1.
Why don't we put this to the vote?
Simple majority? The forum has approx 1900 members, so that's roughly 950 votes in favour required. That's not gonna work.

I think we went down the path of 'how many votes is enough' on Bassworld, without coming up with a useful answer.

  2.
'IF' one of my (our) fellow BCers was selling the item then surely the more coverage and higher bids the better... So that's not particularly well thought through!
The point , not very well made, was that some BC might be very happy to have an item he was selling highlighted in this forum, and your
    proposal would prevent it.
You may not agree with my point of view as is your prerogative. Highlight all the links you like; all I'm trying to point out is, it may well hack you off if you happen to come across an item of particular interest to you, that you're hoping to bag at a bargain price, when a 'fellow BCer' points it out to all and sundry thereby ruining any chance of you getting a bargain!
File under 'sh*t happens'. I suspect that in reality there are very few 'bargains' that go un-noticed .
I'm simply playing Devil's Advocate as nothing so far highlighted on this section of the forum has ever pertained to anything that I am watching but I am aware of others that have been less fortunate... let's hope it never happens to you.
I don't think I have either. I also don't think I've posted anything in here which has prevented someone getting a bargain.

If the mods start to block that kind of posts, they're only going to crop up elsewhere on the forum, where people who are not registered will be able to find them with search engines.

  3.
As it has been pointed out most regular eBayers hang fire till the end but my point still stands... are you doing any fellow BCers any good by highlighting an auction style listing?
Maybe one of your 'fellow BCers' , whatever that means, is selling the item?

I don't agree with your point of view, and reserve the right to highlight what I think are interesting listings.

  4.
Albino Cubana are an nine piece Latin/World Music band with Vocals (x2), guitar/tres, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, trumpet and trombone - very dance orientated but funky as f*** and the horns are a delight. I DARE YOU TO SIT STILL!!!
Sounds good. I'll be there if I can get a pass-out. Maybe I'm not the only person in Suffolk with a columbian Tiple after all!

  5.
Anyone know if a Status neck will fit on the 5 string?

    ta
I think it will, because there used to be someone on Bassworld who had one with a Status graphite neck. Can't remember who it was though.

There's also a rewiring mod to get rid of the 2 volume controls - do a search in the 'Repairs and Technical' forum.
I never got around to modding mine yet. There's also a Nordstrand pickup available for these basses.

  6.
Has anybody ever tried using a PA for bass with any success, & does anybody know anything about FAL?
Some people have had varying degrees of success with Simms-Watts PA amps.

FAL were made in Cornwall, 70's / 80's I think. I have an old FAL 50W 4-channel transistor PA amp somewhere. Never tried putting bass through it. It's not great, tbh.

  7.
What's that book, Pete?
Ultimate Slap Bass, by Stuart Clayton, www.basslinepublishing.com .

Stu posts on this forum occasionally. It's an excellent book IMHO, which starts from absolute basics and goes right through to stuff in the advanced section that I can't get close to, like double thumbing. Includes 2 CDs and interviews with some of the usual suspects.

Stu, if you're reading this used fivers will do nicely ;-)

  8.
I have listened to Jeff Berlin's 'metronome rant' for over a decade. I kind of know what he means about time but I think he is missing a trick. I think the device has merit in that it teaches you, as a developing player, to LISTEN to another sound source whilst you are determining the validity of your own 'time'. In short, if you are playing straight quarter notes solo, I have no doubt that they will be in time (as per Jeff's 'numpty from the audience' trick) but, unless you have something to refer to, you will not be able to determine whether or not your RELATIVE time is good (are you racing, dragging etc).
+1 for that.

Another good trick is to play along to a track and then have someone drop the sound source out for 8, 12, 16 or whatever
bars and see how close you are to the original beat when it comes back in.

I think metronomes can be useful when you're starting out, and I find them handy things to have around when I sit down with a score and it says 'crotchet = 152' to figure out how fast it has to go.

I'm not impressed with Jeff's attitude either - I saw him at the London Guitar Show a couple of years ago and we got 2 minutes of bass-playing (supposedly demoing Markbass) plus a 10-minute rant about how you don't need to spend loads of money on lessons about how to play slap bass, just buy a book.

Just for the record, I have Stu Clayton's excellent book but I'm still struggling with the 'why' question rather than the 'how' question ;-)

  9.
fit 1/4" router bit with bottom-mounted roller bearing, cut round & round in circles until the bearing stops up against the pickup rout,
Ah. Sound of penny dropping, very loudly.
PS. It's now gone black - hopefully have some piccies next weekend.
Looking forward to seeing it finished.

  10.
Thanks Pete, and you also. Your rendition of the theme from Captain Pugwash was one of the musical highlights of the year without doubt. After you left, Sarah said "you should have asked him to play it on the fretless", and on reflection, that would have been interesting :)
Piece of cake, as long as you dont want the chord accompaniment as well!
Hope the Bass Collection is working out for you. You made it sound a whole lot better than I ever did
    Chris
Aw shucks, that's very kind. The more I play it, the more I love it. I took it to rehearsal last night and the rest of the band were happy with the sound it makes. One or two intonation problems to sort on some of the more bizarre keys (Stay, in Db), but that's it. When I picked up my Precision it felt huge and unwieldy in comparison.

There is one other problem: I like it so much, I need to find a fretted one so that I've got a pair.

Hurry up basschatters and make Chris a really good offer on the ash bodied P, before he changes his mind! It's lovely.

  11.
oopss sorry...http://www.flightcasepro.co.uk/Gig-Skinz/Gig-Skinz.php
I also managed to order one from Chemical Records in Bristol yesterday at 3.00pm, and
it was delivered this morning before 11.00 ! Excellent service if you ask me.

  12.
3. I know it's a pain but I will only book one rehearsal room slot down here. If you want to come down and try either the precisions or the Modulus loud, it would have to be that day (clearly I can't keep forking out £30 everytime someone wants to try a bass out, sorry). Alternatively, you can play at low level through my rig at home (which I think was OK for Pete Y. when he came down last weekend).
Yes, that worked fine for me. It was a great pleasure to meet you Chris.

  13.
Quote Dood "What would have happened if the original stand up basses had six strings to start with???"

    They did. And frets too...
Indeed. Any of you guys ever seen a Theorbo?

14 or more strings. Between 6 and 8 fretted, typical scale length 30 - 32 inches. The remainder 52 inch unfretted.
Bass and Tenor register. Fabulous things.

  14.
You know, I swear that I can hear a bass during the organ solo in this video of Schofield:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfi9fKpm3yU
Either that or the organist is truly one talented SOB.
I'd go with 'talented SOB'. You can see his left hand technique working at 3.15 - 3.45 .

Just found out they're playing near me next March. Woo! Yay!

  15.
Looking to put some wheels on my 1x15, anything I should know before I start merrily drilling into it?

    Cheers, :)
Get 4 castors and stick them on a bit of board instead. You don't mark the 1x15 and you can use the board when you get a 4x10 to go with it. And the castors don't rattle.

  16.
Yes, isn't it the PB70US-88 model or something with the maple neck?

edit: no... it's this one SEXAY http://item.rakuten.co.jp/shimokura-gakki/pb70_93/
I've got one just like that. The neck is jazz width.

Anyway, back on topic. Lovely lovely bass, I cant believe you could bear to part with it. Must be serious GAS. do tell.

  17.
Hey GP, if you happen to be popping into Sound Control on a weekday lunchtime or after work, drop me a PM. I work just down the road in High Holborn and its not too much hassle to help out.
What an offer. I'd take him up on that, if I were you.

  18.
So who is the best bass dealer in London, for a novice just starting out.
Well, based on a trip down Denmark St last Saturday I can't honestly recommend any of the shops there except Hanks, and they don't sell basses. Though we didn't manage to get to Wunjos, so I can't comment on them. Macaris, a bit further down Charing Cross Rd is still a proper music shop but I don't know what stock they carry.

God knows what happened to the Bass Cellar since Simone left, but they have a distinctly odd idea of customer service. There was a notice on the wall which said something like 'Want a bass, but got no money? Well don't waste our time!' I think that's appalling.

The chances are that you will find a better deal in the second hand pages on this forum. It might still be worth going down to a couple of dealers to see what's available, just leave your cheque book at home. The place with the biggest stock of basses in your range is probably the Bass Centre in Brune St, round the back of Liverpool St Station. Customer service is extremely variable but can be very good. The Bass Gallery is the dealer of choice for many basschatters, but they don't carry a lot of low-end stock.
