I am a big fan of the Ibanez basses, the SR300 range are great value for money and worth a look.
I also have a Squier Jazz bass deluxe (discontinued now I believe) which I bought as an entry level 5 string with a view of upgrading in the future. It has been an absolute joy to play and I've never felt the need to upgrade it. You really can't go wrong with the Squier basses in terms of value for money.
Colour is important - odd as it sounds, if you like the look of your bass, you're more likely to pick it up. My first bass was a horrible sun-burst effort and I couldn't wait to get rid of it! Shallow I know.
Enjoy the search - that's part of the fun!

I have a line6 BackTrack. Used once. Tried to use it again and discovered it's so old my computer will have nothing to do with it.

Yes used them to buy an amp. Swift delivery and it arrived in perfect condition. No issues at all.

those funny single cutaway things that look like stranded whales.
Always wondered how to describe those basses I've never liked, now I know. Thanks. Perfect.

A Pick. Tried and failed at pick playing. Fingers it is from now on - and they're free.

U2 With or Without You, must the one of the easiest bass lines ever surely?
Which is the first bass line I ever learned. To this day, I still detest it and hate my tutor for making me learn it.

I've always liked the lyrics that Meshuggah come up with. This gem is from an awesome track called Closed Eye Visuals.
Unbound to the pale and lifeless day by the multi-colored, multiform
A spinning anti-dream unthought. Exceeding the obsolete reality
Overheated inner shape generator. Blowing every cerebral fuse
Insanity filtered and systematized. Feeding the tools of mind abuseMind signal transmission peaked, distorted, bent, unrestrained
Neuro receivers short circuit. System parameters over gained
Nerve threads decoding the stream of the reality inverting revolution
The patterned untruth of nondream, the closed eye visual delusionA frantic cellular race down the switchbacks of mind
Throttling the existenc eengine. A propulsion beyond all limit lines
Convulsive thrusts of septic energy as infected cells collide
Unleashing the video bacterial disease. The sinew conducted pseudovisionMind signal transmission peaked, distorted, bent, unrestrained
Neuro receivers short circuit. System parameters over gained
Nerve threads decoding the stream of the reality inverting revolution
The patterned untruth of nondream, the closed eye visual delusionSelf unfolds like a disintegrating dream
All revealed but the sinister cause
My lying eyes come apart at the seams
Still how could I ever regret the lossThe self transformed into wave lengths,
Reverberating this unyielding dream. Lost in this greedy illusion
I'm forever devoured by the closed eye visual delusionA twirling visual overload Explosions of terror and beauty
Colors of fear and pain within clash into unanything
A spectra organic frenzy setting fire to the neuro highways of mind
Revolving me away from time. A soul now rendered unassigned- 2

After almost 40 years of playing the bass I only learnt this last year as one of the bands I'm play it occasionally in their current set.
Its a fun tune to play - I know that SOM are not associated with "Fun" but its certainly still one of my go to noodles.

That Trim pot affects the Delay of the Wah when you engage and disengage the pedal.
See my post below a couple of years ago.

I don't name them. Mrs Kendall does. They are affectionately known as The Red One, The Black One and the Expensive one. My black 7 string guitar is often mistaken for the The Black One, which is in fact a Squire 5 String Bass. Nevertheless, the black 7 string is still called the Black One.

I think I will end that way. It's not what I wanted, I would have liked the human factor in a band, but it's better than doing nothing or dealing with this overwhelming frustration.
Good luck and remember - when you work with yourself - you never need to compromise.....so that's one less thing to worry about.

I've been looking for a guitar player for two years without any success.
I'm more and more convinced that if you are not friend's friend with the èlite of the wonderful scene here you don't even exists
(yes, I've reached the HATE EVERYONE phase)
Hey - I feel your pain. I am in a similar position to you. I play Death/Tech metal and write my own music. Never managed to find anyone committed or even remotely interested. I ended up buying myself a guitar and learning to play the rhythm riffs myself. I think it helped expand my bass playing and gave me a new focus. My next step was a drum machine, which was less successful, but did bridge a gap I had.
Happy enough now that I can make my own music in full. All I need is my DAW, my guitar, bass and drum machine.
