  1. I was browsing a tiny local music shop the other day and in the window i saw an old 70s defretted, no name Japanese P copy, on sale for £75.

Being curious i had to have a go. The experience was,, Weird to say the least.

The bass was perfect, it crackled slightly, but what do you expect from an old £75 bass?
It was for the simple reason that my fingers had no boundaries, no frets to stop me. For a few moments i was in awe, but coupled with the love of this new found freedom but also a dislike for change. It was a completely different animal. I regretting putting it back. So I'm going to finally retrieve it next weekend!

    Thanks,
    Sam

    Not quite what I meant.

A few years back Jaco's first wife, Tracy, posted about it on the JacoPastorius.com forum (which has long gone). She said he used to drive her nuts with that tune... I find slightly it hard to believe it wasn't a completed tune when he went into the studio.

To the OP... Portrait of Tracy isn't that difficult to play. You just need to break it into manageable sections. I spent a few weeks working on it and pretty much nailed it, and if I can do it, anyone can. The only part I can't do is the stretched artificial harmonic D# (second fret B with the sixth fret harmonic). I just can't reach that far. I use my thumb at the neck pickup instead.

I face a similar problem to you, but i hit the B on the 7th fret of the E and harmonic the 11th? it gives the same note I've found., and guys i have started learning it! i am up to the D# artificial harmonic part at the moment, the harmonic chords were putting me off but i sat for hours last night repeating them and now i seem to be able to play them!

    Thanks,
    Sam

  3. I'm sure you've all seen this before but i find this utterly fantastic.

So i'd thought i'd start another pointless thread to admire it as i seem to be heading into a massive "Jaco phase" recently, surprising since i play Indie and Alternative.

I see it as a benchmark for what i'll never be able to play, as it will be rather impossible to be as technically sound as him.

  4. Hi Guys,

Anyone up for trying to guess this amp?, only image I've seen of Jared Followill using it as he normally used SVT CL's. My money is on some sort of Ampeg though.

I apologise for the image quality. I think its near impossible to guess, But you never know with the Basschat experts ;)

    Thanks,
    Sam

  5. Hi Guys.

So I've decided to spread my wings and diversify my tastes in music to help my bass playing become more versatile. (instead of listening and playing the same old rock stuff)

Lately ive become transfixed on Jazz and Jaco Pastorius.. his technique and tone amazes me, Can anyone recommend me some other Jazz artists or Jazz bass players i should check out?

    Thanks,
    Sam.

It has a certain charm but the pups don't do it for me. They look like fishing weights to me, they just need a couple of swivels either side. Sorry.

I'm absolutely terrible at working out notes anyway, especially when they are all bunched together like that. The best i could do is find the key, and kind of make it up as i go along.

I'd like to know what scale this actually uses.. Be much easier then aha
