We recently had a discussion in repairs and tech about fret finishing, regarding wire wool techniques, it is a valid one if you do it right. Oil in pots is always a no though, especially WD40. Putting WD40 into electronics is bad, and happens too often.
A little, very little, very light oil on pots was the old school way back in the days when switch cleaner was just that and didnt contain lubricant - more likely Trych , Might be meant as a figure of speech anyway, said it my self often enough. It is old school though, I've even seen older engineers rub a pencil over the track ( works a treat as a bodge for knackeredpots btw )

WD40 does have its uses in electronics as well, but not usually in amps. It does what it says, Displaces Moisture, thatsa what WD means..

Daily Mail readers - especially if you're of Eastern European stock as well. ;)

Looked at that way, there are tose on here who would complain about Knees Up Mother Brown. And as for I've got a looverly bunch of Coco nuts....Well.

  3. Something.

If you want something drippy with a good bassline to end the night / send the punters to sleep, depending on how well you do it.

Not one you hear much nowadays. Went down well when we used to do it, even though I used to murder the bassline cos I couldnt quite pull it off. But that was about a hundred years ago now.

Anything by Gary Glitter, and Spasticus Autisticus by Ian Dury and the Blockheads. I was listening to that one last night and wondering the same thing.

Not many people qualified to sing that, but if you are - who's to complain ??

I was thinking about it today....and I'm almost certain my middle aged angst completly trumps teenage angst. I wanted to go out and write an EMO album entitle...Teenagers, you don't have a clue what life has in store for you.

Yep, would be great to be 18 again with all them worries wouldnt it ?

    We were rehearsing 'Getting Better' by the Beatles this week. Lyrics;

    - "I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved. Man I was mean but I'm changing my scene and I'm doing the best that I can"

It was a different world then.

Wonder if Heather Mills would agree.

At my age, theres loads of standards I wouldnt want to play for one reason and another. But they are just songs really arent they.

Nobodys mentioned Memphis by Chuck Berry...Often wondered whether it was meant as a dig at Jerry Lee. And why Elvis never got slated in a similar way for moving 14 year old Priscilla in to live with him.

Did anyone actually play this anyway?
Yep.

I've always thought "Claire" by Gilbert O Sullivan and "Save your kisses for me" by Brotherhood of Man were a bit dodgy - "Even though you're only three" ???!!! :o
Aww C'mon they were, or seem to be meant innocently. Theres not a paedo on every corner you know.

  8. For a start I'd drill a hole at the end of the split to top it getting any worse.

Airfix glue, but it depends on what type of plastic it is, its much like using solvent really, as from my youth I remember the plastic in Airfix kits used to melt a bit.If uts something that gets hot its unlikely to be the same type of plastic though I reckon..

Or if you can find some scrap bits of the same type plastic, weld it....Fumes can be a bit dody though, so I'd do it outside if I were you. Re inforce it by melting in bits of stiff wire, or a plate with holes in it.

  9. Depends on the plastic probably.

Years and years ago i worked for Scrivens as a hearing aid engineer. The behind the ear and in ear aids were in sealed pink or flesh couloured plastic cases which we used to cut off, then after repairing the electronics or whatever, fit a new case which was in two halves, by painting the edges with a solvent then pressing them together and the polish off the excess plastic, Different models needed different solvents though, cant remember all of them, but one was Methyl Ethyl Keytone, one was just Acetone, another was ( I think) Tri clorethyline.

Trouble with gluing plastics is that the glue need to flex, or not,in the same way as the plastic.

There are firms around that repair car trim and bumpers, by welding the plastic, dunno how the process works
but it does, and you cant see the join. Just wondering whether its worth you trying one of tese firms. Or could you use screws and nuts and fit a plate behind the crack ?

The car repairers option seems like the best bet to me though.

    Thanks, but which place?
Sorry, edited it out for some reason.

Might be worth trying Hobgoblin as well. Theyre in Digbeth, but have branches all over I think.

  11. This place is still going,

Theres a price list to give you an idea of costs etc. They'll fit internal mics for you as well, or at least they used to. Mate of mine at the time used to play in those German Bier Kellars that caught on in the 70s, and as has been said they sure aint easy to mic up.

For what its worth, he made a bloody good living playing Knees up Mother Brown and stuff like that.

Made me wonder where I went wrong sometimes.

WTF did I get 6.25mm from?
It's been a long day... 6.35mm is the equivalent not 6.25mm.

Yep, although the tip shape on those isn't the same as those we use today. :)
You can still find equipment in some of the older ATEs that use those.
They still vary nowadays, but I know what you mean. Still got a few of the round tip ones somewhere. and probably some ex ww2 throat mic ones, which had a flattened tip for some reason. and the body was about 1" diameter.

  14.
6.25mm is the metric equivalent of 1/4".
Equivalent jack Plugs are 6.35mm.

    Heres a bit of anorakyness for you;

The 1/4" jack is the oldest connector still in common use, was designed for manual telephone exchamges in the 19th century, and there are those who still use it on guitar leads and worry about whether the cable is curly or not.

    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
