  1. I voted other.

    It's complex.

As of today, I'm up to 3 basses again.

The dearest one is a slightly battered version of a British built bass, a Status.
The other two are a USA built bass - a Peavey Foundation, and a far east built Harley Benton fretless Jazz copy.

I love them all for different reasons. Two of the three are both beaters and also quality brands.
The one in the best cosmetic condition is the new low end bass. I'd hate to mark it, it's not a beater.

For a recent gig- the gig of my life - I hired. It was cheaper than flying one of the above to the gig.

To those of you with the collection of high end basses, I feel your pain.

  2. Facebook has its detractors, but I've snagged one or two gems on the selling groups.

This requires a little work to tidy it up, but it seems a fine thing indeed and has a lovely range of great tones.

It's a bit minging, but well worth cleaning up, I'd say.

  3. I was £55 from Bauder Audio in Pennsylvania. That was delivered to the gig and I had it available to me for the three days of the festival. I took it out of the case on the first day, it played lovely, and I left it alone after that. I then grabbed it again at load in to warm it up in my hands, played the gig, then handed it back.

I'll maybe contact Bauder and ask for a price to buy the thing.

  4. Anyone have / had one ?

I had the use of a hired one last weekend.
(flying my own bass there and back would have cost £130, this was £55 and was beautifully set up with fresh strings).

I now want one and it seems they're quite rare.
This had lace sensor pickups and Kubicki electronics.
Made around 1990-92 I think, in the USA.

    Looked sort of like this.

  5. I'd have had it in a moment, but if I'm picking up a 4 string fretted bass, it's my very un Status like Status energy. Wooden, with a headstock and the most magnificently playable neck.

Ever since I saw the video of your man playing one on youtube, I need no convincing of how good they are.
    I'd just never use it.

  6. Session 100w combo thing. graphic EQ and a 12" speaker.
    Sounded lovely at home.
The minute you took it anywhere else, it was pointless. Thin, weedy, useless.
I thought that 100w meant that was enough. I was yet to realise the importance of the speakers at that point.

Ashdown ABM300 into matching 8x10" cab. Mud. You shouldn't have to do that much to the EQ to stop it sounding terrible, and the sheer logic of the EQ section defies all sense. Good or bad.

  7. I've never been at all taken with the idea of a gig bag.
They may stop a bass from scratching, but I reckon that's about all.
Mechanical damage is still a distinct possibility and you certainly wouldn't load one into a van anything other than very very carefully.

I've always used a hard case, but those annoy me too.
The bass isn't always held securely, can rattle about inside, and they take up so much space.

I think I'm happy with the compromise I've now settled on.

These poly foam cases - or similar.

The bass can't rattle around, won't get scratched, and if the case takes a whack, the case is highly likely to absorb it. More so than a badly padded hard case which might just pass all of the impact to the bass, undiminished.

I won't be stacking bass bins on top, but I reckon these work well.

    Really?

I've always thought cheap = heavyweight....

My old Kay from 79/80 weighed a ton
    [/quote]

    Fair point.

I had a strat copy a few years back, and the neck dive was phenomenal because the neck weighed more than the body which seemed light enough to be balsa.

  9. I'd never really thought about bass weight much before.
It's never caused me a huge issue, but now I have two or three here, it's become quite apparent the difference in them.

Status Energy 4 string headed. 3.49kg or 7.7 lbs
    Squier Pro-Tone 5 string 4.32kg or 9.5 lbs
Harley Benton jb40 fl 5.01 kg or 11.04 lbs

I'm most surprised at the weight of the Harley Benton as I've been most used to cheapies being built from wood which was a bit flyweight.

I'm glad the fretless will be played mostly sitting down.

Have two longer sets coming up soon and the Five will be getting the vote for that, I reckon.
