If you want early queen sound, listen to some of the isolated bass tracks from queen on youtube.

John's sound is nothing like youd think. Its raw, very rough sounding and quite growly. Sits in the mix as something completely different.

I think that’s very common amongst decent rock players as it acts like an adhesive between the guitar and bass sound, making one magical super tone.

But the best of the lot IMO

    Digitech Bass Synth Wah.

I think the bass synth wah is a good option. Currently using it as just an octave pedal but it does synth and envelope filter too pretty well. About £70 s/h. Bargain considering the amount of options it provides. There is also a built in cab sim if you hold the pedal down before you power up too.

  3. I have had a string break, amps crap out, dodgy leads. At a recent gig at the start of the second set just as I pushed my lead into the input socket of the bass, the nut and washer fell off onto the floors and the socket fell inside the bass!

I turned to tell the guitarist what happened. He looked shocked and said “what are you going to do now!” I said “nothing” just smiled, leant across and grabbed my spare bass!
    Pays to be prepared.

  4. There are some good Robert Kelley videos online explaining compression in great detail.
I never used one until recently. Just makes it sound so much better. Wouldn’t be without it now.
if you’ve got the money get the Cali 76, if you don’t grab a s/h spectracomp for about £50. I managed to pick up a lovely Seymour Duncan studio compressor really cheaply. They are great too.
    Good luck.

Can’t find the YouTube link, but a while ago a guy was on there showing how you can restore

a bit of the brightness of new strings by slackening them a off a little one by one

and ‘snapping’ them sharply, making them whack the frets.

This removes a lot of the gunk in the windings ( of roundwounds) and temporarily gives

them a bit more life. I tried it and you could hear a bit of difference, although suspect

it may give better results on really filthy strings?

Worth a go and costs nowt....😀

I believe it was Marlowe DK doing it
