1. I generally let 'em boil for 5 minutes or so. You can usually see the scum building up on top of the water as it goes! YUK! Greg
2. I realise people will probably howl in disapproval, but I have always boiled my strings in water to clean them. Doesn't last forever, but I bet this BassBrites stuff doesn't either! Boiling works a treat for me. ..... and its very cheap! Greg
3. . The BBE BMax has incredible tone, especially when you hit that "Sonic Maximizer" switch! ..... and the non-valve version is very cheap!
4. . I've seen these things for sale here in Australia. They are (surprise, surprise) Chinese made. Apparently you can even have "Rickenbacker" put on the headstock if you request it! Personally, I'd save up for the real deal rather than waste my money on a crap copy that I know is going to disappoint me. Still, there are people out there who'll buy them I guess. Horses for courses. Greg
5. . I built a rehearsal studio in the garage of the last house I owned. We'd leave all of our gear in there and yes, I used to stack the guitarist's combo on top of my bass cabinet. It wasn't that we were pressed for space, it was just that doing it made the space seem just that little bit bigger/nicer. Sorry, totally off topic....... I miss having that room. It was superbly insulated and so "dead", beautiful for recording. I was working in the construction industry and I sourced pretty much all of the materials from various site's leftovers and stuff over time. I think all I actually paid for was the door jamb and hinges. It was even air conditioned! (Got that for free too!) Greg
6. .
....I'm too impatient to wait for delivery....
You suffer from that too? I'm bloody hopeless in that regard! Greg
7. I'd be happy to lend you mine except I'm in Orstralia! Man, just buy one. You never know when you are going to need it again. I have always bought tools rather than borrow them, that way I have slowly built up a very extensive workshop full of tools and equipment over the past 30 odd years. It pays off in the long run. Greg
8. . After running rounds for more than 20 years exclusively on my 4001 , I've recently gone with half-rounds. I couldn't bring myself to go full flat because I hate the feel of them under my fingers! Initially I didn't really like the tone (I guess because I was so used to the rounds) but I have grown to love it and won't go back to rounds again. Greg
9. . Depending on what you are after I've found "Lean-Business" over there in the UK brilliant. They had the cheapest prices on the speakers I have bought and they process the order almost instantly. I've had gear arrive here (in Australia!) less than a week after I've paid for it! "Lean-Business" Greg
10. . 27-28 years ago I was watching a punk band play in a local club. All of a sudden the bass player's amp died and I was absolutely gob-smacked at the way it affected the sound. the entire band lost all "guts" and sounded very hollow and limp. There and then i realised how important bass is and decided to go and buy one and learn how to play it. I've never wanted to play anything else since. Greg
11.
But those same guys go through so much gear that you'd have to say they can't be happy otherwise they would stick...so why would you put much stock in that process..??
I'm hearin' ya there! Fair call.
Bass amps have too much EQ..... IMO
Now that's a point I have to disagree with you on, sorry. I'm always tweaking the EQ to suit the room, the way the band's sounding, etc. I'd be lost without sweepable mids! To each his own as they say! Greg
12. .
For about 10 years I used a Peavey MkIII and a Laney 4x10 and was happy. Then I found BassChat...
Man, I'm SO with you on that! It was these buggers ( ie talkbass guys) talking about their heads and cabinets and stuff that made me begin to release the moths from my wallet. They're still flying out! I almost have my perfect rig assembled. Just waiting on the GB Shuttlemax 12.0 and Eminence Kappalite 3015LF to arrive. Greg
13. . You need to be careful that the cloth doesn't flap on the grill. I made a set of home hi-fi speakers one time and put cloth over the grill. At volume it would sound like a long, loud, fart over the top of the music...... seriously! Greg
14. Yeah man, let's have a look!! Greg
Hats off to my very very clever guitarist (well really I'm his bass player rather than he being my guitarist)... I had left over from an old project a small front baffle cut for a 12" speaker and dual-ported... after a deal involve exchange of parts for labour the aforementioned guitarist agreed to knock up a cab around the baffle board which I could then finish to suit. I was expecting a basic box which I would cover with the usual carpet fabric. Well I got it at rehearsal tonight and the workmanship is so good I am going to leave it uncovered! I'll probably stain or varnish for durability but definitely no carpet. Beech ply, solid construction, perfectly made, just needs a back and the cabinet hardware plus the recently acquired 12" neo speaker from Mykesbass and my 300w 1x12 practice/small gig cab will be ready Will post some pics if anyone's interested. ficelles
15. .
And old acoustical engineers. From your response I gather you're neither.
LOL! Bill, from what I've seen/read on these forums you tell it like it is. I like your style! I'm a bit the same at times! (BTW, you put me in my place one time a few years back too!) Greg
16. . Thanks for the fast response to my email Alex!!! Greg
17. . Alex, Please check your Inbox. I have sent you a PM in regard to pricing of your cabs. I want to buy one! Greg
18. . alexclaber, Please check your PM box. Cheers, Greg
19. . Guys, I'm not real handy with speaker box design software, I'm very much a beginner. I have just used WinISD to calculate the design of a new 15" bass cabinet I want to build using an old Etone 461 bass speaker I have lying around here. The speaker's parameters are, according to Etone: Fs : 35Hz Vas: 253 Qms: 6.1 Qes: 0.34 Qts: 0.322 PMax: 250 W (RMS) I came up with a 108 litre box with a 100mm diameter vent 44mm long. The box is tuned to 43.15 Hz. Before I go and manufacture the cab, could someone (who is more experienced than me at this!) please check my box size for me? The last thing I want to do is go to all that trouble and find that I've f....d it up! LOL! Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Greg
20. . Thanks for all the input guys! (What a fantastic forum!!!!) Looks like most of my tax return cheque in a few months will be spent on a Genz Benz head! Thanks to all once again, Greg
21. . Guys, I am currently looking to buy a Genz Benz STL MAX 12.0. I've never owned a Genz Benz product before. Have there been any problems with these amps? If I do it I will probably be buying it online, with no warranty. (GB USA won't warrant an amp bought from outside the USA/Canada.) Any input greatly appreciated. Greg (Australia)
22.
Hen's teeth. To get an authentic-looking footswitch, I obtained schematics from the net, bought a cheap peavey footswitch of the same era (2+ switches), and had it lightly modded to fit the schematics. If you don't care about authentic, just get schematics and build your own!
. A pointless gloat: I've got an original MkIII footswitch here. I reckon it would be the same as the MkIIII unit. It came with the head I bought 20 years ago. (No, sorry, not for sale.) Greg
23. attachment=78835:3_x_twin..._box_rig.jpg]
I've got a barefaced vintage 2 x 15, it is a very sensitive cab (would handle the 1000w version too), about equivalent to 2 of the compact 1 x 15s that they make. I have played it through a few other cabs though and it has been impressivley loud through pretty much everything. What are you thinking of putting it through?
I have a trio of 2x10s (130 watts each driver) that I'm not entirely happy with yet. I'm trying to sort out their lack of volume. If I can nail that then I'll use them. [
24.
........ but ultimately it comes down to the consumer having to determine driver suitability, rather than blindly trust the manufacturer.
That's exactly what I did in my ignorance Bill! Doh! Thank you all for not flaming me!! (I pride myself on being fairly intelligent in general, but this speaker/box technology mystifies me.) Strangely, these speakers from this Australian company (Etone, not Eton BTW) are highly respected from my observations over the past 20 years or more. They have been around for absolutely yonks over here. So, are Eminence Kappalites the popular choice still? I remember they were apparently the "gun" 15s a while back. What about their 10s? I think I need to bite-the-bullet and buy some proper bass 10s! Greg
25. Thanks for the feedback/input guys, I have taken it all on board.
Got the 500w, yet to find a practical use for anything past half volume, 1000w is a waste of money unless you want to play a massive venue with no PA support (which you wouldn't want to unless you are clinically insane and/or deaf). Changing the preamp tubes for something with a bit less gain transforms this amp, no mud whatsoever. 500w for the win!
garethfriend, Interesting. What cabinet/s do you run with the 500? Greg
