I've had tinnitus for a while now. In fact, I've probably had it far longer than I realise, because I didn't get it from music ...

It was only getting back into music that led to me realising how much damage I'd done.

On a side note, I have a full medical every year, including a proper hearing test. My hearing is near perfect, the only issue being a dip in the right ear's sensitivity at one frequency,

So tinnitus doesn't necessarily degrade your hearing, it can just irritate the hell out of you instead.

This .... but left ear.
and mine was caused by a drummer bashing a ride cymbal during set up about 2cm. from my ear whilst i was plugging in my amp.
The constant hissing can drive me nuttier at times.
BTW, the drummer went home that night with a very large bruise on his upper arm - funny that he hasn't done it again. <_<

Interesting - he's got straight hair and curly lead and I've got curly hair and straight lead but my Da was born not many miles from Paisley.........................

3. Local pub gig with a '60s band.
Played a few Rolling Stones numbers and this couple, well into their seventies, were dancin' like Jagger.
At the end of the evening one of the other punters remarked on the old boys fitness and stamina.
His missus replied " You should have seen him in the old days when he was taking purple hearts!".
Question from my son who was roadie for the night "What are purple hearts, Dad?"
Time for bed....................

If you don't send it back the irritation will fester until you can't stand it any more, at which point you'll sell it on.... for a big loss.

Best thing is to send it back now.
Absolutely true.
Send it back and try before you buy the next one.

Possibly part of how he adapted originally from being left-handed but playing a rightie & it's stuck?
OK, I know this is not bass playing, but Hendrix was a leftie (played left handed) and a load of the stuff he played couldn't be done without using his thumb over the top.
Try playing some of Robert Johnsons licks, even in G or D tuning, without using your thumb on your left hand.
Personally, I don't really care what's right or wrong as long as it grooves, sounds good and fits the song (sez me who would definitely fail Grade 1 if I was examined.)

It's that "Region #1" thingy ... can I play that using the DVD drive on a PC?
Don't normally have problems with playing "Region#1" jobbies on my 2002 Dell PC running XP but best read your destructions first.

The Stax/Volt Tour of Norway 1967 is amazing. It's a six-parter, I think... all on YouTube. :D
I could watch it over and over... in fact, I do.

Thanks all for your concerns about how I run my dept.

I will look at the Peavey, Vox and Fender options suggested.

Owen, if my posts have upset you then I'm truly sorry and I'm not saying that my thinking is correct, but I feel very strongly about the lack of guidance and discipline which seems to be the way of the world today.

But you've still got the other half of the students who were breaking everything, and you only need one person who doesn't/won't learn and the whole thing is ruined for everyone.

Deposit systems require monitoring to be enforceable, which then takes time away from other things, like teaching... I'm with the Peavey Bandit option.
OK, so how much time is being wasted at the moment trying to sort and repair broken kit?
The root cause of the problem is the "BAD" students not the amps, leads, etc.etc.
Eliminate the the root cause and the problem is solved.
Therefore, train the students (by teaching and/or offering the deposit incentive), monitor performance and get rid of the non conforming elements.
IMO this would be a damn sight cheaper and time effective in the medium term than continuously replacing kit however sturdy it is, and turning a blind eye to the small fraction of "students" who spoil it for everybody else.
If these so called prospective musos behaved like this in a working environment they wouldn't last 4 nanoseconds.
Make 'em aware of the problem which is impacting on everyone else and make them responsible and accountable for their own behaviour and actions.
If necessary cancel lessons for the whole class occassionally and let the good'ns sort out the bad'ns themselves.
It certainly worked at the schools I went to. (They weren't approved schools, either........)
