I'd be really interested to see if they introduce any new models or if they re issue one of their older designs. Since Mark King has recently switch back to Jaydee maybe they are revamping their bass line.

I would imagine that they'll do the Alex Venturella bass. I mean, I played it at the bass show almost 7 years ago.

I await the Kingbass v10 with  (affects high pitched squeal of excitement) "everything just like Mark has it!!" Yes, that is sarcasm.

Please, some sort of Buzzard replacement?! Like was suggested might happen in 2007 when I took mine to Rob for a service. The Level 42 thing has now become very grating. I wonder how many Chris Wolstenholme variants with people playing Hysteria badly rather than Mr Pink it will take before some form of new model may come out. Hopefully not fanned frets either.

If you're a metal or rock play then a lower action probably isn't your bag, i have no idea as i am not a rock / metal bassist.

That's most definitely not true. I play metal and my action is lower than the Mariana Trench.

I Read a John Pattituci article, also repeated by Janek Guizdala, where he said a high action is better for tone and articulation, which makes sense.

Frankly, as Janek Gwizdala plays a bass that looks like a melted plastic bath toy, I'll take his opinion with a skip load of salt. Plus, it depends how you define "articulation." For me it's hearing every percussive click and snap of my playing. You will never get that with a high action.

So I did ask for feedback because it was that mysterious. I was told two reasons from the singer/songwriter/leader in so many words, down the road, the tension between me and and the LG wouldn't be beneficial. And, sorry what your playing isn't what we wanted. Your lines work easily but not for us.

    1) I had been playing with them since December. After two tryout rehearsals, they asked me aboard. Then played a gig after a month and rocked it out.

    2) within 30 mins of playing with them for the first time, lead guitarist says "don't overplay". I didn't react I just thought in my head "already I just met you and learning how you guys play". I treated this gig and respected it exactly like my 9-5, professional.

    3) This past month, waited 3 weeks for drum tracks to be done. Finally it was my turn. Before I even recorded a note, days before I wanted to get the situation straight because some beats had changed. Talking to the drummer, I clarified that I have parts written but some ideas I'd like to try. "Oh yea man, please experiment" singer guitarist - "we like that your not a strictly root note player" I said ok let's do this. 7 hrs in to my session, lead guitarist shows, and says "your runs are perfect but your over playing" finally after hearing this 4 times I said I disagree and I think the lines accent everything very well. I went home, messed with just root notes with some of the material and it just sounded dull. I messaged them and said the bass doesn't walk on the vocals or the guitar lines, I'm not sure where this coming from. Did even get a chance to go back and give them what they wanted. Fired the next day.

Sounds like the lead guitarist is a tosser. I'm surprised he still has his own teeth. Don't get upset. Find something where what you do is respected and valued.

  5. Okay then, here we go.

    Nuts slimmer than 42.5mm.

Necks which are massively thick from front to back.

Necks that have a massive taper in them.

    Single cuts.

    3 point bridges.

    Coil switching.

Bolt on necks with massive heels and little upper fret access.

Crap tone circuits. Specifically, Spector Tonepump being a classic example.

  6. So, last Friday, my band Terbium put out our debut single "Hey Ya." It's progressive material per se. For those of you wondering, I'm playing a Wal.

As a second shameless plug, I also produced this (recorded/mixed/mastered) at my own studio (www.eraxsound.com). If anyone needs anything done, basschat discount applies.

I had the 61 key version of that about 15 years ago.

Is Doug not involved with Darkglass anymore? From watching the reviews, it does seem more than a little underwhelming to say the least, especially being almost £900.

Xliddx (Nigel) is one of my Facebook friends. He is a really nice guy and gigs regularly as Covid allows. It's a shame he's not on here any longer.

He's one of my Facebook friends as well and a thoroughly lovely guy. It's always great to chat to him.

Yes, he was brilliant wasn’t he? A pompous fantasist in the mould of Capt. Mainwaring or Basil Fawlty.

Remember the charity bass relay we did? I asked him if he’d like to get involved, based on the frequent high-profile gigs he did. It soon became clear it was all bullshine. Mind you, he wasn’t the only one…….😉

The best one for me was when he started slating Entwistle. I then found a video of his band playing 5:15. Badly. He was also playing the bass part very badly. I remember laughing so hard I felt I could asphyxiate as I could play that song better when I was 19.

I mean, all of us here know what we're good at and what we're not so good at. That's regardless of what genre or style of player you are. I'm happy to admit my technical and professional failings.

In truth, I miss his "Legend in his own mind," crap as it's so risible.

  10. I miss JTUK. His constant proclamations of being amazing and what his vastly excessive tech requirements were for foldback monitoring.

Then you find out he's playing "The Tickled Trout," in front of a massive plasma screen showing the FA Cup replay of Stoke v Crewe.

How he only played with "named professionals," and was so amazingly talented at bass he could sneer at some of the greatest players to ever pick up the instrument yet provided no evidence of how he was apparently better.

    What a tool.

With Mark King now exclusively playing Jaydee's at his most recent gigs, I wonder if this has any bearing on the stop on new orders?

I don't think that has anything to do with it and I of course was being sarcastic. MK fans have done very well for Status. I think Rob is probably doing the Electro 4 and maybe the Alex Venturella bass. Who knows, they might even update their website.

  12. I think that this kind of makes the point I said a few years ago. If you could get an AO with saveable midi presets, wouldn't that be worth £500? Now, I actually like the AO, but I don't really use mine as it's mainly for clients at my studio.

Frankly, if this was something that I'd use, I'd be getting one.

Yeah, I hate it when stuff sounds good.

But to be fair, being a bassist in progressive metal, it’s the Darkglass/Dingwall tone that is becoming very boring and predictable, but it depends how it’s used.  Darkglass are capable of much more, and the Alpha Omega circuit is the most diverse of the lot.

I agree completely Kev. The Dingwall/Darkglass thing is getting very stale. However, as a progressive metal bass player myself, I await claims of "passe" when my bands album comes out next year. "Wal and Tech 21? He must be an agent of the counterculture! Seize him!!"

Out of all the Darkglass pedals, the AO to me is the best. I'd certainly be interested to try this one.

  14. A few years ago at the Bass Guitar Show I had a laugh about the price of the bag which was £90 then. I said that as it had memory foam padding in it you could use it as a pillow on the tour bus.

However, at getting towards £200 for a bag, I honestly wonder what their costs and overheads could be to warrant such a ludicrous price.

Does Nolly own one? Does the styling of the bag go with my 5 string Dingwall tuned in drop G? Does it have extra pockets to put a couple of other Darkglass pedals and a set of clippers so that you can still sound and look like Nolly? Does it come with a fake beard? These are questions we need answered.

@Wolverinebass Ring any bells, bonny lad?  Lol

    It does indeed.

A few years ago I went to see @NancyJohnsonplay a gig directly after the SE Bass Bash. The sound engineer was periodically going to the toilet and it was obvious to me that him and his mates were getting completely nutted on coke. So, for quite a lot of any of the band's sets he was in the toilet with a golf ball up his nose. I can only say that the sound wasn't great either. Surprising that.

You wouldn't say Metallica albums 5, 6 and 7 have good mixes? They're not my favourite, musically, by any stretch, but they are sonically magnificent, no doubt about it.

That entire OP video is a sham, by virtue of the fact that the AJFA bass tone is on there. Nobody heard that bass tone until the Guitar Hero stems came out. You can't hear it on the album so how can it be a bad tone in the context of the album?  If it's just a load of bedroom maestros judging based on hearing it in isolation, and beaching about what sounds bad in isolation, which it is, then it's entirely pointless. How much sneering has been done on here about guitarists with bedroom tone, rather than a tone which works in a band context? I appreciate the guy needs to continually get his on his channel, but it's a tabloid-level approach to what could have been an educational discussion.

The Black Album is merely okay and I must admit I've never been a fan of that mix. If you dissociate the sound from the songs (which is quite difficult as the songs are great) you'll hear it differently. Kind of like Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden. Sonically, it's not the best, but the songs are amazing so they get away with it. Load and Reload the bass is just mush and buried for the most part. Plus the material isn't their best through that period anyway. Ultimately, they'll never get stuff remixed, fixed, admit they made stupid decisions or apologise about it. I have very little time for any of the members of Metallica (aside from Trujillo) as I think that they're just not very nice people who deflect everything negative about them and whatever decisions they've made.
