1. Tom seems to be going for it today - got asked about pickup placement too........

Here is the headstock - diamondwood and white limba go together nice no ?

  2. Folks,

I have an HK 7-string bass that is not getting played as often as it should. Bought from new about 18 months ago and in excellent condition. Have had the back of the neck sanded and oiled as well as a good set up - both by Eltham Jones in Bristol - so plays very well indeed. Have replaced original strings with Rotosounds (much much better !) and some new batteries.

Looking for £240 plus shipping. If you'd like to try before you by drop me a line - based in Newport South Wales.

  3. Well,

I went a bit mad last December and ordered a 6-string fretless from Tom Clement in Florida - a Singlecut bolt-on with neck and body both made from white limba, spalted maple top and diamondwood (unlined) fingerboard - 28 position as Tom would put it - that's 28 frets - if it had any)

He's just started building it so I will put up piccies as they happen.......

Body being glued together first - looks a bit Bo Diddley at the moment but I'm sure things will change in the next few weeks !

  4. Just spotted one of the above at the Bass Gallery in Camden

    http://www.thebassgallery.com/BassProductListingTemplate.cfm?Brand=Wal&type=Bass%20Guitar&Cat_ID=1

    Not cheap !

Didn't know there was a signature bass - or did this actually belong to the man himself ? Possibly not as it has a lined fingerboard.

Any Wal experts out there know about these ?

Would love to hear Percy spanking his Wal again :o .....mind you if Percy were to pick up any bass he would make sound like PJ that's for sure....

  5. I love the PW bass tones - well, that and what he's playing on the album !

All time favourite bass tone for me is Hemispheres - the album that got me into the band - about '79 I think

Back then I thought Squire and Burnel were bass gods - then I heard Geddy......

    Sheesh !

Then came Percy, Jaco, Stanley etc etc.....

  6. 55-01 and 55-02 are identical - the only Lakland 5-string necks that aren't interchangeable with the 55-01/2 would be the Darryl Jones necks.

    I'm sure you could swap a 55-60/Joe Osbourne 5 or 55-64/Glaub 5 with a 55-01 or 55-02 neck.

In fact at some point I'd like to swap a 55-64 neck with a 55-60/JO5 at some point - we'll see !

  7. We'll at the moment it is the Raven album - good grief he's all over this disc - I love the groove, the melody, the tone on things like The Raven, Ice and Nuclear Device. Not to mention the outrageousness of Genetix......

A much overlooked album I would say

  8. ....how about Alan Thomson.......who came to fame with John Martyn.........saw him first in a covers band in Strathclyde Uni just before he joined JM's band (1981?) ..........fantastic fretless sound live and in the studio.......

Great recording quality here with John Martyn and some other guitarist (!)

  9. Went to see them in Bristol last night. Whaddaya know - a sound engineer (theirs I imagine) who knows what he is doing. No blisteringly loud but nice and dynamic, punchy - you could hear everything. No tinnitus afterwards too.........

I don't think they endeared themselves to the METALheads as there were no cookie monster vocals and there was quite a long acoustic set in the middle. I loved it though - That Mikael Akerfeldt is very funny. "You want this guitar.............give me your house"

Pain of Salvation were great as support - sound not great to begin with but it got there towards the end.

    Anyone else go ?

Great curry in the Kathmadu beforehand but perhaps that is for another forum......... :)

  10. Well, if weight is a problem, maybe you could buy this puppy:

    OMG !

  11. Interesting.....

I think I'd rather go for the beast that Chris Squire put together in the very early 70's

    http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/5548694

.....so two 50's pickups, with some interesting control cavity action going on (!) and an old style bridge.

Would be kinda cool to put something together like that !
