In that case... what are you waiting for! :D My wife is the same usually, but we have a baby due in January so I've had to reign in the impulse buying... But I do think the baby needs a short scale bass!

I've genuinely managed to not sell my short scale Jag by saying our daughter might Ike to play 🤣

One of the most stupid/hilarious anti Harley Benton comments I've read recently (and they're almost all just cut and paste by people with zero real life experience) was a guy who says once he'd cut off and thrown away the awful strings it was a much better bass.

The instrument came with D'Addario strings as standard.

I've seen those. My only guess was that maybe the bass had been sat a while and they'd gone a bit dead.

But Stew, more importantly, shell pink or sea foam green? Maybe you need the jazz in one and the PJ in the other 🤣

It wasn't too much extra (can't recall the actual figure I'm afraid), but this was a treat to myself for a milestone birthday so worth a little bit on top to have something a bit special. It matches my custom CTM 300 which was from family for a previous milestone.

It could be said that I have a slight problem with chrome!

    Well, happy birthday!

Now I'm thinking about a custom one of my own. Purple tolex to match my Zilla cab (that went very well with my PF-500), grey face, black text. Or pimp it with a gold faceplate. Maybe for my 40th in a few years...

After the first gig out with it this weekend, I can finally post a picture of my current setup, including my new custom ABM EVO V! This thing is absolutely killer, and sounds particularly good through a big cab like the ABM 610. Definitely a little different to the EVO IV, in a similar way the EVO IV was different to the EVO III. Still working on the EQ, as is typical for the ABM as everything is quite interactive. Loving it so far!

Wow! Was there much additional cost for the custom faceplate?

  5. I'd also be in discussions with the rest of the band with a view to oust him.

    You've said he can'/won't:

    • Turn up to practice (vocal cues can be so helpful when learning a song!)
    • Communicate effectively
    • Show empathy for new/current band mates
    • Work with others to reach a compromise
    • Learn lyrics to songs he's been singing for 30 years

What can he do? Sounds like he's already bored of the material, but so stuck in his ways that he won't learn anything new. Is there any positive to having someone like that around?

I bought my 4005 second hand but it cost the seller £1300 to be built.

He had pickups custom made by House of Tone separately so I assume that price was without pickups.

The bass is mapleglo so no fancy paint finishes would've kept costs down, but it does have checker binding and crushed pearl fretmarkers. This was a few years back and the bass was a year old when I got it so prices have probably increased since.

The NBD thread is here for those interested.

That's not as much as I would have thought given the reputation they seem to have!

As well as being one of the worst bands ever, to me KISS stand for everything that's rank about crass, unfettered consumerism on this planet. Gene Simmons is a colossal t0$$3r. I can objectively see one or two merits in most bands I can't stand but not KISS.

Sorry didn't meant to be argumentative, I also can't stand KISS or Gene, but I can see why Gibson made that deal. They're probably likely to sell all of those!

And please no more run of the mill bassists' Signature models just because they're in famous bands. Gene Simmons anyone? Do people really buy Signature basses just because of the bass player in a fave band?? Extraordinary.

You say that, but hardcore KISS fans will buy almost anything branded or endorsed by the band - or at least they used to. I remember watching a TV programme years ago where Gene was marketing a KISS kasket (it is apparently still a thing). You wouldn't make that unless you think you'd be able to sell it!

  9. It's probably something to do with holding stock in limbo in a basket. It might stop other people buying it, or artificially decreasing stock levels on the backend if stuff is just sat there in 10 people's baskets. I'd imagine they've probably got a system that automatically clears your basket after X amount of time. It's a much smaller operation than something like Amazon and the website itself isn't the snazziest.

Maybe drop them a line and see if you can get the lowdown on how to best use their site?

  10. It sounds like you've pretty much made your mind up, but another vote for an ABM600 here. I gigged an Ampeg PF500 for years and it was good, but the Ashdown just sounds so much better to my ears. Much more versatile, articulate, easier to carry (yes, it's heavier but it has a handle!) and the valve drive really adds a bit of warmth and character. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

  11. After not being decisive enough to spend a relatively small amount on one pedal, I got something that will probably replace everything on my board 😅 It is an ex-demo unit I found on Reverb that I offered a bit under the asking price on, so I feel like I got a good deal. Plus they are an authorised seller, so the warranty is still valid in case something happens to it!

I've only had an hour or so playing it through headphones, but it sounds huge! It also hasn't left me with option paralysis (yet). It's fairly easy to work out how to make it do my bidding and I've not referred to the manual yet. I've got a working patch that I can take to practice on Sunday and see how it pans out. There will undoubtedly be some tweaks required, but it seems to sound great on its own and I think it'll work pretty well into my amp.

I've not even tried any parallel processing yet. All of the ods/distortions/fuzzes have got a clean blend plus an extra bass boost/cut, so it's pretty easy to dial in something very useable there quickly.

We're going to be putting a demo together soon and I think this will be amazing for getting a solid bass sound for that.

The only niggle I had found was that the tuner couldn't handle a low B. Turns out I needed to turn up the input gain and it was all fine. Not quite as accurate as my Polytune, but good enough. Also when I tried one out in PMT, the touchscreen must have been turned off because it definitely does do what I expect it to do.

XLR or balanced jack outputs are the main omission on the hardware side. Still not really sure why they were left out, but I decided it was a compromise I could live with. I can always get a DI box to put on my board.
