  1. I appreciate that this might a fashion thing, but has anyone else how the default nut width of manufacturers of 4 string basses has got thinner over the last few years? I also appreciate that it's personal preference and that folk will say that you should be able to play any bass regardless, but certainly for me at least that's not true.

Most manufacturers are going for 40mm. For example, I bought a 2nd hand Schecter Raiden a few years ago. Advertised as 42.5mm. Lies!! It's 40 and I find it a bit uncomfortable even though it sounds monstrous. So, discount Precisions, sterling ray 34s, Rickenbacker, Status (when they were still open) and what you have left? Not much from the new market if you discount custom instruments.

Has anyone else noticed this? I appreciate if this is what is going to sell, then I may be behind the times. However, it's disappointing in some ways. Especially when Musicman slimmed the stingray neck back down a year ago.

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this.

Is the use of particularly British idioms cricket in this situation though?

This is not Vietnam! There are rules!!

Do you think I watched all my friends die face down in the muck so that this guy can do a bad audition on a fretless and brag about it all over town?

What about other bassists they couldchoose, there are plenty of weak, slow and smiling bassists around. If i play just standarts and simple grooves, i can't show them that i can be better.

"Better," is a subjective point of view. If you want to show off, join a djent band and do loads of tapping. The more you dig your heels in over this the less folk will take you on. I used to think like that until my late 20s. Throw everything in and it'll be fine. Some bands don't dig on that level of nutterdom and won't hire you because of it. What I've learned is that yes, I could (and can) play as flamboyantly as I want, but does it make anything better? Usually the answer is "no." It's all picking your moments in the context of the genre.

I'm guessing the attitude is one born of frustration, but seriously, calm down. If they're not into it, you won't win anyone over, by just saying you're "technically superior." Quite the reverse.

Quite frankly, he’s incredibly lucky that it hasn’t already happened. Sooner or later he’ll rip off someone who will be quite happy to pop round with some big mates for a little chat.

I must admit, I agree. I can imagine the line from Lock, Stock being used, "If you don't want to be counting the fingers you haven't got or sharing a bed with the antichrist....."

There will probably be someone who can't afford getting ripped off who will know a few folk, then it'll all go south for Mr. Mason.

  5. It seems that this has gone way past "a couple of sansamp pedals." It does seem that defrauding venues is now on the agenda as well as bands. Whilst I appreciate that the Cops are immensely constrained in terms of budgets and personnel, surely we're getting to the point where they have to take notice as we're now talking thousands and thousands of pounds, not just a couple of hundred quid on scamming people on pedals.

Since the guy is stupid enough to do this stuff and have his address freely available on the internet, I'd imagine it's only a matter of time before things turn nasty and people pay him a visit in light of no legal action being taken. Or they might just do that anyway.

  7. I hope Rob is fully in remission and that he enjoys his semi retirement as he put it. I would imagine that they'll be outsourcing instruments and some form of announcement will be made in the near future.

From a personal perspective, I've met Rob and Dawn a few times and they're lovely people. As the owner of the last status Buzzard, I'm happy that he made that bass as to me it is the greatest bass ever made.

The irony is the week before they stopped taking orders I was going to order a Stealth. I had the email in draft and was just mulling over an option or two. I've literally been awaiting them to take orders again. I guess I'll have to see what goes on.

One thing is for sure. If the brand comes back it won't be "Status by Warwick" after the Buzzard debacle in 2005.

I bet within a year it's being built in the far east and the price will come down.

I don't think it's a bad price for a UK built item, but as you say, it's not really competing against other UK built stuff.

I'm not sure a lack of 2ohms is a real problem though. Most working bass players who would be the market for this would be letting the PA do a lot of the work leaving the cab for on stage monitoring.

Yeah. I just think it's a bit too pricey. Then again, I thought that about the Geezer head as it really wasn't that great when I tried one.

The 2 ohm thing was an observation as my GK Fusion 1200 cost a lot less than that and does 2 ohms. As does a fair amount of EBS stuff as well. The Ashdown stuff of old used to do 2 x 575W. Not anymore it appears.

I have nothing against Ashdown as they make some great stuff, but the hit/miss rate of things they have is now being compounded by a whopping price increase which had started to happen as far back as the B-Social debacle.

  9. I saw that the other day. £1500 for that is total crack pipe territory. Its not light, it doesn't do 2 ohms and appears to be not that much different from recent models.

I appreciate that Ashdown are trying to reposition themselves as some sort of musical lifestyle brand what with headphones and studio monitors. However, they're not Darkglass and won't sell many of them.

Yes, they made a few prototypes of the V-bass, a cross between an S2 Classic and a Jackson Warrior:

Yeah. I played that at the Bass Guitar show. I remember being quite excited until I realised that the top wing wasn't the right angle to lay your elbow on like the buzzard. It's just a touch too low. I remember it was tuned very low like G#, but it was in some open tuning that I can't quite remember offhand. It wasn't a bad bass in any way, but it wasn't the environment for trying it out properly with everyone slapping themselves within an inch of their lives. I guess we'll see in what format it comes out in. The one I played was a bolt on in matt black with the body being alder if I remember right. Maybe it might be neck through or one piece graphite. We wait and see.

I remember Status put up a picture of a Barracuda bass in salmon pink just before they stopped taking orders, so that's probably a thing as well. The Electro 4 has been in redevelopment for almost 2 years, so maybe that as well? Who knows.

I'd be really interested to see if they introduce any new models or if they re issue one of their older designs. Since Mark King has recently switch back to Jaydee maybe they are revamping their bass line.

I would imagine that they'll do the Alex Venturella bass. I mean, I played it at the bass show almost 7 years ago.

I await the Kingbass v10 with  (affects high pitched squeal of excitement) "everything just like Mark has it!!" Yes, that is sarcasm.

Please, some sort of Buzzard replacement?! Like was suggested might happen in 2007 when I took mine to Rob for a service. The Level 42 thing has now become very grating. I wonder how many Chris Wolstenholme variants with people playing Hysteria badly rather than Mr Pink it will take before some form of new model may come out. Hopefully not fanned frets either.

If you're a metal or rock play then a lower action probably isn't your bag, i have no idea as i am not a rock / metal bassist.

That's most definitely not true. I play metal and my action is lower than the Mariana Trench.

I Read a John Pattituci article, also repeated by Janek Guizdala, where he said a high action is better for tone and articulation, which makes sense.

Frankly, as Janek Gwizdala plays a bass that looks like a melted plastic bath toy, I'll take his opinion with a skip load of salt. Plus, it depends how you define "articulation." For me it's hearing every percussive click and snap of my playing. You will never get that with a high action.

So I did ask for feedback because it was that mysterious. I was told two reasons from the singer/songwriter/leader in so many words, down the road, the tension between me and and the LG wouldn't be beneficial. And, sorry what your playing isn't what we wanted. Your lines work easily but not for us.

    1) I had been playing with them since December. After two tryout rehearsals, they asked me aboard. Then played a gig after a month and rocked it out.

    2) within 30 mins of playing with them for the first time, lead guitarist says "don't overplay". I didn't react I just thought in my head "already I just met you and learning how you guys play". I treated this gig and respected it exactly like my 9-5, professional.

    3) This past month, waited 3 weeks for drum tracks to be done. Finally it was my turn. Before I even recorded a note, days before I wanted to get the situation straight because some beats had changed. Talking to the drummer, I clarified that I have parts written but some ideas I'd like to try. "Oh yea man, please experiment" singer guitarist - "we like that your not a strictly root note player" I said ok let's do this. 7 hrs in to my session, lead guitarist shows, and says "your runs are perfect but your over playing" finally after hearing this 4 times I said I disagree and I think the lines accent everything very well. I went home, messed with just root notes with some of the material and it just sounded dull. I messaged them and said the bass doesn't walk on the vocals or the guitar lines, I'm not sure where this coming from. Did even get a chance to go back and give them what they wanted. Fired the next day.

Sounds like the lead guitarist is a tosser. I'm surprised he still has his own teeth. Don't get upset. Find something where what you do is respected and valued.
