Nice choice of words, and exactly why my go-to bass is still a 4 string, an old friend.

Were I to stick the 4 string in the attic (John Entwistle's uncle's attic, that is) and practise the 5 string I'm sure I'd find the new home just as cosy as the old one, though.

Thanks Bremen. I did hide my 4 away, practised and rehearsed the 5 string for two weeks before taking it out in anger.
Arrived at the first gig with it (stupidly left the 4 at home) only to find that the gig was being recorded live for BBC Radio.
My so-called mates in the band thought it to be a jolly jape not to warn me in advance -bustuds!
Don't ask how but, after donning brown trousers and taking a Jim Beam and Coke, I played the gig and it went really well with no cock-ups.
I then felt super cocky and continued to use it for over a year without reverting to the 4 but I just didn't relax enough and feel comfortable at gigs when the pressure was on.
Turned up at a birthday party and was asked to jam using the bassists Fender P - it was like putting on an old shoe - comfort and confidence returned in spades so I decide to go back to what I knew best..... 4 strings.

Doesn't wax get all gooey and melt? Genuine question. I don't know
Not sure, is my honest answer, but FWIW:
I don't think this one does coz Mrs.J tells me she's used it on our open fire surround for years and having just checked it I see no problem.
Maybe Briwax is based on high molecular weight waxes ( I know it's dipersed in toluene and white spirit from the destructions on the tin) so I guess it's unlikely to "melt / go gooey" at normal UK temps. ?

3. Sososososo here we go.
Sunday morning and Mrs. Jazzneck asks me to polish the coffe table.
After enquiring, I was told to use the Briwax and her best duster.
The table came up a treat, all semi matt and slippery and clean.
Aha, thinks oi, must try this on a bass!
Tried it on the rosewood fingerboard of my Bitsa P and, lo and behold, it has a wonderful finish and plays fantastically well - best it has ever done.
Having suffered the bollocking for playing with my bass again instead of doing some housework, I'll be doing the rest of them bass necks later.
I now thoroughly recommend Briwax for fingerboards.
Off to the pub to celebrate before the roast is ready.

4. Commissioned and bought a Warwick Custom Dolphin SN 5 a few years ago.
I used it gigging/recording for about a year and struggled with it.
A fantastic bass which sounded and played superbly BUT in times of stress and terror I couldn't find "home" which, to me, is bottom E.
Therefore, a really good bass had to go and I've reverted to using olden day 4 stringers with which I'm much more comfortable and confident.
(Do miss that bottom B note when playing Red House, though - I'll get my Afghan coat and leave for Katmandu, shall I....?)

It's in my upcoming book, 'Easy Fart Bass for Old Slappers' (Omnibus Press, £9.99).
Surely it should be titled "Old Fart Bass for Easy Slappers"?
If you did that you could probably increase the price onehundredfold so's I could then buy it at Amazons knock down Kindle price of £0.99. ;)

6. Nah, live about an hour away on t'coast, but I used to rehearse quite a bit in a Nissen hut on the corner of Ridgewell airfield (Tilbury Juxta Clare) and my parents are in Ashen churchyard.

There was something decent on at the Haverhill arts centre? Blue moons really do exist
Yup, at last a blue moon shone.
And, just for interest, Brian Hodgsons rig looked a little like your avatar. :)

8. Went to see Albert Lee with Hogan's Heroes at the Haverhill Arts Centre last night.

The band, as usual were great - good sound, excellent musicianship but most of all Brian Hodgson and Peter Baron gave a masterclass in how to be a perfect rhythm section.
Simple, understated, on the button, bass and drums playing for the song and allowing the rest of the band the freedom and space to sing and perform.
Tight as a duck's chuff - some of the more complex players in the world could do worse than going to see them to understand that bass life does not have to be compicated.
A thoroughly enjoyable night out - catch 'em if you can.

Who's this guy?
Check his list of other bits and pieces and their prices - what's he smoking?
Can I have some to smoke too, probably cheaper than rose tinted specs.

Hello, thanks for your help :)

Potential stupid question alert - what do you mean by "still give you an amp sound"? What does a "non-amp sound" sound like?
Poo! (in my Humblest opinion). :sorry:

Get the BDI-21 as it is a great little box.
I use both this and my old SansAmp BD.

That SG is great,
it appears thge painted player chaps are quite talented
Very talented and very helpful, too.
Nothing was a problem - they sourced and fitted the vibrola, sanded the back of the neck a la Clapton but would'nt paint the pick-up surrounds just in case the paint was not compatible with the plastic (a wise move IMO).
This guitar plays and sounds as well as it looks, too.
Now looking for the correct Ace strap to finish off the job. Any ideas anyone?

12. Half hour set with our local singer/songwriter in the middle of the village barn dance down the farm on Sunday evening.
Had to learn eight originals (that have never been heard by others yet) in the last week - been a lot of fun as there is definitely a Jeff Lynne / George Harrison thing going on musically.
The farm's at the end of our lane so I'll also be able to have drink or four, too. :D

13. Playing this type of stuff (sort of) in a three piece band at the moment.
Front man is great - Vocals, CBG, Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Fiddle, Slide....
Drummer/Percussionist uses a GigPig and a super assortment of banging shaking things.
Tremendous fun, never play the same song twice the same way and the punters seem to love it wherever we play.
And, best of all, no egos in the band whatsoever.
Will let you know when recording is available.
