  1. The gain control is set per instrument.  Where exactly to set the level is subjective but generally I'd have it so that the LED is nearly always green, but turning red briefly on the loudest notes (e.g. hitting the open E string as hard as you ever will).

Where is that position for your Munson fretless bass?

If it's near the max, or you can't get the LED to ever turn red, then your bass has low output.  Yes you could get a preamp; another possibility is that there is an issue with the instrument e.g. low pickup height or faulty pickup.

Once the gain is set correctly, then use the volume knob to set the output level.  If that is not loud enough to gig with, then you need a more powerful amp.  Bear in mind that if you get a more powerful amp, you might then need different speaker cabs.

Given that I don’t have funds for a new combo at the mo, I think I’m gonna have to go with a head to go with this cab for now, until I can squirrel away enough for a new rig. Any recommendations for a suitable head to match this cab welcomed… 😊

Since you were happy with the combo until it broke, the obvious suggestion is the MB 500 which is basically what is inside the MB210 combo.  It's discontinued but I saw there is one on eBay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225730329067).

If the combo amp is indeed dead, one option to consider is having your tech wire up the speaker to a socket i.e. to use the combo as a passive cabinet.  You can use the MB 500 head with either one or two cabs.

I was running the extension cab occasionally for bigger gigs, but the combo on its own was fine for most occasions.

Anyway, I’ve just had a call from my tech to say that he’s noticed that when it powers up there is a slight crackle (I hadn’t noticed) which he suggests could be the class D power unit on its way out. 😞

Perhaps this is a good time to evaluate if you want to commit to a rig built around the 210 MBE. Actually I  had the same rig at one point - MB 210 combo with the 210 MBE extension - but I moved on to a Barefaced Compact (the original 15" one) which was half the size and weight, yet louder.

I’m wondering what the advantages of this are? Presumably it’s a little less kit, but class D amps are pretty tiny. Do you feel the sound is better than a conventional amp/cab set up?

I previously had a Genz Benz Shuttle and a Big Baby 2 - flat-response, sounded good, and loud.  Advantages of an active speaker?  Bi-amped, power amps matched to speakers, DSP (including speaker protection), less expensive, tiltable, availability (you could buy a new one today).  The Barefaced's advantage is that it is lightweight.

what's a great clean sounding cab

A Big Baby 2/3 can go very loud.  You wrote in another thread that you are "playing with a trad jazz band (+1 drummer, Sax, trombone etc)".  A BB3 rig is likely massive overkill for that lineup.  If you're going with Barefaced perhaps their smaller Super Mini T would be better.

Having said that, if I was called for that gig I'd take my QSC CP12 (a small 12" active PA speaker).

I have a GK MB210 II extension cabinet that I might need to buy a separate head for, as my combo has gone in for repair and might not make it back. Can I run say an MB series head through the cabinet

You were running a combo with a second cab until the combo broke.  Presumably the combo alone was not enough, otherwise you wouldn't have been using the second cab with it.  So I don't see how using just the cab on its own will be sufficient.

I then got to thinking ... if I'm going to go for f/x amp modelling into the f/x return, why pay for all the preamp goodies ...

Exploring this line of thought, have you considered an active PA speaker, which are as flat-response as can be?  If you sell the C4 (which for comparison is 13.1kg) I think your budget will be ~£600.  There are many makes and models of active speakers, but here are some starting points:
    Yamaha DBR10 (350W, 10.5kg, £384)
    RCF HD 10-A (400W, 11.8kg, £479)
    QSC CP12 (500W, 13.7kg, £609)

Update 5th Dec: currently on hold...

    • 38mm nut
    • 17mm string spacing
    • 3.6kg (7lb 15oz)

Strings are La Bella "Deep Talkin' Bass" 760FM flats, 49-109, with maybe an hour of playing time on them (£39 new).  Truss rod was adjusted and is working correctly.

    Couple of points to note:

    • the pickguard has a warp towards the lower horn - cosmetic
    • the G nut slot is cut too low - I've put some foil underneath which addresses the issue satisfactorily    Update 4th Dec: brand new nut installed

Packed up in original boxes (including original packing and tags). Looks like new.
    Toal weight is 20kg.
has anyone send a bass or similar size package to Australia before? If so how much did it cost?

It would at least double your asking price. It doesn't make any sense to send this to Australia.
