**SOLD** Ampeg SVT 5 pro US made head – £370
peteb replied to peteb's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Sold to Mr Waynepunkdude – great bloke, everytime we spoke on the phone to confirm arrangements ended up chatting for well over half an hour about all things bass and many other things! As regards to the warming up issue – when I first bought the amp I took it to a qualified amp tech mate of mine to check that it was OK and to see if he could sort out the start up problem. He said that the amp was generally fine but to fix the start up issue would be expensive unless he could get hold of a diagram (Ampeg do not make their schematics readily available). He also said that it was a problem that I could live with easily enough if I just let the amp warm up for 5 minutes before plugging in. I have to say that it was never an issue in all the gigs and rehearsals that I used it for. I believe that Wayne sought advice about this from a company that used to distribute Ampeg and was told that it was a known problem that had something to do with the amp’s start up protection routine (I think that I’ve got that right). To fix it requires a factory repair, which of course would not be cheap (I believe that Wayne is considering it). Obviously I let everyone know that it had this issue and reflected it in the price that I asked (£370 for an amp that I believe cost over £1.5k new). Equally I bought the amp for a very reasonable price, knowing of this issue and that the price I paid reflected this…… Cheers – Pete -
Here's Guy Pratt on being a session player Bass Guitar Magazine - Guy Pratt on Sessions.
Great article - should be compulsory reading for everybody here, even the 15 year old prodigies!

I tried out some markbass gear, wasn't impressed and went and bought a second hand SVT However, I have now bought a markbass 3x10 combo and am in the process of selling the SVT! The big attraction of course is the size / lack of weight, but they do seem to work well live - I changed my mind after hearing two friends using them at gigsand had to admit that they sounded better than I thought when I first tried one out Still got my mesa boogie amp and SWR cabs, which does sound much better to me, but I'm using the markbass combo for gigs I'm doing out of the back of the car!

How do you transport your cab? Casters, dolly, trolly?
Does anyone just carry their combo/cab? I used to carry my peavey combo from the car to the stage and back no problem.
A Peavey combo on a stage – now you’re just being ridiculous! Personally, I think that the squirrels are the way to go, very resourceful animals…… -
Can't really help except to say that I have played one & knew someone who had one - terrific bass, would love to own one!

Two Germans (Warwick Streamers), one yank (70s p-bass) and one that was supposedly part built in Japan and part built in the good 'ol USA (Ken Smith Burner)!

Trace Elliot BLX-80 GP7SM 1x10 combo *SOLD*

Cool - don't suppose you've got a tab for that?

I’ve been using SWR cabs for years now – they sound great! I had a SWR amp for about 15 minutes several years ago – it was bloody awful! +1 to playing better with a good sound. Also, the audience generally don’t care about your bass sound, they would just prefer to listen to a band that sounds good to one that doesn’t – a good bass tone is just part of a good overall sound (along with everything else)!

Stringbusters seem to have run out of their stock of Elite Stadiums (standard gusge) just as I've used my last set! Does anyone know of any other places holding stock where I can get some cheap on-line? Cheers - Pete
Love my SVT3, but it does suck at 8 ohms in a loud band situation, you need the full 4 ohm load to make it sing. Open to any kind of trades for this'un Pete? Mike
Sorry, no trades Already bought it's replacement and need the money to pay for it! Cheers - Pete -
Sansui Hi-Fi separates system - £100

Having a bit of a clear out and I’m reluctantly selling my hi-fi separates system for £100 Comprises of: Sansui CD-X111 CD player Sansui D-X111DX stereo cassette deck Sansui AU-x111 stereo amp Acoustic Solutions tower speakers – 260w Black hi-fi stand / shelving unit Great separates system but I don't really got the room for it – the speakers and the stand will be worth well over the asking price on their own, yet alone the quality hi-fi units themselves Pick up only from Bradford (West Yorkshire) Cheers – Pete

Having a bit of a clear out and selling my Trace Elliot BLX-80 practice amp for £70 Please note that this amp has an intermittent hum that needs looking at that I haven’t got round to fixing – hence the low price! I’m guessing it won’t take too much to sort out thru I’m not really an expert in these matters Cracking little practice amp with a great tone but underused unfortunately so hopefully it will find a good home with someone on here Cheers – Pete
Hmmm interesting...And that 1350Watts is genuine? Bloody hell is that mono? @ what ohms? Problem with the SVT-3 was it was only pumping 275watts @ 8 ohms and the volume was only trickling in as I dialed it in...This is MUCH bigger and better.
Never turned it anywhere near full for fear of blowing my very powerful SWR 6x10 cab - it is certainly very loud! The 1350 watts is bridged mono @ 4 ohms You can download the users guide from the Ampeg site if you want the technical details -
Having a bit of a clear out and have a pair of Peavey HiSis2 PA cabs for sale for £150 the pair Each cab is rated @ 350w RMS (I googled it to check) and has a 15” speaker and a large horn (missus)! A bit old fashioned these days but would still be great for a rehearsal room, pub gigs, for a DJ, etc Haven’t plugged ‘em for 5 years but they worked well enough then and have been stored in a warm dry place and seem in pretty reasonable nick! Would prefer a pick up from Bradford but would be prepared to deliver for the price of the petrol if not too far away Cheers – Pete
I can't get anything out of the Ampeg's I've tried. Tonight I used an SVT-3 for the first time in a few months...Again, had to crank it A LOT to get any decent level and I tried anything. How does this fare against the SVT-3? Gotta admit...it looks more uber...Just asking for comparisons like as I can't crack it. EDIT: OMG how much wattage!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL said head I used tonight is nothing on this!
Never owned an SVT 3 so I can't really say too much but from judging from mates who have had them I would say that the SVT 5 has the same basic sound but MUCH louder and therefore obviously more headroom In addition it has the extra power amp options (dual separate power amps for true stereo or bi-amping, etc) if you need them as well as an overdrive channel and onboard compression and octaver effect I've always used it bridged into a 6x10 cab - tend to think of it as an instant dug pinnock sound if you press both the ultra low & ultra low high boost buttons -
Alas poor Yorick indeed! Let’s get this right, you’ve actually been sacked from a Van Halen tribute band fronted by Rocky Shades (whom I once had the honour of supporting once in the 80s – one of the most hilarious nights of my musical career)! Respect! Either you are the worst musician in the world (which I seriously doubt because I refuse to believe that anyone can be worse than Rocky Shades) or it is the ultimate backhanded compliment – in that RS would not know a decent player if he tripped over one, which from what I remember would probably not be such a good idea seeing as he jumped off stage to beat up a punter when we played with him!!
I'm not a fan of Mr Big, but I think it's cool to see hard rock back. at the risk of getting flamed, I'm interested in hearing the Chickenfoot (Sammy Hagar/Joe Satriani/Michael Anthony/Chad Smith) album preview clips of all the songs are here- http://www.cede.ch/en/music-cd/frames/fram...cfm?aobj=710439 strangely the bass is much more upfront than it was on Van Halen albums (eg. "Turnin left")...
I agree (except that I am a Mr Big fan)! Hope that the songs on the Chickenfoot album live up to the pedigree - early signs look pretty good Will be interesting to hear Satriani play in a proper band situation and as for actually being able to hear the bass, I think that may be down to rather different band politics......

Re. the elitist charges – some of the jazz supporters here do tend to be rather elitist but in real life most of the jazz musicians that I’ve met are anything but and seem to appreciate all types of music and playing on its own terms……
