1.
When you say 'shouty' do you mean loud rock shouty or Tom Waits style gravelly Steve?

Also, any ribbon mics for sale?

PS used the SM7b for DB today and got some nice tones
Glad you and the 7b are getting on. I should imagine it's fantastic on DB in a nice room.

I've used the PL20 on the vocals for http://www.myspace.com/somoney and for http://www.myspace.com/strawberryandcreammusic so I think it'll handle anything. Tom Waits style might need a good pre, as I'm assuming they're quiet.

Ribbons - I have one of these that can leave the house for £75 shipped. In box with mount. The ribbon has been re-tensioned, as it was showing the 'sag' typical of poor QC in chinese ribbon mic factories.

  2. Up for sale here is my Electro Voice PL20 mic. It's identical to an RE20 in every respect apart from the colour of the paint. The PL20 was the RE20 re-badged to take part in a different marketing plan.

Last year it went to Electro Voice and had a new capsule installed and a complete re-foam. Still has their repair label attached. It sounds new, having only been used for three sessions since then. The finish, however, is more than 20 years old, hence it has a few marks. Not many though - these are built like tanks.

One of the best mics out there for bass cabs, kick drum, voices (especially strong female voices or shouty blokes), and spoken word (it was built as a radio broadcaster's mic). I love it, and I'm only selling because I have two, but no two-bass band anymore.

£250 including special delivery to the UK.

  3. Rock gigs are WAY better to watch with earplugs. I reckon that most soundmen can't hear above 4 kHz so they crank this end of the mix. Earplugs take off the massive excess of cymbals in most FOH mixes and mean that you can actually hear the music.

  4.
i've heard some bands that do the multi-bass thing quite well (rothko for example), but as for the all-star 'bass covention'-style jams i've seen posted here...

they just don't do it for me.
I love loads of two and three bass bands. I've even been in some.

But I agree with Mr. Pook here. Mind you, convention-style jams always sound awful to me, regardless of instrumentation.

  5. I've got a ZOOM H4 and the Edirol R-09HR. The Zoom's best feature is the two phantom-powered XLR sockets so that you can plug some really nice mics into it and record in setups other than X-Y. I would say that the Edirol has slightly better usability, size and battery life though.
