  1. Older stuff we used to play that always went down well...

    • Budgie - Breadfan
    • The Cult - Rain, She Sells Sanctuary, Lil Devil (take your pick)
    • Megadeth - Peace Sells
    • Deep Purple - Burn
    • Jesus & Mary Chain - April Skies/Blues From a Gun
    • Marillion - Assassing (We used to make a right pigs ear of this but it still went down well with the crowd)

The Phantom of the Opera is a good call from Osiris.

  2. You could do worse than look at the Ibanez SR300 series, second hand I think you can pick them up for around £150.  I would steer clear of the Affinity Squiers, but the Squire VM's, Deluxe and CV series are all decent quality basses.

Best advice is to go and try a few basses and see how they feel, we all have different styles/preferences.  A first bass needs to be able to engage you and make you want to play.

I have fairly small hands so the Ibanez works well for me, chunky Fender/Squier PBass necks do not work for me - despite the fact that I think a P Bass looks and sounds awesome.

I restarted my bass playing a few years ago after a long break, on an Ibanez GSR200 which is an entry level bass and I was amazed at what a nice bit of kit it was for the price.  I still regret selling it on when I upgraded.

If the real Jesus Christ was to stand up today, He'd be gunned down cold by the CIA, Armageddon Days Are Here Again by The The. Or most of Carter USM s output. Some of the truest words I've heard spoken have been song lyrics.

Matt Johnson & TheThe - a fine body of work.

  4. Not necessarily my favourite band but Iron Maiden first created the urge to play bass.  Even now when out running, if I have Maiden on my playlist, I start playing 'air bass'.  Thankfully I run early in the morning, so there is not much chance of being seen.

+1 for Ditto x2. Having separate stop / record buttons makes it really easy to use!

As above. The Ditto x2 is simple, intuitive and well made.

Keep the manual handy. The SR-16 isn't the most intuitive drum machine to use.

I discovered that last night! After diving in blind and getting nowhere, I sat and read the manual. (its a big manual)

Once I got my head around the 80's technology, and my 80's nostalgia had dissipated, I managed to have some fun creating a few simple Sisters of Mercy drum loops.

It's quite good fun and I think it will be useful..... time will tell. Anyway - a new toy is a new toy!

  7. My 1980s Aria SB 700. Never found a bass that had the mojo this bad boy had. Many gigs worth of sweat, beer and fag smoke ingrained in it. It also had a Powell & Peralta Rat Bones (skateboard company) sticker on it. I
Sold it when I decided my shot at rock stardom was over in 1989, and I used the money to buy a suit and get my hair cut short. Pains me to this day.

I once saw the Sisters of Mercy around Christmas time and they changed the words of This Corrosion from "Sing this corrosion to me" to "Sing merry Christmas to me" and that version of the song has stuck with me ever since! One day I'd love to do that as a cover.

and they say Eldritch has no sense of humour. Bet he even got an Xmas jumper out after the gig and washed down a couple of egg nogs.

  9. Oddly enough - the P Bass. Always loved the tone of a good P bass. But I cannot get on with the necks, I have small hands and just find it too uncomfortable after playing for 10 mins or so.

I remember sitting in a shop with a Steve Harris Blue Sparkle P Bass, I really wanted it, looked great, sounded great, but just couldn't get to grips with the neck. Even considered a hand transplant but that seemed a bit OTT.
