There's a company called 'Gigskinz' who make a range of mixer bags. I thought I'd succeeded in ordering one for my iAmp 350,
which is a similar size, but the company haven't delivered the goods in 2 weeks and don't answer my phone calls or emails,
so PM and I'll tell you who not to buy one from!

Wow, more weird windows functionality that I never even knew existed! That's actually quite useful.

I'm using Firefox on XP and all of a sudden all the fonts on this site are tiny. I haven't changed any browser settings and the site currently has permission to over-ride my defaults.

Has anything changed? Anyone else seeing this or is it just me?

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the Armstrongs. I've an RSB Special - 1 fretless which sounds a bit lifeless and I was wondering about changing the pickup, or maybe asking Wizard to rewind it.

Also, how did you make such a neat template? Draw round the pickup, but then what - how do you allow for the collar thickness?

They're not sealed, or ported. There's a hole in the back that you use as a carrying handle.

I've got one of these rigs too, and I don't think they're suitable cabinets for putting 250w drivers into, without going anywhere near WinISD.You'd be better off to get bassthing68 to build a couple of Omni 10.5s, or look at the smaller Epiphani/EBS/EA/GK/Insert your favourite boutique cab of choice here.

Thanks Dave, that makes sense. They have different kits depending on whether it's cathode bias or fixed bias, and there's another add-on for amps with a separate supply for the screen. I dont have schematics for the Burman but I guess it takes the screen voltage off the plate.

It's probably time for me to go and find someone locally who can poke about in the amp innards and confirm this!

In no particular order, it can be carried like a rucksack where a hard case can't, it will fit in the boot of the car when a hard case won't unless I put the back seats down, and if it goes inside it won't destroy the interior.

Might fit Markbass, but it's just too small to squeeze an iAmp 350 into.

I have one of these cases. I took off the hinges, replaced them with some lift-off ones and turned it upside-down. My pedal board (a grand name for some lengths of 1x2 chopped up and screwed together) lives in it.

Despite the tough looks, the construction is quite flimsy. Under that thin sheet of tinfoil is a thin piece of cardboard and not much else. I had to put some aluminium packers under the new hinges to stop them pulling through. OK for bits, pieces cables, etc but I don't think I'd trust an expensive amp to it.

I wondered about the Deep Impact. I also wondered about the RTK factor (Roadies Twiddling Knobs) !

So what I should probably have asked is, how can I get something that would sound a little bit like this without spending an arm and a leg?

Sound Control have sold their stock. The cheapest price I can find for a new one is Rockin Rooster at £157, which is what they originally retailed for.

Last one I saw on the bay went for £100. You never know - it just depends on whether somebody wants one or not.

Vox. I had one of these (a Vox Wyman) and it was pretty horrible, short scale and sounded dreadful. Hofner Violin bass has a pretty slender neck too, and there are loads of reasonable copies of this around - I saw a very nicely turned out Jay Turser in a local music shop for less than 200 quid.

I have a Precision with a Jazz neck on it, which is one option - you can probably find a Jazz neck and it fitted to your existing bass if you're happy with the sound.
Some of the Japanese Arias from the early 1980s had very slim necks too. My RSB special is like this, though it's not quite as slim as a jazz.

Technique helps. I've got small hands too, and I find it's much easier to put my thumb on the back of the neck than to try and rest the neck in the space between thumb and first finger.

Yes, get a copy of 'Askin The Way' from the cultural foundation web site. It was recorded in 2004 just before Ron Aspery died and contains some new material as well as some of the old standards.

Despite the fact that it says 'stocked by the Bass Centre' on the site, it isn't. In fact the last time I went in there, the staff hadn't heard of Back Door or Colin Hodgkinson.

There's a distro called <a href="http://ubuntustudio.org/">ubuntustudio</a> which includes a package called Ardour, which is supposedly pro-tools like. If you get around to trying it, or to installing Ardour, please post your experiences here since it's bound to be valuable.

For an alternative perspective, I have a server here running OpenSolaris, booting off a mirrored zfs file system. Took about 10 minutes to set up the mirroring and it seems to be rock solid. Not tried recording anything on it though.

Personally for quality construction I think you have to go a long way to beat the older Sun Microsystems kit. It's almost Burman-like!

I do have one mac, an old MacPlus which has been converted into a fish tank. I'll try and find some pictures. We're about to acquire a macbook when leopard is released - I think macs really do have advantages for people who aren't into computers and just want to get stuff done.
