1. Hi Neepheid, thanks for the response.

First first off, is this an active EMG?

I'm sure it is, I didn't know they did passive pickups? Plus they guy I bought it from said I should use a stereo jack socket, so that would imply it was active.

First off it's definitely 25K pots you should be using with active EMG pickups.

Great, I'll stick with them then.

Is your battery fresh?

Yep brand new.

Is it wired the right way (+ve to the red wire of the pickup, -ve to the ring connector of the stereo jack socket)?

Red from pickup is connected to the +ve of the battery snap. At the moment (like the diagram) -ve on the battery snap is connected to the tip of the jack socket. This could be my first problem!

Are we talking old school EMG where the main wire is a single thick white one with a braid inside for the earth and a smaller white wire inside the braid for the hot signal and red being power into the pickup?

Yep, old school as you describe above.

2. I've installed an old EMG pickup in my Squier P bass.

Unfortunately it didn't come with the EMG loom, so I have had to improvise by getting info from the internet.

I used two 500k log pots and a 100nf cap and wired it all up using this (Diagram 1):

http://www.sonic.net...pdf/2BASSPU.pdf

All I get is a low signal with full on distortion and both pots make no difference in either volume or tone.

I then tried two 25k log pots with exactly the same results.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I dunno, I spent some time with the Squeezer because my mate couldn't get what he wanted from it. I found it pretty infuriating, really un-intuitive back-page.

+1 I found the Squeezer really tedious, why didn't they add a USB port and some software? It'd be a must have pedal then.

4. Anyone seen these:

Loving the fretless and 5 string P Basses..

...wish I had your free time. 2 young kids and a hectic job are making it hard to get anything done. I've even resorted to kits to speed things up, but can't even get time to get those started (ggg tuned muff, rc booster and bb preamp based on pedalparts kits and some mods).

Have been using any spare minute (including 3am baby feeds) thinking about custom circuit combinations....
Free time is short for me too. I have an 18 month old son, so I feel your pain. We are out of the 3am feeds though.

I have built all of these whilst he has his afternoon nap, which is usually a 1 - 2 hour window.

Think there are many of us parent DIYers.

Best of luck getting some time.

6. I must build one of those Ezekiel's too.

Sorry for not having posted recently, but have been busy making pedals :-)

Since my last post I've managed to complete 2 RAT's, Colorsound Bass Fuzz, Big Muff (never got round to putting the clean blend in it), Dyna Comp, Keeley 4 Knob Comp, Zen Drive, Red Llama, Sparkle Drive, Tubescreamer, A couple of utility boxes and today I finished a Greedtone OD.

I'm addicted!

7. Bought a couple of "broken" Crybaby Wahs from Mark.

Easy deal and Mark has been an excellent seller promptly responding to my PM's throughout the deal.

Cheers again

Chris

That switching scheme won't work for this application. From your bypass switch, you need to run to the clean-blend PCB. The additional switch to turn on and off the clean blend isn't a bypass switch, you use it only to switch the output - either fuzz or fuzz and blend. Assuming you're using a 3PDT blue switch, you'll probably use one pole for LED indication, one to switch between lug 2 on the blend pot and the BM output (for blended fuzz or just fuzz, respectively), and the final one to disconnect lug 3 of the blend pot from the output of the BM when not wanting clean blend. I'll draw it out when I get chance today or over the weekend!

That would be great many thanks.

9. Cheers for the advice TG, I'll jumper the trim pot.

This is starting to fry my head a bit. I'm trying to use this diagram as a starting point:

http://www.sabrotone.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Layout_circuit_w_addon.gif

but I can't figure out how to get the clean signal to the blender.

Just to resurrect this one a bit - I put a set of Nordstrand P/J pickups in my bass (with the split coil jazz) and had the out of phase thing going on with both volumes up full. I reversed the wiring on the Jazz pickup and Robert is my Father's Brother!

Thanks Guys for the indirect help.

Cheers,
Jon

No Problem, glad to be of indirect service.

Cheers again for your respective input.

On closer inspection it seems that with either pot set to maximum, turning the other only really kicks in the pickup at about 90 - 95%.

I'm using two 250k CTS pots and a .047 Orange drop cap.
And for the sake of completeness, having double checked my above observations it seems everything is working as it should not as I described above.

Incidentally there was quite a lot of earth hum with this setup so I eventually got a split single coil for the bridge pickup and that sorted it.

Good luck with your P/J's

Cheers! :) Aye I use enamel spray paint. At the minute, budget limits me to spray cans, a compressor is on my Christmas list, though my Christmas list is pretty long...

NoirBass - what are the fuzz and blend circuits you'll be using? Switching may depend on the type of fuzz to get the best out of it is all.

I'm trying to blend a Big Muff circuit with this blender:
http://pedalparts.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Blender.pdf
Many thanks for your help.

12. Actually, whilst I'm here:

I'm looking at adding a blend to a fuzz. I have both circuits built my question is on switching.
I'd like to have one footswitch to turn the whole effect on and off and another to turn the blend function on and off.
Can anyone offer me a good diagram for wiring the switches. I've hunted high and low and cannot seem to find one.

13. Nice one TG, Thats a great help.

Yeah, in 3/ I'm exactly on about ZVEX type artwork I'll check out the Uni Posca's.

And it looks like an oven might be a good idea, even just for the dust free aspect. Who'd of thought I'd need an oven to make pedals!

Still unsure about priming the pedals and what to use, is etch primer purely used pre etching? So therefore if I'm just painting them a stock aluminium primer is what I'd want.

Cheers again I'm off to source a cheap toaster oven.

Decided to build a prototyping rig, based on the Beavis Audio Beavisboard.
Need to get another breadboard, or two, and finish wiring it all up.
But it's a start:
Excellent work sir. I have just built my first few effects pedals (including a bass fuss!) and am about to embark on a Beavis style proto rig too. And I am also instantly addicted!

Can anyone offer me some advice on painting the enclosures?

1/ I have read loads of walkthroughs on the process, but they all suggest baking them in an oven. Is that really necessary? Can I just leave them to dry?

2/ Also how do I prime them, do I use an etch primer? or can I just use a standard car type primer?

3/ if I want to paint artwork on them can I use acrylic paint and then clear coat them?

So many questions, I'd be really grateful for some advice.
