1.
so, if you can contribute or just want to take a look at my work... here I am and here it is the table I'm trying to fill:
Excellent stuff.

I have a BB800 from c. 1979 and was very definitely made in Japan, it has Made In Japan stamped on the heel plate.

There is a site somewhere with serial numbers for the various models, though the BB800 dates from the period
where the serial numbering was a bit unreliable and uncoordinated.

  2.
Its the Jap ones im not sure about. I know very little about them.
The best Japanese Fenders are the not-for-export models. These have US pickups and better quality wood in the body (ash or alder instead of basswood). Guitar Emporium should have some of these but I don't think you will find them in the Bass Cellar/Centre/Gallery or anyone else in Denmark St.

  3.
Yeh good fishing out in the Orkneys :)
I know a few people in the Orkneys - next time something like this pops up please let me know before you get it pulled and I'll have someone go round and check it out.

  4.
Back in the days there was Marshall, Hiwatt, Orange and Sound sh*tty. Guess which was the least desirable?
Simms-Watts, then Selmer!

(don't forget Charlie Watkins or Jennings/Vox either)

There's a music shop near me with a Simms-Watts 120 guitar head for sale, £250 if anyone is interested.

Someone else got it backwards - the late Dave Reeves who was Hiwatt built stuff for Sound City for a while as a sideline.

And don't forget Gregg Burman - good as Hiwatt, and these two were streets ahead of everyone else.

  5. Whilst looking for something else, I stumbled across this fabulous beast.

    http://www.lonestarguitars.com/guitarron.html

    Anybody tried one?

  6. "Hey lads, can you play Over The Hills and Far Away?"

Snappy answers on a postcard ...

The brilliant Biggles Wartime Band had a good story on this theme. A drunk comes up to the band between numbers:

"Excuse me lads, can you play "Blossom Arsehole"?

    "Dunno, who's that by?"

"Elvis Presley", says the drunk, "it were one of his biggest hits".

Much scratching of heads amonst the band. "Can you sing the first couple of lines?"

"Well Blossom Arsehole whats wrong with me. I'm itchin like a man on a fuzzy tree ..."

  7. If I was looking for a HD recorder that will record 8 simultaneous tracks and do all the usual stuff, it seems to me that it'll be hard to beat the Zoom HD 16. Is anybody using one, if so what do you think of it?

If you bought something else instead, what did you get and why?

  8.
'
Finally a possible bargain a 1983 RSB Special-I in my favourite colour, currently awaiting an opening bid above £25. I've already got one & they're little crackers - perfect beaters & a very slick neck.

    Pete.
Someone's gone for it. I have one identical to this, except that mine's a lined fretless (and in much better condition). No idea whether mine was a factory fretless or was done after, but I'd have to agree with what Bloodaxe said about the neck. This is a quality piece of kit for £25 quid in my slightly biased opinion!

Edit: Make that £28 quid. Someone got a real bargain IMHO.

  9.
A good and cheap option is to just buy new IEC leads (where apropriate) as you can buy them bulk fairly cheaply. Keep the receipt as I belive as long as it less than 12 months old it is expempt, I could be wrong but it makes sense!
Any piece of equipment doesn't need to be PAT tested until it is more than 12 months old. Instead of PAT stickers, you affix a 'this is new equipment' sticker with the date.

Once it's necessary to PAT test something, if the IEC mains lead is tested at the same time as the piece of equipment it plugs into, the lead is given an ID and is certified for 5 years (the same as the piece of equipment that it relates to). An IEC lead by itself, not associated with a piece of equipment, is only in-test for a period of 12 months until it is done again.

If you have something like a wall wart or a laptop-type DC power supply, it can't be PAT tested. The best the sparkies can do is append a visual inspection sticker.

  10.
Have you tried the OLP musicman copies? I don't know what difference there is in string spacing between them and musicmans (musicmen?) but mine's really comfortable and the string spacing is fine in my opinion.
Mine too, but then I have small hands!. The string spacing on my MM3 is 17mm at the bridge.

  11.
I'm sceptical about the shielding thing, but the troubleshoot is a two-way process so I'm going to do as they ask to take it out of the equation. If it works.. great.
I think you're right to be sceptical. At least it demonstrates to Genz that you're doing everything that you can do.

Do you know of anyone near you who has a Line 6 Variax bass? Since that doesn't have any conventional pickups, it shouldn't have any shielding problems. If you plug one of those in and it hums, I think it would be a good pointer to the amp being faulty.

I recently managed to solve a similar problem with inductive loops.

  12. Thanks for all the replies and sorry that this took me a while - couldn't find the vernier :-(

The neck is 2.54 inches at its widest part. The pocket is 2.52 inches at its widest part.

The rest of the routing on this body is nothing special and will need some more work, though
it'll be covered up by scratchplate and fitting a different bridge P/U. Given that, and that the
body is nothing special, I'm inclined to follow Paul_C's suggestion. At least that way if I cock
it up, I've still got a pristine neck and all I need to do is find another body.

  13. Another endorsement for John at Far East Guitars. I got my CIJ Precision from him. Nice bloke to deal with. I notice though that he's not bringing in a lot of stock at the moment.

Another possibility is to import yourself from Ishibashi. Go to http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/u_box for their used stock. I haven't dealt with them, but others on the forum have found them to be helpful and efficient.

  14. A week further on - we've still had no contact.

I contacted 10 of the buyers of the various items. 8 replied - none had had any contact from the seller, and at least 4 had also paid over money
for no goods. The Ebay account is delisted, user's feedback -4 none of which is particularly complimentary, some of which wouldn't get past the Mylene Klass filter. I expect he'll pop up again like a whack-a-mole somewhere else.

Several of the buyers have contacted the police, not that they will do anything. We've contacted the bank but I'm not very optimistic there either.
I was away when Mrs PY made the payment otherwise I might have smelt a rat, but it still goes to show that even experienced ebayers can get caught occasionally.

    Be careful out there.

  15.
Those who have been affected, have you been clicking links on google just before it changed?
If you mean the links on the google ads, then no - it happened to me back in July before
    the google ads appeared.

If you mean just generally doing google searches whilst still browsing basschat, then I
can't recall but it's highly likely I did!

  16. Dudes,

Quick heads-up . My son bid on a pedal sold by ladeprub . We sent payment through bank transfer to the account of the ebayer (PM me for the name and address that was given) who gave an address in Renfrewshire on August 9th.

If anyone has any ideas how I can confirm that the address that was given to me is actually realated to this virus I will be grateful!

Since then, nothing. Zip.Nada. No response. No pedal. Rip off city.

If anyone in the Lochwinnoch area is reading this and owns a baseball bat, let me know.

Everyone else, keep well clear of this piece of sh1te, whatever name on ebay he's now using to scam people it may well point back to the same name and address.

  17. Amongst the pile of bits that I'm slowly assembling into a bass, I have a Mighty Mite Jazz neck, unmolested, and a routed body acquired from someone on Bassworld ages ago. The neck is slightly too big for the pocket, and needs to be made to fit.

What is the best way to proceed, sand the neck heel until it fits the body, or open out the pocket until it fits the neck? The routing on the body is not great so I'm inclined to suspect this is the problem.

  18.
In the meantime I'm tempted to download every diagram I can lay my hands on and burn it all to disc while I have the chance!
That's why I suggested wget - it's a handy little program for copying stuff from A to B. Amongst other things, it can be used to
take a complete copy of all or part of a web site. There are probably other Windows programs with point-and-click type
windows interfaces , maybe someone else can recommend a web-site cloning program that is a bit easier to use.

wget is a gnarly command-line thing but I know that it works!

  19. If you go to the wayback machine http://www.archive.org/ there are plenty of hits. If you go to the low bandwidth version the articles are still there - not sure what point the switch-off occurred but it was before May 9th this year and after Feb 20th. Point wget at the URL and get your own copy.

  20.
Five switches for just over four quid shipped, difficult to argue with that.
That's very cheap. On reflection I'll see if I can find a black one, to match
    the rest of the hardware.
As for circuit diagrams, I used a combination of these two diagrams:
Smart. Thanks very much for this info.
