1. I seem to have accumulated more microphones than I have tracks, and more than I can fit in my flat. So here are some old favourites at good prices. I'm in central London, if you want to pick up.

SE 2200A Large Diaphragm Condenser SOLD

Beyerdynamic Opus 65 Dynamic microphone. A joy on kick drum or bass amp, especially if, like me, you play very loud. Hypercardioid. Details here: http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/beyerdynamic/Opus-65 £90 picked up, £95 shipped Reduced to £75/£80 Reduced again to £70/£75

Audio Technica ATM450 side-address small diaphragm condenser. Brilliant for sliding between drums or fitting into small spaces. With original clip and windshield, and in original box Details here: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/2001...ica-atm450.html £90 picked up, £95 shipped Reduced to £75/£80 Reduced again to £70/£75

    Added 8/08/10

Reslo Ribbon mic. 30/50 ohms version. Comes with the original lead and transformer. Working just now when I miced a guitar cab with it (quietly). SOLD

Superlux Active Ribbon mic R102. Comes with the original case and clip. This is an easy-to-use modern ribbon with a built-in preamp circuit, that gets a good sound straight away. See the spec here: http://www.dv247.com/microphones/superlux-...crophone--53794 £75 picked up, £80 shipped

  2. Thanks for the thoughts guys - I know there's still quite a bit to learn. Mastering is definitely something I need to look into. And be brave enough to trust to someone else! We were trying to get a sound that still had rough edges - we didn't want our three-piece to sound like anything bigger.

Tom (the drummer) will love the fact that he was mistaken for a machine. That's very much the sound he goes for.

I'm off to teach myself how to duck the bass to capture kick transients in Logic - that's what I like about recording, always something new to learn.

  3. I got really tired of my bass being mixed out of recordings. Or being mixed to sound awful.

So I have started learning to engineer my own recordings. It's early days (I'm still pretty ropey), but at least you can hear the bass, and everything sounds like it does in rehearsal! And I don't have to explain my slightly weird bassplaying style to anyone.

3-piece art rock for fans of Shellac, Young Widows and My Disco:

(Bass recorded on an Electrovoice RE-20 and a Sony c55p if anyone cares)

  4. I've discovered that I'm stronger than I look, and that it's possible to lug a Traynor 1x12 combo to gigs on the bus. So time for this to go.

This is the guitar version of the super-popular Microbass series of amps. It's a stereo 100W combo (50W per side) the size of a toaster, ideal for quieter guitar gigs and popular with jazzers. It houses 2 6" speakers. The speakers in these amps tended to rot (they used cheap foam for part of the cone), so in this amp they've been replaced by modern Eminence speakers. The new internal speakers are 8ohm per channel (as opposed to the original 16) so that the amp can realise its full 100W from the internal speakers. This means that the internal speakers have to be turned off (switch on the back) if you use an external cab (which must be 8 or 16ohm per channel).

Working great, and looks good when you consider this amp must be about 20 years old. Part of the reason it still looks so good is that it's all made of aluminium. The only real cosmetic problems are a couple of scratches and the knobs - so many of them were broken when I bought this amp 2 years ago, that I just replaced the lot to get a nice clean look. I've used this for practices and gigs more than happily.

This amp has a clean channel and a dirty channel, with gain set by little trimmer inside, and volume set on the front. It also has chorus, compressor and a nice analogue echo circuit built in.

This amp doesn't come with a footswitch. To operate the effects and switch channels remotely you'll need to buy an RF-II, or something equivalent. I can supply full service manuals for the amp so that someone who's clever with a soldering iron can make you one.

  5.
i think this might be the no. 1 in the top ten of basschat topics that get people frothing at the mouth....
I think it just exposes the fact that we've got bass players here from a bunch of different backgrounds and scenes. And places. The kind of people who never lend, and there are plenty of them, just aren't the kind of people I come across at the little DIY gigs I play. But I also don't meet teenagers who don't know how to use amps.

I also guess a lot of people here don't often gig with the responsible noisy types who sort out a kitshare between all of them beforehand, who are the people I gig with most of the time.

I think if the answer is that you're in a scene where lending is abused, don't lend. But if you're in a scene where lending is expected and respected, do it.

Someone blew up my cab once (well, they broke the voice coil on the driver). I just assumed that there was something wrong with that cab, and that I would probably have blown it myself next gig. No-one's noisier than me!

  6. Here's a load of pedals that I don't use enough to justify having them in my living room (especially when I have my eye on some recording gear).

First of all, they're sitting on a PedalTrain Junior, which comes with a softcase. Yours for SOLD. It's the older softcase, without the external pocket.

All pedal prices are POSTED in the UK.

    Top Row:

DOD Psycho Acoustic Processor - Basically an exciter that helps to put the definition back into your sound - £30

DOD Hard Rock Distortion - Distortion and a short analogue delay in one box - £25

    Cool Cat Tremolo - SOLD

Aphex Punch Factory Compressor - £40

    Second Row:

ART Tube MP Studio V3. Missing a knob. A valve preamp that works well on bass, vocals and other things. Only selling because I've bought the stereo rackmount version. Comes with the original power supply - ON HOLD

    Bugbrand Bugcrusher Micro SOLD

    BOSS LS-2 Line Selector- SOLD

    Digitech Digiverb Reverb - SOLD

    Electro-Harmonix POG2. SOLD

Peavey BAC-2 BiAmp Chorus. A really nice chorus, but even more importantly a cheap, easy to use crossover. Turn the chorus off and this box will act as a 400Hz crossover to split your highs from your lows. Great for bi-amping or preserving low end. Battery cover is taped on, as the clip is damaged - SOLD

More details or pics available on anything you like. Meet me in London to pick things up and you save postage. I'll also reduce postage if you buy multiple things.
