1. I think I agree with you guys, there is too many questions and issues about this bass.
2. I have built a few pedals now, but the problem I face most frequently is the varnishing. For previous builds I have used Plastikote Super Gloss clear, but it is far too soft for something that gets trod on, so what should I be using. Would an enamel based varnish be a better option? How about the Plastikote polyurethane varnish that is designed for use on wood, could I use that on metal without issues? I have a couple of builds nearing completion and I would like to make these ones perfect.
3. That would be the catch then, beautiful but unplayable. I'd still be inclined to take a risk on it.
4. The bass I yearn for the most is a 1983 (year of birth) Fender Precision Sienna Sunburst, this one for sale is a real beauty: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT However it is in the states and he won't ship to the abroad. The thing is that he is selling it at least 400 quid then they go for over here- is this thing legit? Anybody got a spare ticket to Vegas?
5. Has anybody used the micro-tilt adjustment thingymejig on the neck?
6. Bit of an unfashionable one (Jeremy Clarkson likes them)- Martin Turners solos during Handy by Wishbone Ash, very musical solos that build up into pretty solid grooves.
7. I have a 1989 MIJ Precision Lyte in sunburst, a very close relation to the one you are considering, it is an excellent instrument. If it weren't for what it says on the headstock, you wouldn't really think of it as a precision. Fender get a bit of stick from some custom bass junkies because they only have 2 designs, but the P Lyte is definitely in a class of its own. The slim neck is a joy to play and because it is so light, Fender put in some extra frets to maintain a 34" scale, so I think you get 24 frets- great for playing around and experimenting with. The jack is crap and it does indeed eat batteries as if they were monster munch.
8. I had a 3XFx Fatman that I sold to a basschatter and I think it has been sold on again since. It is a light sensor based occilating fuzz with an enormous volume boost. 'twas a crazy little mo-fo.
9. Unopened set of La Bella - Flatwound - Deep Talkin' Bass Strings (0760M), bought at the same time as a lighter gauge for comparison but in the end I decided to leave the lighter ones on the bass. £25 to your door
10.
That does look nice. But hey, this is a porn section, so can we have a full body shot? (...of the bass, that is )
Here you go: And that Rob Allen is a beauty. That little hole is giving me GAS.
11. I recently picked up my Waterstone Indra having not played it for a while, I had forgotten just how much boom it gives out.
12. I think that my attitude towards Squiers is pretty similar to my attitude towards sport, generally rooting for the underdog (until said underdog goes on to outperform your expensively assembled outfit). A great player grooving on a Squier is like when Seb Vettel won a GP in a Toro Rosso, or Hristo Stoichkov scoring for Bulgaria against Germany in the 1994 World Cup quarterfinal. Reason I like Classic Vibes in particular is that have never really owned ‘the best’ (ie premium brand) of something. The Fenders I have owned have been MIJ, which are great instruments and I would never knock them, but at the same time I am unlikely to experience gigging an American Vintage- even if I had the money to spare, I would be scared to take it out of its box. I get a perverse satisfaction from owning the very best model made by a second string manufacturer. I am very proud to own a Squier.
13.
Cheers Andy Me and Dave have been investigating it all day! We've sussed it though, it's JV + 5 digits proven by a photo, no idea why she only quoted 3 of the numbers to start with. I did see that one starting JV00xxx was quite early, as it happens, this one is JV4xxxx, placing it Mar-May '83. But yeah, we're going to see it (and hopefully purchase it) on Wednesday, I'll force him to post pics when and if he has it! Cheers all Si
How did you manage to date it so precisely? Is there a good source for dating info on the web?
Good idea but I'm from chilly, chilly, jocko land......
You can always go on a day trip to Carlisle or Newcastle, you don't have to live in England.
15. Does anyone know if there are any new Classic Vibe models for 2010? I see on the Squier website that there are some new guitars, but no basses.

Also worth considering is the Arts Council's Take it Away programme. If you find your ideal bass and it is a bit over your budget then it isn't the end of the world.
17. Underrated- Paul Jackson. The bass line in Chameleon is not only one of the greatest of all time, but also one of the most recognisable intros to an album
18. Irrespective as everything else, Wooten really does do great bass-face and when all is said and done, that is our main role in a band.
19. I have been considering a new pickup in my 51. I have a Wizard Thumper in my Squier P Bass, which I think is awesome, so I was thinking about asking Andy at Wizard Pickups to make up a single coil- although not as overwound as a thumper. I love the stock bridge however.
20.
Not sure TK is overated, And to be honest never seems to get a mention on Basschat. A fine Musician indeed. So out of curiosity who did make you fall asleep , DW or TK? Or the whole gig in general? Garry
It was probably the combination of a little bit of wine, the 2am second set and a large dollop of bang, bang, bosh, crash, cowbell. But I still don't like TK, too many notes. Just find a couple you like and play them well... like Guigsy.
21. Underrated- Guigsy... honestly. Overrated- Tom Kennedy, the only gig I have ever fallen asleep during. Although in Kennedy's defence it was mostly the 15 minute Dave Weckl drum solos that did for me.
22. I have just realised that I am one knob short for my latest effects pedal build and was wondering whether any English companies sold a Davies 1510 style cream knob. I could get one from Banzai, but €8 of shipping for an €0.80 knob seems excessive.
23. I know that not everyone will agree with me on this. For me, how a bass looks is of equal, perhaps greater importance than how it plays and how it sounds, probably because I am mostly rubbish at playing them. One thing I like to do is match the colour of the wrap to the colour of the bass. One colour I really don't like is the red of Fender and Rotosound steelies. I used to have a black Squier, which was great because any string complimented the bass. I particular I liked using the blue Rotosound Swing Bass nickels. On my Fender P Lyte I always use Fender Nickels to match the gold hardware. Fender stainless steel rounds = red Fender nickel = gold Fender stainless steel flats = green Rotosound swing bass nickel = blue Rotosound swing bass steel = red Rotosound jazz bass flats = red D'Addario shortscale nickels don't have a wrap What other options are there?
24. I still need to find a good home for the SX, tis a lovely bass to play, great for grooving. It also has the old-school SX headstock that is no longer in production. Go on, send me an offer.
25.
Hi can i have width and depth of neck at the heel, thanks
Width: 62mm Depth: 27mm
