1. I've just acquired a new Yamaha TRB 1004 and was trying to identify the strings it's come with. They've no silks and the ball ends are different colours - brass, red, black and green from E - G. I've never come across them before but they sound great. Anyone any ideas?

    Thanks,

  2. When I was younger - about 20 years ago - I used to have guys who were younger than me who would turn up to gigs and just stand there staring at my left hand. And, of course, I used to think I was the dog's bollocks! I like to think I've got a bit more humility now and I can recognise that, yes, I was a competent player in a small town, but that was as far as it went. And, of course, if your playing draws that much attention to itself them it might be a lot of things but music is unlikely to be one of them! So, now, twenty odd years later, I had the best compliment I've ever received when someone came up to me after a gig a few weeks ago and told me how much they liked my sound. And that's because, for all his chops, the thing I really connected with about Jaco's playing was the incredible sound he got. I still can't listen to the intro of 'Dream Clock' or 'Edith and the Kingpin' without thinking of someone crying. To be able to produce something with that much emotion in just a few well chosen notes would be good enough for me. I mean, I'm sure my playing might have made a few people in the audience cry in the past, but you know what I mean...

  3. Hi Ian,

Okay, I'll drop Bernie an e-mail. The 5 string I may have available (I stress may) is a Blueburst Zoot Custom with EMG Musicman and Jazz pickups and an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp. It's also got LED's. I've had it a few weeks and am still getting to grips with it as I've always been a 4 string player. I'm finding it easy enough to get on with but if I don't use the low B then I'd have to admit there's little point in keeping it really.

    Cheers,

  4. Ian,

Can you tell me anything about the electrics - are the pickups single coil or humbuckers? What's the preamp spec? I've got a five string I'm thinking about moving on (and really only thinking about at the moment) which you might be interested in.

    Cheers,

  5. No one's fault but my own for being something of a tit. Still, they were charming enough to point that (apparently) they would be only too willing to loan me £7.5k any time I feel like it. They're good like that, banks, don't you think?

  6. I dropped you guys a small donation by Paypal yesterday, realised my Paypal account was still set up to take funds from my Bank Account rather than my credit and that, being the day before pay day, said donation would take me over my overdraft limit! Spent the next 20 mins on the phone to the bank sweet talking them so they wouldn't hit with a unarranged borrowing charge. Oh, how we laughed!

  7. BC is 44, short, balding and at least slightly overweight. Despite have a relatively responsible job, has yet to work out how to insert an avatar in his signature. Been playing bass for not far short of 30 years. Nearest brush with fame was his band appearing in a 'Top Ten Worst Band Names of All Time' poll in a Middlesex Poly student magazine in the mid-80's when playing with Lord Lucan and the Lookalikes back in Colchester, from whence he originally came. Lives in Chester with Wifey and works in Wrexham (hi, beerdragon!). Desperately tries to make up for singular failure to achieve any kind of attention through his (self-styled) bass playing virtuosity by participating in amateur acting. Thereby finding another pastime he achieve lasting lack of recognition...Great personality though! BC. xxx

  8. Bass Culture signed in and ready for action - with the added bonus that I've got a space in the middle of my 'handle'. Thanks to all the Admins and Mods. I'm in awe of anyone who can this kind of technical stuff. And I'm not saying I lack confidence in our latest incarnation but I'm going to register 'Bassnatter' and 'Bassbollocks' just in case!
