  1. Not being able to see because hundreds of twonks are holding their phones above their heads taking videos that they'll never watch, and will just be a view of a hundred twonks phones anyway....

I've never been to Glastonbury, but all those flags in front of the stage is annoying enough on the telly - anyone with a flag obscuring the stage deserves an 'old-school Monsters of Rock plastic bottle attack.' 🤘

Is the red one, I hate white pickguards as they look so cheap, also I felt that as it was such a lovely colour it seemed a shame to have such a cr*p colour pickguard, the black pickguard was a huge improvement

Thanks @shoulderpetThat looks really classy, think I'll get a black one ordered too - some interesting mods there!

Anything is an improvement over white, can't stand white pickguards, they really make a bass look cheap. Just recently swapped the white pearloid pickguard on my Ibanez Mezzo for a black pickguard and it looks so much better

What colour is your Mezzo? I've got the sparkly sea foamish green version and am considering swapping to a black plate too. A picture would be ace if possible?🙂

White plates always look a bit 'cabaret' to me 😄

Either you play much larger pubs than my bands do, or you play much louder music!

Our biggest gig is a barn of a pub in West London where we routinely play (3rd set anyway) to 300 people. For that, we use a Mark Audio system where the 210s are both the subs and the base units, and then each has a linear array of 3" tweeters on poles above. Nothing heavy gets lifted more than about two inches.

I don't think we're particularly loud (Pardon?😉) but I think we do sound very full, rock and powered up pop with keys as well as guitar bass and drums. In normal times we do like to get the place jumping, literally - so it's loud enough to feel, but not deafening.

Small pubs, I tend to stay out of the tops - as my 112 Bergs don't need any help and sound fat - everything else is in the tops to whatever extent is required.

Subs are rare and usually just ticking over when used, never wound up. Unfortunately we don't have a Silvia 🙁- but singer and drummer in particular have a good ear and like you we mix using a digital desk.

I've not heard of Mark Audio before? All I can see online are just the drivers. Similarly, other than duos and backing track singers I've not seen a line array used by a band live - interesting that they work for you as they do look convenient.

Be great to be able to try different approaches, but that's tricky and no way I'm storing more than one rig.

Interestingly there are very few PA speakers in the mid price range that offer neo bass drivers and using ceramic magnets on big bass units is always going to mean a heavy cab as a result.

That's what I've noticed - you'd think that lightweight PA would be a much bigger and developed market than bass cabs really.

A pair of RCF 745's will cope with virtually anything. Keep a sub just in case.

These look great, wonder how they save about 5kgs compared to my 325's - usual challenge of 'affordable', light and good quality - pick any two!

Using a smaller speaker is a good shout if you are using subs anyway, lifting a 15 onto a stand when you are filtering out the bottom octave from your tops doesn't make a lot of sense, though we all do it so we can use the tops on their own for smaller gigs.

That's the rub isn't it? Most pub gigs we just use the 15s, larger pubs we'll bring one sub, big venues and outdoors it's both subs. We do get compliments on our live sound and I'm a bit suspicious of the small cabs as the ones I've heard have been loud, clear and powerful but somehow a bit 'too punchy' almost like they need to move a bit more air for the same volume - hard to put your finger on.

  6. Hi all

Lots of chat about light bass cabs, but I don't see much about light PA?

I have a cracking RCF rig, 2x325AS tops and two 15 inch subs.  It's well balanced together, modular and sounds great.

    But it's a heavy lift!

What's good but easier on the back out there?

  7. We have one outside in a pub garden on 29th May, and about another 10 booked inside pubs from early July onwards - I don't think indoor gigs will/should be happening before the next change in regulations in June.

What still isn't that clear to me is with the OUTSIDE gig does the 'groups of up to 30' apply to pubs i.e. could they have several tables with more than the current number of 6 (up to 30? Big table 😉) on each. I think it must as they've told us that they've already got bookings for a couple of tables of 10.

  8. I've been in Chris's shed whilst he was working on this. Great to see it launch. I know very little about the inner workings of pedals (or anything electrical actually...) but it was really interesting to see how he was effectively mapping every component of a pedal circuit diagram using software.

Hope it does well for him.🙂

I have similar issues - my favourite 5 (for today anyway) is the Ibanez Mezzo. 32 scale, 45mm nut and 18mm at the bridge. Would have been even better with a 44.5mm nut but I can't have everything!

I also have fairly small hands and a Mezzo - the 32" is whizzy and it's a great little bass for low cost 🙂 I liked the 32" so much so I picked up a second hand Warwick Rockbass Corvette 32" 5 string. That has a 43mm nut and 16mm (adjustable) spacing (using my daughters battered ruler). Cracking little bass if you can get one (at a sensible price), the B string on it is second only to my Dingwall NG2.

If you get the chance to try 32" scale then I'd recommend it. As your fingers aren't stretching so far horizontally, there is more finger length left vertically to cover the board.

  10. Yes, I have a German Corvette Standard 4 string passive too - Bubinga and Wenge - and that does feel that bit nicer than the Rockbass, has a bit more of that Warwick woody growl to the tone. But, I've been impressed with the Rockbass  - the preamp and pots are probably the weak point - and I like active basses to be passive switchable which this isn't - but then it was mint and about £300 second hand, so ...

  11. Another vote for RHCP - I saw them at Ipswich Town stadium, not exactly the heady heights but they were dull in the extreme. Chad and Flea tried, but failed, to lift any kind of performance from Kiedis.

Gary Moore with some session blokes - snooze fest.

David Lee Roth, having seen him with Vai and Billy Sheehan previously I had very high expectations, again this tour he was out with some session guys and played mostly bluesy/swing material - dire.

There was a long period when Iron Maiden were definitely 'off the ball' imho - bearing in mind their massive status they just ran out the same old tired backdrops and predictable show. With ever longer meandering tunes. Did seem a bit sloppy between the three guitarists too - I remember a Sonisphere event were Rammstein headlined the first night and it was incredible, Maiden seemed were tame by comparison the next night. However, they seriously upped their game for the recent Legacy tour, which was properly impressive, the best I've seen them in a long while - made me happy as I'd hate a band I have always loved to have drifted.
