Don't be put off by the naysayers over the looks - they are awesome AWESOME basses. FACT. Mine won't be leaving the harem in a hurry!
-
You mean the Robert Palmer tune? I'll maybe get a listen tonight. Can't promise I'll be any help but a second pair of ears couldn't hurt - where are you stuck?
prices can appear attractive but you'll have to factor-in shipping, VAT, import duty etc.
Or a cheap flight and a quick sprint through the 'nothing to declare' aisle! -
Definately try new, but buy second hand.
One of the nicest basses I've played recently was the Squier Classic Vibe Jazz (while on honeymoon in New York just before Xmas). I was blown away. So much so that it has stuck in my head more than the $3000 Sadowsky's I played on the same trip. They're outstanding value and are starting to appear in the for sale forum here (the Sadowsky's were awesome too, but didn't quite have the same value to awesomeness ratio!).
Also consider the Ibanez ATK - this may not suit everyone as it's physically quite a big bass for a 4 string, but sounds AWESOME. In my book it stamps all over the Ernie Ball/Musicman Stingray that it's modelled on (and which costs more than 3 times as much). There's one in the for sale section at the minute for £250. Bargain! -
Lots of variables and they can make a huge difference to the price (both new & used). Nitro finish and upgraded fingerboards are both expensive & very desirable options.
Rough idea of prices with and without all the trimmings? -
Tempted but brassic!
-
How much (ballpark) are you talking about for an LG5 second hand? (braces for impact and subsequent sharp intake of breath!)
-
Animated or static. . ?
I was wondering the same! -
That's lovely Steve. I daren't play an LG5... I fear for what might happen!
-
Curious about this - off to check out dimensions...

It's all on the one baby!
-
Come on Steve - spill!

Status have been known to produce tight spaced fives in the past. 15mm spacing I believe. Don't know if they still do.
As well as the Ibanez SR series the Yamaha John Myung 6 signature was tight spaced too. -
Anyone looking at these needs to be careful (not in this case obviously since Bernie has OKed this one). I had a similar one for a while and it wasn't great - sloppy routing and finishing - things that wouldn't get past any decent QC. It would seem that some time after Bernie and Lowden 'parted ways' a job lot of remainder parts were sold uncompleted as kits and assembled outside the Goodfellow process.
Be careful out there. -
Try and play everything you can before you make your own decision. Again, I think the atk is as good as most of the single H 'rays I've played/owned. Don't disregard G&L basses either.

If only you were closer - could be seriously tempted by this...
Probably the start of another thread/argument. But... why-oh-why... when discussing a bass, the first thing anybody says is always "it's no good for slapping" or "it's great for slapping". Unless I've been living under a rock for the last 30 years, slap bass is so spectacularly niche that for 99.99% of player it doesn't matter a stuff if a bass is good for slap or not. Still, each to their own
More flames.... here they come
I agree wholeheartedly - but if that's somebody's only reason to disregard a bass like the Bongo HH then I'll argue with it cos it's tosh!
I agree with most of what you said about basic sound - my Lakland JO is my go-to bass in a no soundcheck situation because it just works. Having tried a 'ray in the same situation I don't think it works as well (for me) - it had a habbit of disappearing in the mix. I haven't had the same problem with my Bongo though -
I (personally) dislike where they've got the neck humbucker, its a tad too far forward for my liking and gets in the way of slap/pop which is one of the Stingray's best features.
You get used to slapping on the HH VERY quickly. There's plenty of room there. -
In my opinion you already own a better bass in your ATK than the standard 'ray/sterling (speaking from personal experience - I'll probably put noses out of joint with that one, but YMMV). If trimming down to 1 bass it has to be flexible so if you're set on MM then go with an HH of some description. If you decide you can get on with the visuals I'll +1 Duarte and say you could do a lot worse than the Bongo HH. It's a fantastic instrument and can do Stingray all day long if you want, but has so much more available. Never tried any $$ so can't really comment, but I do know I gave up on Warwick production after '98. Haven't played a really good one newer than that, but again YMMV.
Yep, thats why he f***s up orion every time I've seen him try to play it. Seen him six times in total with different bands and each time its the same. Sloppy. Sure he has aggressive attack and speed but that doesn't make him a good bassist IMHO.I judge him on is what I have seen and it aint good. Simple as.
Yeah, but you also think Satch is cool, which makes your views questionable! Only yanking your chain!
I mourned the day I heard RJ joined Metallica... beneath the man no matter what way you look at it. That particular machine's been broken (probably beyond repair) since the black album. -
It's humbucking. Has been since '57...
Satch is cool enough to get away with a chrome guitar. This guy is not!!!
There are too many things wrong with that post... you're just WRONG... about everything...
RJ is the coolest 45 year old on the planet! And there's f.all wrong with his technique. Hasn't stopped him being one of the finest bass players out there (although it's a great shame he's lumbered with those other 3 idiots!) -
The Coldamp is indeed what I used, and the amp module is very small, but the PSU that goes with it is twice the size of the amp. I reckon the Icepower modules might be the way to go, but I don't think they sell to the general public as yet.

According to their website, BO won't sell the ICEpower units to the public. Pitty, although looking at the combined size of the coldamp amp and PSU modules they're not much bigger than the ICEpower module.
This thread (and one over on TB) has me thinking about putting my own 1U amp together with a butchered sansamp VT bass as the preamp and the coldamp pack for the business end. Might just build the mini power amp (as you did Alien) to keep the preamp options open though! -
Try http://www.hypex.nl/ and ...well I was going to say ColdAmp - but their website is down. But this page seems to load https://www.coldamp.com/store/
ColdAmp is what Alien used for his little 400watt power amp isn't it? Cool! Might have to get me some of that!
Lucky you, most of us have to look the part - to within certain tolerances - too.
I think looks are an important aspect of something you intend to wear while a room full of people stare at you.
You've some neck going on about how the bongo's look when you're wearing that shirt in your avatar...
