1.
finally i can contribute to this thread!

well... first gig last night... and the main reason i've been a bit quiet over the last few weeks. in a moment of sheer madness three weeks ago i agreed to stand in for a bass player who was on his stag do last night. which left me with 3 weeks and 33 songs to learn.

it was a 40th birthday party at the malthouse in rishworth - really great venue except for the slightly odd 'stage' which was behind wooden beams. the staff were amazing and all our food and tea was free.. hurrah!

we didn't get on til 10 as the meal went on for longer than expected, and i was still suspiciously lacking nerves, despite the whole flippin' affair being opened by me on bass (2nd half of 'the chain').

i screwed up at various points during the night, but mostly during the root-notey type songs (they all got a little muddled in my brain), and i'm pretty sure noone was too bothered by it, i busked it well enough to be passable. the songs where the bass was more complex were great, and the singer bigged me up massively as i was retuning for 'somebody told me' by the killers - and the guests went absolutely nuts, they were screaming and clapping, even the staff came in to watch! that was such a thrill!!

it was such an incredible gig, never mind it being my first. the dancefloor was full all night, as were the tables, which were being danced on, and at one point, they were actually hanging from the rafters (i was just praying no-one was seriously injured, although it would have livened the story up somewhat). we had to turn down at midnight because the locals complained that they could hear the bass (wooo! complaints on my first night!) too clearly.. but we snuck the volume back up for the encore.

so, as we finished and i put my bass down, this guy comes wandering up to me, and i got a little nervous as i suspected he was probably the obligatory musician-guest come to tell me how much i sucked, and he was indeed a drummer but in fact, he said some truly amazing things that i never expected to hear. he wasn't the only one, either, and i feared my ego would no longer fit in the car along with all the gear.

anyway - end of the night came and after the excitement died down we were given tea and cake (as if things couldn't get any better!) and the band all wrote nice things on my set list. got home about 2:45 just in time for my brain to implode after the busiest three weeks of my life, and i've woken up feeling elated, but a little like i've been beaten up.

it's ok, this bass playing lark.

2. without trying to chuck a spanner in the works, i thought headstock B.
A would be ok, if the first half, ie next to the nut, represented teh rest of the bass by being slightly more in tune with the shape of the horns, ie rounded ( or possibly protruding out a bit more. I hope this makes sense.
Good diary this.
I hope it all works out OK.
Cheers

3.
Well I need the space now, so the Ashdown copy is up for £60.
I think thats a fair price for a fantastic sounding 15" cab. ;)
Hi.
Are you bringing the 15" cab back down to Bristol at all?

cheers

4. I will almost certainly buy a better bass once I've learnt how to play the one I have now. i dont know if this is the same as just wanting a new bass for th sake of 'just having another bass'
I have no idea where my playing will take me yet, but a hand made bass may well be only thing I go for as I dont much like the look of the majority of stuff out there.

5.
It pisses me off to know that they don't want to rock the boat with their bread and butter advertisers. Have a rant about a Dingwall bass (unlikely I know, it's just a name example) and you may get your letter printed. Moan about the sh*te service from Fender or Peavey and you've got no chance as they each take about 6 pages in a mag like that.

Another thing (sorry, I'm in a bad mood) When Bassist mag finished, it was supposed to be incorporated into Guitarist mag. It was for about 3 months, then, as the months went by, you're lucky if they condescend to review one crappy £100 bass.

...and breaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaath!

6.
In my opinion, it sounds like you should avoid turning the volume up to match the drummer, and instead make sure that the drummer knows that you expect him to match his level to the rest of the band.

absolutely

+1

7.
I recently asked a very 'beginner' question and got lots of answers. If I had posted that on a beginners forum, what would the difference be, do you think?

Cheers

Ped , i think theres a bit of a diffence when such an established memeber such as your good self asks a question than when a brand shiny new person asks it.

I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Cheers

8. Hi, am in a similar place myself.
I was thinking of the Ashdown mag combo, the one with the two ten inch drivers.
A few people have them on this site and you can also use an extension cab to get the full wattage out of it. The only thing it doesnt have that i would like is a phono in for practising with cd's etc.
I need to go and play one, but ther is no where in town that has one.

have a look the digital village site as tehy seem to have some good prices i think its www.dv27.co.uk (com)

good luck

9. Hi Ped.
Blimey, i thought you could read!

For scales you could try the 'Beginning bass scales' by Peter Pickow.
For teaching your self to read and to sight read, try simplified sight reading for bass. You could probably throw away the first half of the book, but it gets interesting after that.

bass guitar for dummies is a great book. It was the first one i bought when i started playing again. It has some good stuff in it, and yeas it does licks although i have to say they are limited. The problem with this otherwise great book, is that every example is also listed in TAB, which is far easier to follow. So although i thought it was a great book to start, i really dont refer to it so much any more.

I have just found a really good tutor, who is doing the same with me. simple reading skills. It can be painful, as i get frustrated with it, after all, i can read bass clef, but i have no idea how to relate it to the instrument right now. My tuutoris good, simple stuff to start with.

I have been a pro brass player, but i stopped playing years ago, learning to learn again is great.
Enjoy.

Matt
