1. Thanks for the comments guys. It really is a nice instrument and I'll be sorry to part with it.
2. I bought this excellent bass a couple of months ago from Pete Young and it's only been used for practice at home since then. I've just been landed with a collosal vet's bill (pets, who'd ave'em?) so I'm reluctantly selling it to raise some funds. It was originally custom built for oldslapper at a cost of £600, and I can do no better than show his comments: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 It's the bass seen in Paul Rose's Prosebass signature here on basschat, and on his funnbass blog. Wrinklygit has also reviewed it in the bass reviews section. The bass is very lightweight and compact for a 34" scale and the twin humbuckers give a great sound. The body is Spanish Cedar, Neck is Maple and the board is Rosewood. Twin volume controls with push-pull coil tap. The neck is quickly and easily removed/reattached for travel. The head fitting and individual bridge tuners are very high quality, solid brass German ABM hardware. The tuners currently retail at £72 each! The nut is a Warwick brass 'Justanut'. Double ball end strings can be used as well as normal type. Comes with an unused Madarozzo padded gig bag, a brand new Planet Waves 3 metre lead, and a brand new Leathergraft extrawide leather/neoprene strap. For a quick sale I'd accept £265 including Interparcel/UPS insured delivery. NB, the odd pattern on the chromed brass head fitting is a reflection. The finish is perfect.
3. So that's two votes for Status half wounds. I'll give them a try. Many thanks for the advice.
4. Paul Rose is building me a compact 30" scale 4 string fretless with an ebony fingerboard. He favours roundwounds but I'm wondering whether half wound or pressure wound strings might be a better choice for jazz and fusion, to avoid board wear but retaining some of the definition of roundwounds. Bilbo has advised me to go for Rotosound Solo Bass pressure wounds as they sound good and last a long time, but unfortunately they only seem to be available in standard 34" scale. Do ground wound strings like Status Hotwire Half Wound, which are available in short scale, last well like pressure wounds and flats, or will they need replacement relatively quickly like roundwounds? Coated strings like Elixirs and D'Addario EXP are another alternative but neither appear to be made in short scale. Can long scale strings be successfully trimmed and modified to fit my 30" scale bass?
5. Get the dvd of Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia Live 2005 Stuttgart gig. Dave Ball's playing is a great example of solid, effective fretless without loads of flash. It's very instructive being able to watch his technique whilst listening to the basslines.
6. Have a word with Paul Rose (aka Prosebass, and, more recently, Funnbass). Shortscale basses are his speciality, his prices are very reasonable, and I can vouch for the quality of his work. I've just placed an order with him for a 30" scale unlined 4 string fretless with ebony board based on his TErgo design.
7. I Rockboxed my Sansa Clip Plus for the extended battery life when playing FLAC files but was less than impressed with the sound quality so reverted back to the Sansa firmware.
8. Thelonious Monk- Straight, No Chaser, followed by Esbjorn Svennson Trio- Viaticum
9. I recently bought a new Canadian made 'Earwig' headphone amp for £22 inc postage on fleabay. Took a while to arrive but thankfully no customs duty. With my cheapo Panasonic 40ohm full sized, closed back phones there was a bit of background hiss, but my Prosebass certainly sounded wonderful. I emailed Enea, the guy who custom builds the Earwig about the hiss. He said the amp design was rather sensitive to headphone impedence and suggested 65 ohm or greater. The 70 ohm JVC phones I've just bought have cured the hiss. A budget priced best buy, but if you can afford it, just order an sfx Micro H.
10. CDex is freeware, handles FLAC very well and has worked flawlessly for me. It's a bit old though, I can't seem to find a help file, and to rip my CDs without annoying gaps between tracks I've had to save each album as one single file. That's fine for me as I listen to albums from start to finish, but wouldn't be so good if you like selecting single tracks.
11. I bought a brand new Roland Micro Cube Bass RX a few days ago for quiet practice. Didn't think to try one out in a shop on my newly acquired Prosebass 4 string headless, and just ordered it sight unseen from the Normans website. First off, the manual states that only alkaline type AA cells can be used, not rechargeables, so could work out quite expensive to run. But the big problem for me was when I tried using the amp with the supplied 9v 'wall-wart' mains adapter; I immediately got a massive hum that increased alarmingly when a note was played. This wasn't present when using the AA battery option, so I tried moving the amp to different parts of the house, and even into a detached garage to avoid any possible interference, but with no improvement. In desperation I asked Paul Rose for advice and learned from him that my bass had been wired with no bridge earthing, so as to avoid electrocution should a powerful amp ever malfunction, and this arrangement was causing an earth imbalance when the wall wart was used. Straight mains powered amps and straight battery powered would be ok though. I returned the amp and got a full refund and will use the 'Earwig' headphone amp I've just bought instead. However for acoustic jamming, busking etc this little amp would be ideal if you're happy feeding it a diet of Duracells, and don't have a bass with a non-earthed bridge for use when mains powered. Jerry
12. I've just bought Pete's Prosebass 4 string headless. Arrived promptly, well packed, and exactly as described. Top guy to deal with.
