  1. Hi all

I like to have control of our lights and change scenes etc. regularly through a gig - I currently use a Eurolite Bigfoot DMX foot controller - it has enough channels to cope with our LED Pars and Moving Heads and is pretty easy to operate live.

However, like all manual DMX controllers it is a PITA to program/adjust and set up or change scenes etc. Hours programming each step onto the light rig set up in my spare bedroom 😵

I'm drawn to the ADJ Mydmx Go - but that still seems beset with connection problems even years after launch. Just wondering what anybody else does that would enable easier programming (software based) and then enable different scenes/chases to be selected either via app or hardwired to a tablet or PC. There looks to be loads of options for software but obviously I need something pretty easy to trigger live and a lot of software looks more DJ/ light engineer focused.

Lastly, yes I know I could just use the built in programs and leave them to it - but they (in my experience) never look much cop and, with a couple of mates bands I know that do this, the constant repetitive 'school disco' flashing is actually unpleasant to watch.

    Cheers!

Elf 2x8 is expensive because it uses premium Faital drivers. Don't expect cheaper alternatives to perform the same.

    Yep, I get that.

In my case we are gigging mostly now with subs, so backline doesn't have to be 'premium' - I have some awesome Bergantino cabs already, they tend to overpower the PA in smaller venues, so weirdly I'm thinking  about something less capable.

What was the issue with the Shure for you?

I was going to ask how the HB compared to the Shure and it seems you're actually happier with the HB?

I think I mentioned it above, but I got dropouts in busy pubs. Happened with my Smoothhound too.

Ok if stood within a couple of meters but much further sometimes became glitchy.

Since being on 5.8 with the HB it's been fine and I can get about a bit. Shame because the other units were very nice and seem to work well for most, but very happy with the unit.

Thanks, how do you find the battery life on it?

It's fine. We usually play two sets, anything up to about 2 1/2  hours in total. I tend to stick the transmitter on to the unit to top it up in the break, but I have forgotten before and it's been fine.

The Shure has epic battery life, but just didn't work well for me.

Our band has the challenge of finding a new female rock singer for early 2024

OMG how difficult it is with female vocalists and rock !

Applicants so far .. can’t drive, or sung to backing tracks while stiff and expressionless behind a mic, or wants it to make a living or too far away

We are based in the derrière end of nowhere called Suffolk / Norfolk and it seems good singer’s especially female are the rarest of finds !!

We may have to change plans and get a guy instead !

Hi, our singer and his daughter (sorry she's already got a band, duo and solo thing going) are from Ipswich way and Roma (daughter) went to Music College in Norwich. I can ask them if they know anyone suitable. Can you let me know your band name/Facebook link etc. presumably with live vids on there and I'll see if they might know anyone? Also where you rehearse. You never know 🙂

If you don't fancy soldering - then I suggest asking @KiOgon to make you up a solderless loom with the controls you want (Don't forget the barrel output jack). You'll also need to measure the spaces between the body control holes to make sure the component connecting wires are long enough.

All the connections will have a little screw block. You might have to strip a few of the existing cables once you've disconnected them from the  existing system, but that should be about it. Dead easy job.

That's great - thanks very much!

The Ibanez Mezzo sounds bang on if the J pickup isn't used.

The stock pickup is fine - just rip out the preamp and go passive.

Sorry for the diversion - I'd like to do this to my Mezzo but have never ventured into electronics before. Have you got any steer on how you did this? I'm thinking VVTT might be handy. Cheers!

  8. First and only time (so far in 30 years) just this Saturday as we were doing a quick change at a festival - horrible minutes thinking it was the wireless, then the amp (I'd put a new battery in the day before so thought that couldn't be it) but popped the cover and found the soldered joint had come away on the battery clip.

Spare bass - TICK - back in business - phew.

The sound guys reckon it happens all the time and 9/10 people don't even have a spare battery, let alone a bass.

The major issue I had with my previous wireless set up was in a couple of theatres where they operated wireless lighting systems. Usually mid sound check when the lighting crew started turning lights on and off I would experience the odd drop out. Since I’ve owned the Shure GLXD, I’ve had no issues at all at those venues or even in busy pubs.

Yes, I did wonder about the wireless DMX dongles, so I set up with cables instead one night and still got drop outs.  Mine may well be an isolated case as the Shure has a great rep.

  10. I had the Shure GLXD - it was a lovely well made unit. It was fine on the occasional 'big stage' that I used it on, but would cut out in busy pubs. I did wonder if it was our own wifi and other wirelesses that caused it, or even my wireless dmx controls for the lights. But I could go to a good 20 metres away during sound check in some pubs with no issue (with all the above on) and it was great, as soon as the pub filled I'd frequently get issues.

Had the same with the Smoothound, which was also a great little unit (and Chris is a top bloke.) I did find that the aerials on the receiver station got in the way on a pedal board though if you 'get about a bit.'

I do still use the little strap mounted holder that I got to go with my Smoothound for the dongle, I just prefer it tucked up out of the way than sticking out of the bass.

    Personally, I wouldn't touch 2.4 again.

I better not have put the kiss of death on it now! 😁

  11. I've had both the Shure and Smoothhound, great when setting up and sound checking.... but numerous drop outs on both as soon as the pub filled with people ( and phones.)

My guitarist sometimes gets this on his Boss unit too.

I sold both and went cheap and 5.8ghz with a Harley Benton version that has a built in tuner on the receiver station. Not a single drop out since.

  12. It's an AER wedge, similar to the Markbass one but cheaper. Got it from Thomann when I ordered the table/stand.  https://www.thomann.de/gb/aer_tiltsystemschraegsteller.htm

It folds up flat and stows away easily - I think it might be a bit smaller than the Mark Bass version, but it works fine. My Bergs are the 'old school' ceramic 12s so not lightweight, it works fine.

This is the stand - a lot cheaper than other fancier makes but very solid https://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_mixer_stand.htm

  13. @Ashdown Engineering This looks to be available now direct from Ashdown and is an interesting package. Billed as a 250w 210.

I can't however find any clear stats on the head or cab. i.e. Is the cab 4ohm? Do you get the full 250w into the one 210 cab? What are the specs of the cab? Ported/sealed/power rating etc?

There is a demo video online but nothing much in terms of detail.

Will it be available through dealers so we might be able to give one a go?

Edit: Actually no, I have wronged poor old JC.   I have a cheapo Christmas compilation CD with a cover of “Fairytale of New York” sung by Máire Brennan of Clannad (who makes a pretty decent stab of her part) and Ronan Keating (who really, really doesn’t)....🙁

My wife has this CD - it's pretty festive - but that version of Fairytale sets my teeth on edge - horribly twee.
