1.
Thanks man, I like the Jazz Bass idea
I think the first question you should ask is what won't you get sick of playing and structure your first inroads around that.

    For example, if the youtube clip of the MM playing really gets you off, then why not get a used Fender Jazz? (Watch the pickup spacing on the jap made MM isn't the same as the 70's basses though, but the Geddy Lee Jazz is). Hearing the sound you like will give you pleasure and satisfaction, helping you to stay motivated.

    OK, so its not going to a do-all bass but it's still going to give you an broad range of sounds to play with from p-bass-ish all the way to Jaco's fruity parping via Marcus. Thats pretty damn good for one instrument and I think there's a lot of common sense in going with a jazz as a only bass.

    An excellent explanation - the best I've encountered on the web.

  3.
Thanks for the replies - as I said I was sort of thinking out loud and it's interesting to see other peoples thoughts

    I guess I miss the vibe that BW had and maybe I should accept that things have changed.

    Just seemed odd that on the one hand you can have posts being deleted without any explanation and on the other hand have a relaxed approach (compared to some forums) e.g. the Mccann thread and the occasional way the sales sections operate.
John, the appalling reliability of Bassworld and the lack of involvement from the bloke who owned it meant it was far from relaxed. As I mentioned earlier, drop us a PM with specifics on where there's inconsistency if it's a real concern for you, and we can discuss things in more detail.

    Jewish tailors? :)
Here is a company I will dealing with as their UK agent, any ideas?
    "Jerzy Drozd"
If the name is Polish in origin then it might not have the correct accent mark. You'd normally use a soft zhhhh sound which isn't used in English pronounciation, but its the same sound as in Zhivago. If there was a dot over the z then the sound would be a little harder.

    Jerzy = Jerzhy
    Drozd = Drozhd

  6.
I have a black widow speaker you could totally buy to load this, if anyone is interested.
Alemboid also has an old EV speaker he's willing to donate I believe too. I tried it and it works. You just need to be aware that there's a large-ish hole in the back where the amp subwoofer module sat.

  7. My connection has been well iffy for the last few days - hence I've missed this one.

    What we ask the mods to do is to use their common sense. Obviously there is bound to be some inconsistency in this, and that's where Ped and I will discuss things with them if they need some support. The mods need a sense of autonomy because this is how they build their experience.

    If you think that there's some inconsistency in how the forums are moderated PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let us know via PM using examples. I agree that consistency is important and if there's a specific issue somewhere then Ped and I can raise it with the mods for discussion simply so we are all clear about the best way to deal with the same situation next time.

    Its all about striking the right balance at the end of the day and helping to ensure the focus within the forum stays positive.

  8. There are two standard 'vintage' compressors modelled after the red and blue MXR pedals I believe. They're a little leaden sounding although the blue sounds good for slap. You can programme in your own compressor settings to whatever degree you like. Might be fun to see if you can create a version of Trace's dual compressor using the crossover?

    Like Paul suggests, if you're going to have it on all the time, its worth getting a separate compressor as it will only suck up the processing power unnecessarily.

  9. As far as I'm aware, we're all at the mercy of the credit card companies. They can more or less set whatever rates they like within reason as none of us are obliged to use them. We all know the financial institutions pride themselves on their ability to confuse otherwise straight forward matters so lesser mortals can't understand whats going on.

    Oof! The wood is gorgeous, not so keen on the body shape though. Speaking of body shapes, what about this bass from Hellrazor?

    RAWK!! Possibly the greatest iconic contribution to bass photography since Larry Hartke's sunglasses? :)

  11. It took me about 6 months as a complete rack-effects-virgin simply to come to terms with what its capable of. If you like wild and whacky, there's loads of potential for you to blow speakers :) I think what is most interesting about this unit is that it doesn't obstruct your creativity once you can visualise how things can potentially hook up inside it. Thats why the processing power and (according to Steve) lack of user patches is a bit of a bummer.

    The most complicated effect I've set up so far is an Akai Unibass type effect but with multitap delay and chorus added to the pitchshifted signal. I've resisted hooking up the effects to one another in weird ways because there are so many options that it would take too long to find something useable and the band I'm in at the moment doesn't have that kind of requirement anyway.

    I'd quite like to do an effect where the delayed signal is subjected to a very severe noise gate to make the echoes choppy, then I could add effects like phaser or an over feedbacked, unstable sounding chorus

  12.
I thought that thing was a Guitar_oriented machine

    I would like to know what Is so good for bass guitar in that one (comp section,effects or whatever)

    i 've always disliked DIgital_all_in_one solutions ,finding those tone-destroyng.
It was designed for guitar but its frequency response is as good as any studio effects unit so it suits bass too. You can set it up either to have dedicated patches per song, or set up a patch as a bank of effects which can be switched on and off at will using the footswitch. It also has a range of both modern and vintage effect simulations, speaker sim, noise gate etc. and you can order/patch the effects in any number of ways so that feedback from one will influence a setting on another. Its a bit of a swiss army knife with the footswitch. The only things I would say against it is the lack of processing power does impose limits.

    Alternatively, the TC Electronic G-Force is a close rival and if you want dedicated bass effects, Ped speaks highly of the Bass Pod XT.
