I played through the [url="http://www.avalondesign.com/images/vt737sp-01.jpg"]Avalon vt737sp tube mic preamp[/url] over the weekend and quite a nice piece of kit it was as well. But there again, for £1200 I'd expect nothing less.

I recorded through one over the weekend and the sound was pretty good. I particularly liked the combination of super quiet electronics, compressor and tube preamp. But at £1200 or so, they're going to be a little pricey for most.

Has anyone used one in their bass rig?

I'm not going to speculate on what the cause is, but there have been issues with their service in the past. To be fair they've been quick to sort things out then but I think they really need to get some new accountants in or develop a financial management system where one off payments are logged in the system as part of the cycle by the staff. At the moment it seems like the accountants get the details and then nothing happens. But even then I don't have too much of a problem, if they get the cheque to me via another means. What I REALLY object to is being asked to wait another 4 weeks.

If things got to that point, I would rather phone Barry Moorhouse up and have a frank discussion with him, asking some blunt questions about customer service. If I don't get the cheque by the end of this week I will probably do that and I'm sure he's going to be very apologetic and reasonable about it saying that what happened was unusual and its not good enough etc. However, it seems that history keeps repeating itself, which is a real shame.

Oh you're starting me off. They say their accountants are to blame but I don't see why any customer should have to bear the brunt of THEIR problems with their accountants.

Thats not how customer service works. If there's a problem, you find another solution promptly, not tell the customer that they're going to have to wait another 4 f*cking weeks for a cheque that should have been issued on time in the first place.

I'm having an issue with them still not having sent me a cheque for the sale of my fretted Modulus Quantum 5 SS TEN weeks after it sold. I'm not going to bitch about it right now, but if I don't get a cheque from Barry by the end of next week I'm not going to be happy.

They were 'borrowed' off US Ebay auctions. The asking prices were quite high and they didn't ship out of the 48 states so I just "appreciated" the pics.

Consistency by getting out there and playing with other musicians. It wasn't easy liking soul/funk in the early 90's. Everyone else was into The Stone Roses, Pixies, Charlatans etc. *shudder* Best thing to come out of the 90's indie bands were the Presidents of the USA and King Missile. Level 42 looked to be getting a decent second wind too, until Al Murphy passed away (could someone please explain to me the relationship between the southern US states, jive dancing and the music in their Heaven In My Hands vid?)

Bas actually joined BW late last year, he makes some really interesting stuff.

I've always had a mild hankering for Spalt basses. There's something elegantly functional about them. I particularly like the adjustable body, but you'd only have to do that once after you'd purchased it. There were some prototypes available on the Spalt site with [url="http://www.spaltinstruments.com/forsale.html"]movable pickups[/url] but I haven't seen any of them on the production models. Apparently they sound quite good as well.

For me, finding a keyboardist has been outright most difficult, they usually are so versatile and independent and can always keep themselves busy. There are loads of drummers out there but finding a good one who can hit things with feel has been even more difficult than finding a keyboardist.

They're an awesome band, so much energy and focus!

I'm looking to get one of these or a Yamaha DT-1 Express kit at some point, but not until I move into somewhere with MORE SPACE!

+1 and I paid £125 each from Soundcontrol (and this was after talking them down)!

We're having this conversation in my band right now as our photo shoot is coming up next Sunday. We're a bit resistant to the idea of a uniform as such, whats important to us is that we're distinctive and memorable - our individual personalities will count most for that. But the girls all have such divergent dress senses that its hard not to look a little chaotic.

For example, one of our singers likes her bangles and jangles, another is more urban chic and a third tends towards gamourous. Its hard to reconcile those tastes into a look as such. However, the Spice Girls did a pretty good job of it and I'm still trying to crack their formula. I think the lack of accessories helped a lot, they didn't generally wear patterns onstage and each of them chose a look that didn't overlap with any of the others.

Of course, in some ways the singers are the easy bit. The musicians are a little harder because we are in more of a supportive role and so our personalities aren't so crucial. I completely agree about black and the backdrop - we've had this experience ourselves mainly because the lighting was rubbish at most of the venues. If you look at some of the Jools Holland HipHop/RnB DVD acts most of them are looking good wearing black. I suspect this is because the lighting in the studio was a lot better than we've had on stage.

Wearing something lighter in tone definitely helps lift the band out of the background a little.

Does it wink an LED at you when it whistles? It might be trying to catch your attention.

Yes I have a Mesa and they are not made any more either and they don't come up for sale very often.

There was on one Ebay a couple of weeks ago where the auction was ended early, and that was the first I'd seen in well over a year. If you don't mind the mono route, there are also 70's Burman PowerPak PA power amps but they put out a maximum of 140W and they weigh more than the Strategy 400.

Beautiful job sir, if you have a middle initial going spare, you could get yourself on Bill's list of providers! In fact, if you ever feel like making cabs for others, let me know. I must try to hear these for real some time. I hope you bring them to the next bassbash!
