1. I've played bass for 30 years and had never owned a TE amp - I've been through Acoustic, Peavey, Peterson, Hartke, Markbass and SWR. Just recently I picked up a second hand TE AH300SMX and took the plunge with one of Alex's Compact cabs and I have been smiling like a simpleton ever since. I've bastardized a folding piano bench to get the 'rig' off the ground and closer to my ears and it is simply fantastic. I really rated my MB SA450 and would love to hear that through the Compact but, right now, I'm as sorted as I've thought I'd get. Sound-wise, I'm just made up with the TE and Compact combo and have been kicking myself that I've avoided TE gear up until now.

  2.
I have the chorus and (IMO) it is very nice.
I can't hear any difference between 'it' and a Boss.
Okay, well I've picked up a second hand CEB-3 and taken the plunge on one of the Boss Hog Distortion pedals at the same time. Damn those Wednesday afternoon dips into ebay. Here's hoping...

  3. A midweek bump before ebay at the weekend. If anyone's debating about this though do drop me a line - I'd much rather it went to a Basschatter and if it's a case of cashflow problems at this precise moment I'm sure something can be worked out as I'm not desperate to turn this round urgently or anything.

    Cheers,

    Mark

  4. Yeah, the blurb makes coy references to Boss, doesn't it? It's almost asking us to assume they're the same units! I wonder if that's clever marketing or if, in actual fact, they use the same or similar design and components. It looks like the chassis are virtually identical - colour and front edge aside. If the sound quality is the same, what's not to like?

  5. Okay, essentially we're 'just another covers band' but the sounds been coming together over the last couple of months of rehearsals and we're beginning to think we may be on to something, so we've bitten the bullet and entered ourselves for a Battle of the Bands competition in sunny Wallesey. If any BC-ers are at a loose end, pop along. If nothing else you will get to hear one of Alex's Barefaced Compact's used in anger (together with my Overwater and Trace AH300SMX - mmm, nice)!

    Pip pip!

  6. Having just taken delivery of my Barefaced Compact and an ebay-purchased Trace head I now have my SWR Working Pro 12 200w combo amp for sale.

I’ve only owned this for about five months, having purchased it new from The Bass Merchant. I bought it to use with my 7 piece band as we were putting everything through the PA and needed a good quality combo to use for on stage monitoring – something the tilt back design of the SWR is ideally suited to. More or less immediately the band got their next gig blown out and took a Summer hiatus! Anyway, a new band with a smaller line up has meant a move back to a amp & cab set up, so the SWR has to go.

It’s an excellent sounding combo with a number of useful ‘real world’ features, such as the Aural Enhancer (can’t tell you how it works but it certainly added a bit of presence and definition in the mid range, I found). It delivers its full 200w into the internal speaker, meaning it’s plenty loud enough for rehearsals and small to medium sized gigs. Below are a couple of useful links from the SWR website that will do a better job than I of describing all the amp’s facilities. The first is the Specifications and the second a PDF of the manual:

    http://www.swrsound.com/products//view_spe...ro%26trade%3B12

    http://www.swrsound.com/support/manuals/pd...rkingPro_12.pdf

Condition is excellent. It’s never been gigged and only been used in a half a dozen rehearsals. The sound from the 12” speaker is tight and punchy and is really is a good compromise between power, performance and portability (all the ‘P’s, in fact!). This is the wee beasty:

This cost £449 from The Bass Merchant just five months ago so I’m really looking for £325. No offers and I can’t take Paypal at that price unless the buyer pays the fees. Sorry but a £125 loss in five months is really as much as I can take and, in all honesty, at that price it’s a bit of a snip. Can’t ‘post’ as I’ve no packaging but you’re welcome to try before you buy if you fancy a trip to the fair city of Chester. Oh. I can deliver up to a reasonable distance too. Oh, it will also be supplied with both the manual and the guarantee regristration card, which I've not yet sent off. Thanks for looking folks.

  7.
Hi John,

If you're not in a hurry you could join the Chester posse, towards the end of the first cab's route. Alternatively I could send a third cab out and it can work its way backwards along that route.

    Alex
On that note I am now the proud owner of one of Alex's Compact's. Anyone who fancies who lives in the Chester vicinity is welcome to pop round and/or come along to a suitable band rehearsal to give it a try. Big up for Alex - terrific cab! And I've left heavier things in the toilet on occasions!

  8. Well that's as fair a comment as I've heard for a while. I love the basic tone and combined with the Compact (although, being brand new, the cab will take a little while top completely settle down I guess) I thin it's going to do for me for the kind of small/medium pubs gigs I do. So, sage words, perhaps a service is in order!

  9.
Hi Mark,

With no more than 6db of boost or cut at any of the sliders, this amp should not be distorting.

Do you have the input gain stage set correctly?
i.e: The red should barely (if ever) ever illuminate.

p.s. Do not boost the red sliders on the graphic.... cut only!
Hi Mr T,

Yeah I downloaded a manual and followed the procedure for setting the input gain, and checked when playing last night that it was only going into red occasionally, so I think that was okay. I think the red slider was cut slightly too. I'll be able to have a more conscientious play this evening, I think.

    Pip pip!

  10. Dear all,

Just acquired an AH300SMX head off ebay. It's in very good condition and looks as though it's been well looked after. There's a bit of crackling on most of the pots but nothing a bit of judicious know twiddling or carefully applied contact cleaner can't remedy, and nothing that seems out of the ordinary for a 10 year old amp. When it first arrived I didn't have a cab so tried it through a monitor speaker and then the internal speaker on my combo. On both occasions it broke up very badly when playing anything below A on the E string. That said, both speakers were under powered compared to the amp output so I put it down to a mismatch. Yesterday my new Barefaced Compact arrived, just in time for my band rehearsal last night and even with what should be an ideal match in terms of power there was some distortion in the same range of bass notes - though not to the same extent.

I'll be honest and say it's a good few years since I've used an amp with a graphic rather than parametric (or semi-parametric) EQ and I'm wondering if I'm overloading by incorrect use of the EQ. I've set it up in favour of the valve preamp slightly, a bit of bass and slightly less treble compression and a bit of bias towards the bass EQ. The graphic is set up in a rather nice looking wave shape (if i do say so myself!) with a peak in the low mids and trough in the low treble, and flat at each end of the spectrum. So, I suppose the question is this - am I being heavy handed with the EQ (no more than 6db cut or boost on any wave band though) or is this distortion sympomatic of a problem with the amp. It's worth mentioning that the signal is lot cleaner if I switch the EQ out completely though I didn't have a lot of time in rehearsal to establish exactly where and how the distortion occurs. Any comments / experiences would be welcome.

    Cheers,

    Mark

  11. The link below is to a company who Trace themselves suggested as the place to go for any pre-2005 (i.e. Peavey) Trace repairs/maintenance/servicing. I've not actually used themselves, so couldn't comment on any elements of their service but they do say they're able to supply a replacement send level pot after the one on my newly acquired AH300SMX broke off in transit. Here goes:

    http://www.electronicmusicservices.co.uk/traceelliot/

As you'll see, they're based in Southend, which obviously implies they've got some ex-Trace staff on board.

  12.
I just love these things - I learned on one back in the mid '70s. I simply can't justify a purchase but good luck with the sale (the colour and competition stripes make this an unusual and desirable bass)
My older brother used to have one in a kind of off orange with 'go faster' stripes over the forearm bout, I seem to remember. This would be in the early 70's mind, before he picked up his Rickenbacker.

  13. This is just a thought but in Hi Fi circles it is received wisdom that both speakers and others components need a good few hours 'playing in' before they start to perform at their best. I'm just wondering if instrument amplification and speaker cabinets are the same and that new instrument speakers too only start performing at their best after they've had 20-30 hours playing in. Any comments/thoughts?

  14. Sorry if this is a semi-hijack of this thread but I've just won an AH300SMX on ebay which I'm really chuffed with (aside from the send level knob on the back getting broken off in transit). Would there be any merit in changing the valve in it or were the original valves good enough quality as is?

    Thanks,

    Mark

  15. Dear All,

Are there any Warwick bass amp users out there who can comment on the Pro Fet 3.3 for me? I'm changing back to an amp & cab set up from a combo and have ordered one of Alex's excellent Compact cabs. The budget's not too big for the amp at present and I've seen the 3.3 available for less than £200. I've no experience of Warwick amplification at all and was wondering if anyone would care to share any thoughts about the quality and tone of this amp for me! It seems to be well enough specced - 4 band EQ, compressor, tuner out, DI etc. etc. but how well does it do the do ?

    Thanks,

    Mark
