1. Currently use a gig bag but I would much prefer a hard case or one of them polyfoam jobbies for my Ampeg AEB.

The problem is that the bass is 1240mm long and the body is 385mm across the lower bout AND 95mm deep at that beautiful scroll headstock with backwards facing tuners. :)

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a case to fit this beggar without having to go to the expense of having a custom flight case made for it, please?

  2. See my name?

The reason I used it is that I've just built my relic P-bodied, Jazz-necked bass using all of the hardware, electrics etc. from my very old P-bass which fell apart.

Why did I do it? - I was able to get the bass I wanted. :)

Have you considered getting a P-bass and fitting a Jazz neck to taste - be a little careful if you do go this route as you must ensure that the heel dimensions of the neck and the pocket dimensions of the body match perfectly.

Just a suggestion, but some of the guys on here will have better/simpler solutions.

  3. SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the way to do it! :)

Does anyone know if this is part of a released film or DVD?

If so, do you know if it is available anywhere?

Thanks in anticipation - and a massive thank you for putting me onto this one.

  4.
Yeh, well, it's a bloody cheat innit?

You go along to hear some 12-bar blues played, and along comes a joker who only wants to play eight of 'em ...
That's my problem - I haven't got past eight yet, but I'm working on it. :)

    - that's why I go to jams cos you always learn something new and useful that you can probably use for your own gig whether its a lick, how to get sounds, gear and just the general advice and craik that you get from musos in a live playing environment!

  5.
Stormy Bloody Monday!! :)
Suggested "Key To The Highway" the other night - had to show the house band the song.

Later in the evening Mustang Sally and Red House were slaughtered, yet again.

Thats when it's time for a smoke!

  6.
The house band gets a gig on a quiet night.
The pub gets punters buying beer on a quiet night.
The punters get to see their mates play.
The musicians get to meet other musicians and network.

Usually there are no negatives, other than a long, boring slow blues, hence the Red House comment!! A slow blues is the jam night equivalent of Stairway to Heaven or Smoke On The Water on Saturday morning in a music shop!
- the house band gets paid for the gig?

  7.
Just don't play Red House. OK?
Quote heard from a female non-player at a local jam night - "Don't they play any modern stuff or recent hits? We came here to be entertained!"

Thus, thought for the day -

"I am playing for free so that the pub can attract spending punters on a quiet night or am I here to make some friends, learn more and have some fun whilst the pub makes some money?"

    Over to you................................. :)

  8.
Well I'm afraid you get a slap on the wrists for it not being in my pre EB porn thread! Let's see more :)
Ouch! :) - Will post tomorrow when the light improves!

  9.
Before you double bluff me that could be a genuine neck with a very well fitted board.
Hi Pete - Truss Rod replying (can I change my name from jazzneck now?). :)

No, not a double bluff - it is real and it is sitting beside me as I type.

The body and all hardware including electrics are all original 2nd April 1980.

The neck is a genuine MM dated 6th April 1982. Is it a replacement or did someone screw up with the date stamp at the factory?

If anyone out there knows any more about this one's history I would love to know.

  10. Hi Graham - have done a few of these and you seem to have most of the bases (no pun intended) covered.

POWER - we used to run a minimum of two UNWOUND extension leads from the house to the "stage" and make sure that you have fully operational circuit breakers connected at the house end!
Ensure that all connections are "off the floor" and covered.

FLOORING, for the poor drummer - Large sheet of chipboard worked well for us after he put his carpet on top.
For the rest of you real musicians - take a rug each.

SOUND - don't worry too much -set it as you would for a smallish pub and you should be OK - your harp player will be a bit happier as, for some reason, there seemed to be less propensity for feedback.

VOLUME - just be sensible, some git is bound to ask you to turn it down.

Basically, apply common sense, don't prewarn the authorities - AND HAVE A GOOD TIME!!!! :)

  11.
+1 way too many players constantly 'listen' to themselves instead of 'playing'
+1 to that too.

In addition, can anyone explain to me how you can control your own sound when you play a big stage/festival and the sound guys want you to DI straight into the mixing board?

I've played a fair few using SVT + 8x10 as a backline and the sound guys still wanted me to DI instead of miking the cab which was "my sound". The problem I "suffer" is that the modern sound guys want to make me sound as if I'm playing a clangy piano with plenty of click and string noise :) whereas I want pure Chess/Stax tuneful thump. :)

The only diplomatic way of winning I have found, so far, is to take my Sansamp Bass Driver which I set myself and insist on the sound man as using this as my DI source. A few pints to the crew also helps tremendously!

The big problem is that you can't play and hear yourself in the middle of the auditorium simultaneously so you have to trust people - good job the harp player and our full time sound man knew what was wanted and could gently guide the house crew to what was needed for the me and the band rather than letting 'em run riot with modern technology.

The studio is a different issue - I use my own rig miked with a bit of compression and threaten any engineer/producer (politely) with a painful death if he touches anything except his mixer. :D

  12. 1967 - I was unknowingly given a drink seriously spiked with speed and then played the gig!

Result - bust the G string halfway through the first number and played at such a rate of knots that we finished the planned set in 80% of normal time, the drummer was knackered and the singer/guitarist reckoned I'd played his lead breaks better than him! :)

A strange experience which I did not want to repeat after staying awake for 36 hours and then suffering a week of feeling absolute carbon bibackside.

For me the answer is simple - do what you want as long as it does not affect, pee off, hurt or offend any other soul, but if you're lucky enough to give other people pleasure at the same time then you must be very special to start with. :)

Just the pontification and opinion of another Grumpy Old Git.

  13.
Hello to all of you from yet another oldie!

Same old story - played bass from 1964 till early 1970 then stopped to get married, have family, pay mortgage etc. restarted in 1996 and now I thoroughly enjoy playing again (particularly as I have retired from the day job).

    I'm lucky enough to have:
1978 Stingray - Natural with fretted R/W board.
1967 Fender Mustang - white refin.
My own bitsa - Jazz necked Precision body with my old mid '60s hardware and pickup!
    Ampeg V4BH with 4x10 HLF
    Ampeg BA115 HPT
    Sansamp Bass Driver.
(and a full head of hair even if it is starting to thin out a bit and going grey - no teeth though!)

If anybody has or knows someone who has an AMPEG AEB1 Fretted Bass with the "secret pickup" for sale, please let me know!
Now even luckier to have a 1967 AMPEG AEB1 :)

Hi from further down the Essex coast.

The big question - which side of the railway line are you in Frinton? :)
    [/quo

Southside, but not in the town! :)

Just checked your band website - beware - I may turn up at a gig.

  15. Hi - welcome from another newbie.
FWIW - Can I suggest a second hand Ampeg 4x10 HLE and continue to use your head? The best cab I've come across for all types of gigs - check out e-bay uk, there are usually ex demo cabs on sale which are well within your budget.

  16.
Welcome :)
Whereabouts are you from?, I'm originally from Brightlingsea :)

You own my dream Stingray, boo to you

    Enjoy the site

Er - this is Strange....... Thanks for the warm welcome ----- I'm originally from High Wycombe, now living outside Frinton and have played a few gigs in Brightlingsea!
Would you believe I was rehearsing in Arlesford on Saturday, too?
