, just less often, Reading 2007 was crazy onstage but I think in large part that was thanks to Aaron North who was a bit... Unhinged haha. Brilliant but chaotic.

Yeah, a bit of his trademark headbob and a quick run off when a Mic stand heads his way. Hell Trent even had backup singers on that clip, which is a bit... Odd..
Aaron was indeed crazy on stage, just watch the Beside You In Time DVD. He even makes Jeordie White a bit nervous at times, and given his onstage history with Marilyn Manson, that's quite an achievement. Very sad about what's happened to Aaron in recent years.

I noticed the backing singers too, sounded very strange - look forward to seeing it in full though!

  14. As far as I'm aware (and I've seen no statements or info to say otherwise), Josh Eustis is still the live bassist for NIN at the moment. Pino recorded several songs on the new album 'Hesitation Marks' so perhaps it's a guest spot for a few songs, and Josh will move to guitar or synths?
